I need to play more Dragon Quest. I liked V a lot for the small amount of what I played. Though IIRC I got stuck somewhere early in his being an adult and never figured out what to do after that.
I was going to recommend you try out III but then I noticed you don't have Final Fantasy 1 listed. did you not like FF1 or have you just not played it?
Looks like I'd have the opposite taste in DQ games compared to maria. DQ8 is the only one I've liked out of the 4 I played (3, 4, 7 & 8). Are any of the other DQs like 8?
the gbc version is the one I've always played, but I've heard the SNES remake has much better music quality. if you're going to play it, I'd suggest to go with that since I know that's important to you.
there's not any reason to play the NES version anymore between the other two upgrades.

although it's at the bottom of my rankings I still like viii a lot. in fact, I love all dragon quest games except vi. you should check out ix since it is very similar to iii in a lot of ways (and iii is one of the best ones) but it has a more modern sheen to it like viii which you will probably appreciate more if you're adverse to playing old RPGs.

I've tried to play III (GBC version) a couple times, but never stayed interested long enough to finish it. I was interested in IX too until I found out your PCs are basically just avatars. I'm just not too fond of RPGs where your PCs have little to no character since characters have a pretty big impact on how much I enjoy an RPG.
It probably has a lot to do with the fact that it's the first one in the series that I played. It's also the game that I've gotten most deeply into -- I recently beat in lunatic while I haven't beaten anything else on more than normal. (except pofv, which doesn't really count)
