Not really.
Since devs can't really make AI much better in hard mode I'd just make the enemies deal more damage WITHOUT giving them more HP. Kill'em fast, be killed fast. Hard mode in most rpgs is PUMP HP so it becomes a Potion / Mana battle. -- http://img.imgcake.com/cosplaygifer.gif http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TORtanic ... Copied to Clipboard!

I do. If an RPG has multiple difficulties I'll always play Normal first. Then if I decide to play through it again I'll go on Easy if I want to rush through the story again, or Hard if the game play is satisfying / extra content is available on a higher difficulty.

Depends on the RPG. In some RPGs, playing on normal is a cakewalk and playing on hard turns the game into an actual fight for survival, which makes the game a lot more interesting. Tales of the Abyss is a good example of this.

It depends on the game. Some hard modes are created by the player such as level 1 challenges are only using one class in FF Tactics.

RPGs that have difficulty settings pretty much never do it right. Basically all you can do is raise health and damage between difficulties. I guess you could closely balance each level of difficulty with different AI and abilities and such so that it's harder, but still fun in a different way (DMC does this pretty well), but no RPG ever does that.
It's best when it's just one carefully balanced difficulty, and since it's an RPG, the player can choose to overlevel to make things easier, or underlevel/apply personal restrictions for extra challenge. -- _foolmo_ 'he says listen to my story this maybe are last chance' - ertyu quoting Tidus ... I'm not even sure what games you're talking about. The only RPGs I can think of with hard mode are Tales games, Fire Emblem Games, Kingdom Hearts, and WRPGs and I've not played a single game where it was the case that hard mode just buffed hp.

i think the only jrpgs that have had good difficulty (that i've played) have been wild arms 5, shadow hearts 3, and, more recently, FFXIII-2
not that they were particularly challenging, but most JRPGs are just too easy (FFX, SH2, XS3), a complete chore (SH1, XS2, FFXIII), or both (FF8, FF9). WA5, SH3, and XIII-2 manage some kind of balance between being too simple and being too tedious that really make them fun to play despite having pretty weak plots. I guess I should give nods to DQ8 and XS1, both of which could have afforded faster battles despite being a lot of fun. -- XS2 is the only good Xenosaga game - Lady Ashe http://backloggery.com/cwistofu ... Man, SH3 could totally have used a hard mode. The gameplay was good, and I found out if you tried to beat the game with literally only Johnny, using positioning, stock, and upgrading stellar charts became way more important and fun to use.

I think it is fun in Tales games, except at the beginning when you have no option other than to grind for a bit due to lack of equipment/spells.
But for instance in Symphonia's hard mode, pretty much every boss took me about 3 tries and I usually ended up with only myself alive and had just used all of my life bottles and gels, barely surviving. Essentially, it just makes the battles more than button mashing in Tales games, you actually have to plan/defend. -- lol ... Copied to Clipboard!

SMT usually does it fine, the health totals always remain the same and it's usually enemy damage output that's increased. Occasionally store prices, which is a bit more annoying.
Strategy RPG's also tend to be fun on hard mode, like with Fire Emblem, where you don't really have to think unless you're playing one of the harder difficulties. -- xfd dude, it's just a popularity contest on the internets. -Vlado ... Copied to Clipboard!

I only play the hardest difficulty, and I see it as a pretty big negative if there is no hard mode, as I've never played a game where I'm satisfied with the difficulty on normal mode.
If you can beat bosses without an advanced strategy and clever thinking, they are too easy. There is no satisfaction from beating an easy boss. ... Copied to Clipboard!
