nicolas jaar is like jamie woon stripped of everything interesting. wild flag are essentially sleater-kinney but more rock than riot grrrl, unfortunately. "romance" is still a killer tune.

it's easy to mistake risk for soul - jaar did a lot of unconventional things when it came to mixing his album but it's not pulled off particularly well. And he certainly never produced something as refined and haunting as "Night Air."

I think this might be the only place on the internet where you'll find two people in a row not calling the jaar album a crushing bore.

yeah, I'm not running out to listen to the new sigur ros. I never got around to go either because I have no faith in that band anymore. It happens, and it's not a big deal - plenty of other music to listen to!

i wouldn't argue that he did! i do think he made a considerably more cohesive and intriguing album though.

and if anything i'd say you're the one in danger of making that mistake; describing his music as risky and unconventional seems to contradict your earlier "stripped of anything interesting" descriptor. you can claim jaar failed with space is only noise if you like, but i reckon it's at least worthy of being deemed an interesting failure!

Not exactly. Releasing an album comprised of beats not often found in the context of music Jaar is familiar with (garage, techno) doesn't mean the work is engaging or succeeds in capturing interest. Failed experiments aren't always worthwhile!

R.I.P. is fantastic; more textured than his previous works and surprisingly devoid of percussion. This is probably something that more than Rusty and myself will enjoy. The run of Jardin/Serpent/Shadow of Tartarus is the best thing on here. If there's a flaw I can point out after one and a half listens is that I'm disappointed IWAAD made it onto here. I dug it more than some of the twitter tracks Actress released last year, but I don't know how I feel about it as a closing piece.

jerks were sold out of rubies but I managed to pick up the rerelease of You're a Woman and a cheap copy of Beach Boys Today, so not all was lost. It's no Big Star - Third though - 2011 was so much better

also listened to a few tracks from that alabama shakes album. Pretty good! Dunno why, but I thought it was the new Jack White band and I was avoiding it. Has anyone heard the album?

been kinda wishy washy, yeah. has its moments, but they really need to shake something up. they also need to follow the lead of Arrested Development / Community / Parks & Rec / etc and fill out the world around them. Let's see: I ranked All My Friends as the best song of the prior decade, Sound of Silver as a top 25 album ever, and This is Happening in the top 50...so yeah LCD Soundsystem is pretty good.

I've heard every LCD album, and while I've warmed up to them over the years, I still think the only worthwhile album they've put out is 45:33 or whatever the timestamp is. It's hard to hate too much on a middle aged man making electronic music he can dance too, but they have too many dumb songs like Daft Punk and Drunk Girls on their albums. I'm far too tempted to skip songs with them.

i don't think they're overrated in the least. i get why people love them so much - i just don't care for a significant portion of their output, especially their last album. they do pull off anthemic big indie better than a number of indie bands which exist solely to produce that music, though. in other, more (personally) exciting news...

As previously reported, Shackleton has a new release on the way, a box set featuring two separate long-form works, Music For The Quiet Hour and The Drawbar Organs EPs.

The box, due out imminently on the artist’s own Woe To The Septic Heart label, features incredible exterior and booklet illustrations by his longtime visual collaborator, Zeke Clough. Within it can be found a CD containing Music For The Quiet Hour, and three 12″ records comprising The Drawbar Organs EPs. The following statement from Shackleton explains the project’s origins and why it’s taken the form it has.

“For those who want to know the background, it is something like this. I bought an Italian drawbar organ module around two years ago. Apparently Italian organs from that period had a bad reputation but I was so happy with it that it appeared on most of the tracks I had been working on. I thought I had an album together and was supposed to get it mastered on the day after the mastering session for the Pinch and Shackleton release on Honest Jons (sometime towards the end of Summer 2011). I had also been working on a 12″ of more spacious music to go with that album as a limited vinyl 12″. By the time that I finished the music though, the tracks for that 12″ became so long for that I couldn’t contain them to two sides of a vinyl. This is what became [the] Music For The Quiet Hour album.

“In the end we didn’t get time to finish the mastering on that day in late Summer 2011 and for one reason or another the date got pushed back three months. Then there was the artwork. There was a lot to do and that took a long time to finish. On top of that I then moved house and studio. To cut a long story short, these things stacked up to a six months or so delay in the release. In the meantime I listened back to the whole 2 hours plus of music a few times and it struck me that Music For The Quiet Hour was an album (yes, a proper album) to be listened to all the way through, whilst the drawbar organ tracks were better suited to 12″ releases. Hence the format you have in front of you. A proposed 12″ that actually turned out to be an album and a proposed album that turned out to be a series of 12″s.

“In short, there is some new music from me. It’s generally bass heavy and percussive with an involved narrative. Some people will like it and some people won’t. I think that it is quite different to music I have released before, I suspect that other people won’t.

“Many thanks to musical contributors Andreas Gerth and Kingsuk Biswas. Many thanks as well to Zeke who has done wonderful artwork again and Vengeance Tenfold who has provided great vocals and also the superb letter that proved to be a big inspiration for both the artwork booklet and the music from Music For The Quiet Hour (Part 4 is based on a letter he wrote to his granddaughter who lives in the year 2065). Many thanks to all the people who have supported over the years. I hope that you enjoy the music and only ask that you do not put it on the internet.”
