R.I.P. is fantastic; more textured than his previous works and surprisingly devoid of percussion. This is probably something that more than Rusty and myself will enjoy. The run of Jardin/Serpent/Shadow of Tartarus is the best thing on here. If there's a flaw I can point out after one and a half listens is that I'm disappointed IWAAD made it onto here. I dug it more than some of the twitter tracks Actress released last year, but I don't know how I feel about it as a closing piece.

so on my six hour train journey yesterday, i was thinking (it happens!). we all do end-of-year lists, but besides the occasional all-time one i rarely stop to think about how recent albums actually compare to one another.

so, top ten albums of the last three years, guys? 2009-now, to simplify matters.

this is what i came up with:

1. Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit
2. maudlin of the Well - Part the Second
3. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
4. Rome - Die Aesthetik der Herrschaftsfreiheit
5. A Winged Victory for the Sullen - s/t
6. Deathspell Omega - Paracletus
7. Big K.R.I.T. - K.R.I.T. Wuz Here
8. Danny Brown - XXX
9. Rome - Flowers from Exile
10. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Honourable mentions: Matana Roberts, Tangled Thoughts of Leaving, Murmuure

this'll change over the years probably like it has in the past but

1. Sun Kil Moon - Admiral Fell Promises
2. The National - High Violet
3. Rome - Flowers From Exile
4. Metric - Fantasies
5. The Tallest Man On Earth - The Wild Hunt
6. Big K.R.I.T. - Returnof4eva
7. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
8. Menomena - Mines
9. Beach House - Teen Dream
10. John Frusciante - The Empyrean

Put Kindred on spot #3 if we count 'EPs that are actually the length of albums'

I was thinking of something similar a couple days ago, actually, but it was top albums of the decade thus far. This is what I came up with

burial - kindred
actress - splazsh
machinedrum - room(s)
tom waits - bad as me
darkstar - north
thee oh sees - carrion crawler / the dream
sun kil moon - admiral fell promises
isreal nash gripka - barn doors and concrete floors
big k.r.i.t - k.r.i.t wuz here
araabuzik - electronic dream

if I extended it back to 2009, the only album that would make it on there is the Kreng record.

so I'm the only one who liked Thundercat's album better than Flylo's?

for those who haven't heard it, it's called the Golden Age of Apocalypse and since Thundercat and Flylo are both on brainfeeder he has a similar sound to flylo, but more jazz-heavy, groovier and more melodic.

a bit more conventional style-wise, but I really dig it.

pretty cool lists, people!

nice to see mines show up twice, i don't like it anywhere near enough to rank it myself but i've always felt that it's quite overlooked

classical-wise i found it easiest to start with the guys' whose influence is clearly seen in contemporary music outside of the classical spectrum. debussy/satie have already been mentioned, but i'd also recommend minimalists like steve reich, arvo part and morton feldman. personally i find almost anything pre-romantic quite stifled, though, so i'm maybe not the best to ask.

oh, and my favourite king crimson album is red, by so much that any other opinion confuses me a little. but whatever!

i did, however, really enjoy the new beach house. initial impressions leave it leagues above devotion and teen dream but under self-titled. my copy of the shackleton box-set came in today as well. i listened to a few songs last night but I just got home so I think I'll listen to the two EPs and go to bed.

Aeroplane Over the Sea has moved from top 10 to a top 5 album for me.

It's weird: first listen I hated it, 2nd listen I loved how it sounded, 3rd listen I listened to the lyrics and it became one of my favorite albums, last night I got high and listened to it a 10th time and the surrealism blended with it's reality and it's really hard for me to find albums that mean more to me.

I think the original problem is that 5 years ago Icon recommended me Agaetis Byrjun at the same time as Aeroplane and I listened to Agaetis first. Agaetis is instantly "get able" because All the sounds make you feel more Beautiful than you are and Aeroplane's first listen makes you see only the ugly---at least it was that way for me.

Anyways, Icon are you telling me you didnt like friggin ZEBRA?!?!?!?!
