Aren't you glad there's at least one fan here with the creativity to rank something OTHER than Shepard's eclectic squad members? Yeah, I am too! This is one of two post-ME3 topics I had in mind, and as the more condensed and lazier effort, it should be knocked out of the way in short order.

Now, the Mass Effect universe is vast indeed, and it would make no sense to rank every race that gets so much as a passing mention, so this topic will focus only on sapient races that physically appear in at least one of the three games. That means no thresher maws and no extinct species that Javik mentions (sorry to the Thresher Maw Nation, woot woot).

Also for me I'd say turian, quarian, asari, salarian, krogan, and drell are all highly ranked. Volus is low.

Protheans should have a bit of an advantage, as they only have one major representative but he's awesome, whereas other species have multiple representatives that are very good or very awful.

20. The Thorian
Notable members: Ugh... The Thorian


The Thorian was a vile ancient creature dwelling underground beneath the Zhu's Hope colony on the planet Feros. It bore animal and plant characteristics and possessed the ability to indoctrinate the poor Zhu's Hope colonists. A being of immense age, The Thorian was possibly the only living thing in the galaxy to live through the age of the Protheans and the last Reaper Invasion. As such, invaluable data was stored in its memory banks. This memory was retrieved by Commander Shepard and used to track down Saren and delay the imminent Reaper invasion. The Thorian was a crappy thing and it is unknown if others of its kind existed. As such, it may not even qualify as a species or race, but it is included here because I like round numbers and if you think I'm ever doing a list with 19 entrants then GO TA HALE.

19. Keepers
Notable members: That Keeper that one Salarian dude was scanning in ME1, the Keeper on the nightmarish Citadel at the end of ME3


Hey, it's everyone's favorite bug-eyed little worker bees! Keepers are the enigmatic, docile, harmless insectoid race that keep the Citadel up and running. So synonymous are they with day-to-day life on the Citadel that they are scantly noticed by most of the station's denizens. Personally, I've always found the little buggers kinda cute and always get a kick when they stare at you for a second before resuming whatever work it is they're doing (as captured in that pic above). Of course, they serve as a crucial plot point near the end of ME1, but in and of themselves, the Keepers don't warrant a high spot on the list. They don't talk to you, they don't interact with you, there are no funny/badass/douchebag keeper reps as there are for many other races, and the only sidequest that involves them is one of the most monotonous in the series.


And heeeeey, I just realized something. You know what I did JUST IN THAT PARAGRAPH UP THERE??

I alternated between caps and noncaps for the species name!

18. Collectors
Notable members: Anyone that HarbingASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL


I guess there's already been some debate about this one. For my money, I think there has been enough genetic modification to consider the collectors a separate race from the protheans. And hey, I bet Javik would agree with me so nyah.

Yes indeed, the collectors in their current form were once the protheans, now turned into soulless husks that carry out the reapers' bidding. They are introduced near the beginning of Mass Effect 2 as a mysterious, rarely seen race that has been kidnapping human colonies for unknown reasons. They are fearsome fighters and are among the most tenacious opponents Shepard had ever come across. They are directed (PERSONALLY) by Harbinger but maintain their own impressive tactics in battle. Unlike other "evil" races, the collectors are not once portrayed in a sympathetic light. As far as we know, they were created by the reapers, controlled by the reapers, and are far more restricted in their free will than even the Geth. They are tools that serve an ominous creator. Tools that need killing. That is their singular purpose, and despite their challenging fights, that's why they still suck.

Mordin's talks about the Collectors in ME2 were pretty great, especially the stuff about how they have no culture of their own.

Nah, the Collectors are important and distinct enough to be counted as their own race. They're not the same as other kinds of husks anyway.

The reapers clearly took more time and care when creating them. Also, some might not be sapient. Husks sure aren't.

17. Batarians
Notable members: Balak, the bartender that poisoned Shepard on Omega


Here they are, the UGLIEST mother ****ers in the known galaxy. Get a load of that mug. I actually appreciate the batarians not for anything the race accomplished during the series, but because they are one of ME's races that best represent the stereotypes we humans project on each other. Bioware clearly meant for them to be a reviled species, hated by anyone who played the games. How did they accomplish this? By making them ugly as sin. Notice how even particularly jarring creatures like the krogan, drell, and turians have a sort of odd alien charm. Not so with the batarians. They were primarily portrayed as ruthless terrorists for two games, and hideous faces (with voices to match) make it much more difficult to sympathize with them. Did anyone really give a damn when 300,000 of em were wiped out by Shepard's mass relay super-splosion? Thought not!

15. Yahg
Notable members: The Shadow Broker


The yahg are a pre-spaceflight species who essentially relinquished all rights to join the galactic community when they massacred a team of scientists who had landed on their world. They are terrifying creatures, possessing size and aggression that puts even the krogan to shame. Their looks are deceiving, however, as they are formidably intelligent and exceptionally quick learners. This is evidenced by the only significant yahg in the ME trilogy, the Shadow Broker. The Shadow Broker was a shadowy figure (hence the name DUH) during the first two games, commanding an untraceable army of agents and contacts across the galaxy. No one had seen his face. No one knew who he was or if he even actually existed. The original ME did a pretty damn good job of building up the character, so when it came time for Shep and Liara T'Soni to find and confront him in ME2, I immediately tempered my expectations, as seeing some ordinary human or salarian sitting there running everything would have been a disappoint. Instead, I got a 12-foot fleshy tank with a face that looks like a Silent Hill vag or something. The build up and payoff to Lair of the Shadow Broker (which still might be the series' best mission) is absolutely enough to leapfrog the yahg ahead of five other species.
