Quarians the best

Although from what I know about yoblazer, I half expect asari to be #1 on this list.

Some of the quarian Admirals can be so bullheaded and irritating, especially in ME3, but the quarians as a whole are fascinating to me.

10. Quarians
Notable members: Tali'Zorah vas Normandy, the Admiralty Board
external image

Oh lord, these folks. Of the eight-or-so "main" races in the ME universe, the quarians are by far my least favorite. The only reason they made it this high is because the electrifying Tali and Kal'Reegar ****ing brought it, but two standouts does not a respectable race make. Introduced as a race forced to flee their own homeworld and adapt to life aboard a sterile flotilla, quarians were the very definition of “sympathetic.” They were nomadic gypsies, with no sunrise to call their own and a galaxy which largely despised and distrusted them for unleashing the plague known as the geth. Top it off with an immune system weakened to the point that all quarians now needed to don face-concealing protective suits, and perhaps no other race inspired as much compassion from players.

What a difference two more games make. As we began to unravel more of the quarians’ history and meet more along our adventure, I began to view them with less empathy and more displeasure (probably akin to the way the other races viewed them). This was in no small part due to the hapless, impotent group of dummies known as the Quarian Admiralty Board. I say this without hesitation: quarian leadership is the WORST in galactic space, and the ME universe is not wanting for competition in that category. The quarian elite spent two games bickering amongst each other and making one stupid decision after another. They nearly exiled their single greatest, most capable representative (it would not be a stretch to call Tali her own people’s Shepard) and then chose a ****ing REAPER WAR as their preferred time to pick a fight with the geth.

Of course, speaking of their synthetic nemeses, learning the truth about the Quarian/Geth War – how it was brought about and who was the aggressor – was a bitter pill to swallow and did not do Tali’s brethren any favors. There are a couple notable examples of a race becoming more exemplary and amiable as Shepard’s story progresses. The quarians fall victim to the opposite exposition. They are great in ME1 when all we see and hear is the greatest of their species, and then disappointingly fall from grace as we learn more about what that species is really like.

I wonder what you are counting as the eight "main" races.

Human
Asari
Salarian
Turian
Quarian
Krogan

...Drell, I guess? Even though we've only seen like three of them.

What else? Oh... I guess geth.

I'm not sure what to think of the Quarians. What you say is correct though. Tali is fantastic, but the last 2 games really haven't done the race any favors.

Mass Effect 3 story time:

After I learned the truth about the Quarian/Geth war, I actually decided to support the Geth during the conflict (couldn't stop the conflict due to prior decisions). Then Tali commited suicide and I just sat there, wondering how I could make such a decision. I was really torn between Tali being the second best thing in the Universe, and the other Quarians being real jerks who deserved what they got.

I wonder what you are counting as the eight "main" races.

Human
Asari
Salarian
Turian
Quarian
Krogan

...Drell, I guess? Even though we've only seen like three of them.

I would consider the Reapers a "main" race over the Drell.

9. Drell
Notable members: Thane Krios
external image

In my last write-up, I mentioned how one incredible standout (Tali) cannot lift an otherwise hapless people from the depth of mediocrity. The drell, who are represented wholly by the assassin Thane Krios, went through the whole series managing to avoid this rather embarrassing setback.

Apart from his son Kolyat (who is surprisingly likable for an angsty teen), Thane is the sole voice for his people. No other drell are interacted with or seen even in flashbacks. Thus, the way players perceived the entire drell race was based on Thane’s conveyance of it, and luckily for us, Thanke is a BAMF and Mass Effect fans were all too willing to project his personality and characteristics onto his unseen brethren.

Thane falls under the archetype of the “stoic assassin.” Far less a violent person (he’s no krogan) than he is a machine of precision, he is deeply introspective and spiritual. Unlike the ridiculous ramblings of the hanar (who we surprisingly learn have a symbiotic relationship with drell), Thane expresses his own religious beliefs very somberly, and I believe the calm passion with which he speaks about his spirituality, his own life, and his people’s history endeared him to many a player. A husband to a murdered wife, father to an abandoned son, and sufferer of a disease that’s slowly killing him, Thane is a tragic character, but his professionalism and icy demeanor meant his emotions were always in check. Despite facing initial mistrust from some crewmates (cough JACOB cough), the assassin proved to care for his Normandy squad mates, Shepard in particular. Like all of his dialogue options and cutscenes, his romance with FemShep is devoid of the comedy so often seen in Mass Effect, but any comedy would have just diluted this character’s awesomeness.

Thane entered the ME universe a badass and left it a hero, sacrificing himself to save the salarian council member. He alone carries the drell to this respectable placing, but more exposure could have taken them further. It may be shameless fanservice, but my god, imagine a small team of drell assassins massacring an entire Cerberus or reaper unit in a cutscene. Could have bumped them up another spot or two.

Yeah, I think they're salarians. The STG team on Virmire wears similar armor.

Great list so far. I've got a soft spot for the volus myself, mostly due to Niftu Cal and Doran.

I'd have either the turians or the geth at #1.

8. Reapers
Notable members: Sovereign, Harbinger
external image

An ancient machine race comprised of enormous dreadnaughts, the Reapers (I do believe the word “Reaper” is capitalized throughout the series, so if you have complaints, SHADOWHALO, TAKE THEM UP WITH BIOWARE) are the primary antagonists of the Mass Effect universe. Apart from their hyper-advanced technology and frightening power, almost nothing is revealed regarding their origins, history, or motivations before ME3’s infamous ending.

The Reapers are considered a myth by most, and so the saga experienced a jolting start when Shep and her team witnessed Saren, a famed Spectre gone rogue, fly off on what appeared to be a massive Reaper ship two kilometers in length. It is only much later in the game that we learn this ship is Sovereign, an actual Reaper. This revelation ranks among my favorite plot moments in video game history, one that has lost little of its power over the years. Realizing the truth about the Reapers and the chilling extent of their might made you feel so very small, so very weak, and so very helpless.

Reapers are “each a nation, independent, free of all weakness.” It took an entire galactic fleet to take down Sovereign, ONE member of a species that would soon number in the thousands. Whether you hated Bioware’s resolution or not (lol), merely pondering how we would defeat these colossal machines – ones whose very existence was said to be beyond our comprehension – made for fun times. And yet, their greatest credit is not in their infinite age, their infinite comprehension, or the infinite reach of their genocidal demands… but in their trolling. Reapers are THE ULTIMATE TROLLS. Sovereign talked soooooo much crap in ME1, and freakin’ Harbinger upped the ante in ME2. All things considered, it was something that shouldn’t have made sense, but their snarky sinister trolling worked so, so well.

Unfortunately, the Reapers’ increased numbers and lack of trolling diluted their potency in ME3 (and let’s get real, that ending did them no favors), but it was nowhere near enough to smear everything their ominous presence contributed to the series. Truly outstanding antagonists.

The Reapers were still pretty awesome in ME3. They just played a different role because of the invasion. A lot of ME3's best moments are Reaper-related.
