did inuyasha ever get decent again? I thought the first 40-50 episodes or so were ok and then it got really monotonous and I stopped watching

No it never got better. The anime ended with no conclusion because the manga was still going. And that went on for a million more chapters until they finally killed Naraku and then sex was had and the end.
