I was pleasantly surprised that even the trailer held back on what the movie is actually about.

Masterful? Yeah no

I will admit I did see the matinee just on the absurdity of the premise. Pretty good comedy, but I probably would have liked it better if I went in unspoiled. The problem with that though is that I wouldn't ever drop coin on a horror movie without something to draw me in.

That's pretty weird. For one thing, while I personally do like excessive nudity and violence, more often than not Rated R movies don't have those. With the crazy MPAA rating system, anybody who doesn't play ball is an R. If you have too many swears, even just a few f***s it's an R.

Plenty of movies that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards have been Rated R, even going back 40+ years. Plenty of completely classy movies are Rated R.

As for the "pandering" thing, oh boy I guess this is some more ingrained shame and guilt over the human body and sexuality, but there's nothing wrong with including that in art. Just ask European filmmakers from way back.

As for not wanting violence in film, well it is surprising to hear that from who I would assume is a video game fan, but yeah it doesn't take all that much for an R rating. Not every Rated R movie is torture porn or something. Hardly any are. Plus the most crazy movies are unrated and foreign.

But yeah, wow, ratings. The R rating is practically the default rating for films aimed at adult audiences. It covers such a humongous range of things.

Unfortunately I find that true. R ratings are the default for adult audiences very often.

The thing is though, movies don't Need many of these things.

very very rarely have I watched something that contained something that would only be rated R and found it to be beneficial to my life. The particular example I am thinking of is the Child Molestation scene in Elfen Leid which I found fundamentally affected the way I viewed child exploitation. It was never very real before then. Your obvious question here is why I was watching Elfein Leid in the first place, which the answer to that is that It was the favorite anime of my best friend and I watched it at her insistence.

For my philosophy class I watched the Phonebooth, which was an excellent movie, but I could never buy it because there simply was too much profanity. It is simply not necessary to have more then 3-4 F words in a movie max. Any more then that and you seriously devalue the impact of the word. I believe the Phonebooth had around 40 or so. All this does it make me feel uncomfortable especially if there are other people around. I don't want to use profane language, and listening to it does nothing but makes it more likely I would speak it.

The only possible exception to profanity in movies may be if you were trying to reenact urban new york or something to that effect, but that is certainly the exception and not the rule.

You realize many people use profanity when among friends, it's pretty casual. It's how people talk. And it's not like they're saying f*** for some kind of shock value, so there's nothing to "devalue". Not just New Yorkers talk like that.

Anyways, the Coen Brothers.

But it's not. It's one thing to not like it personally, but where's your argument for it being unnecessary?

People talk that way. Movies aim to capture how people talk in real life. Thus, plenty of filmmakers have their characters talk that way to reflect that. It's necessary to their artistic vision. What is it about these words that bothers you? They're no different from any other words.

I do like arguing about my liberal ideals and freedoms and all that, but is this really the first time you've heard this argument? I mean, should I just link to a George Carlin special?

There's an excellent episode of Penn & Teller: Bull**** called "Profanity" which really covers all these bases. You can get it somewhere, I know its on Amazon downloads for a dollar or something.

As for why you can't say it on TV or Gamefaqs, one word answer: censorship. And I already mentioned converation between adults, we understand that kids don't use them, or grade school kids actually do but just not in front of adults. Because of oldschool pointless taboo.

But you still haven't answered mine. What is it about these words that bothers you, such that you don't want to hear them? Is the reason you don't want to hear them simply because your parents told you so, or that you can't say them on TV?

Perhaps I feel that profanity shouldn't be devalued from what it was originally intended to be. I think that Ironically you are arguing for profanity to lose the meaning that it has. I think that profanity is intended to be words that have extra kick to them. To be used in certain situations to emphasize a point more then a less sharp word.

So you are absolutely correct that if the whole world decided today that profanity is no longer vulgar and is just the same as normal speech then there would be no issues with it. But it's not. I feel that people still should only use profanity in situations where they are intending their speech to be emphasized, hence why I said that I think a Breaking Bad level of profanity for example, (about 1 F word an episode) is acceptable but more then that is not.

I think that.....most people agree with this. That profanity is intended to be different from other words. Until everyone agrees that is not the case profanity will still be viewed as vulgar.

I hope that you understand what I am saying

I get what you're saying, I just don't think what you're saying is true. For one thing you keep bringing up dramatic effect, Breaking Bad for example, when we're talking about reality at this point. If you think f**** needs to be reserved for occasions where people can be like "wow that guy is mad"... uh. Well, that's not a situation that most people should really find themselves in too often. The kind of effect you're talking about has nothing to do with casual conversation.

And again, I'm not ignorant to the fact that there are puritanical values and censorship and all that jazz, that's why I'm talking about the context of like-minded adults just talking normally. There's plenty of fun to be had there, a f*** ton of fun.

If regular people just doing their thing is vulgar, well lets keep things vulgar.

As for most people agreeing, I don't think so. Random tidbit from the excellent Penn & Teller episode I mentioned. For part they focus on some weirdo woman who hates swearing and has like a thing where she sells shirts and wants people to say you know made up babytalk instead. She puts up a sign for that in her friend's salon, and her friend says "oh s***, look at that". She's like "Why did you say that?!?".

Because her friend was saying, with one word, that anybody telling adults what words to say or not say, well it's silly s***.

I think you are basing conversation on conversations you personally witness.

Most conversations I have with people don't have nearly the amount of profanity that there is in many R rated movies, and I'm talking about conversations with people on gamefaqs as well as people I actually know.

The main point is though that people understand there are still plenty of people who are offended by coarse language, whether we feel they should be or not. Hence people refrain from using profanity in everyday situations with people they don't personally know which is specifically what gives profanity its edge.

it certainly is an interesting thing to think about

Sure, yes my friends use profanity, but I'm not just basing this on my life. I've mentioned a few other notable folks who also have explained that view, plus if you are on twitter or listen to podcasts, well you'd notice profanity is not so taboo for a pretty large portion of people.

It is indeed an interesting topic, but from my point of view it's pretty much just don't worry about how people talk.

So pretty much your main point for why you don't like it is because its "vulgar" and as mentioned a bunch you want it to retain its "edge"? My solution, become more vulgar and edgy and you won't mind the words anymore. =P
