34. You'll Be In My Heart (Tarzan)

I love Phil Collins. I think I have said this before but let me go over that again: I really love Phil Collins. When you have four songs from the same singer from the same movie it is painful to try to separate them from each other but hey it was my duty so I did my best. This is a very beautiful song. I mean ignoring anything related to the movie for a moment and just listen to the song and it is a very lovely song. I guess that’s why it got beat out by the other Tarzan songs. It is possible to ignore the movie and be like “this is a great song.” That’s the level of nitpick we have gotten to here. Also I just plain don’t like this song quite as much as the remaining Tarzan songs and that once again hurt it. Fantastic song though, Collins does another stellar job, and I could listen to this all day without a single complaint.

33. Kidnap the Sandy Claws (The Nightmare Before Christmas) – Nominated by AlphaRayAllen

There are many ways to describe this song. I have not the first clue as to where to begin. Morbid? Yes, I guess that is one way to do it. Anyone who has read any of my stories knows that the word morbid is praise from me, and that remains true here. This song is just purely entertaining and has a child-like vibe to it in both how it is suing and the humor used in the singing despite how morbid it is. I like songs that fit characters very well, and this song manages to do that. I also like how the song progresses the lore of the movie quite well. I like how they fear Jack’s wrath a little bit, but they are still Oogie Boogie’s people at the end of the day. I don’t know how others feel about this song but I think everyone can agree the lyrics are by far the highlights of this song. I don’t even know how to pick one and give an example, but basically every single line that involves them doing anything to “the Sandy Claws” is awesome. Every line. There is no exception to this.

Lalalalala.

32. A Star Is Born (Hercules) - Nominated by SuorGenoveffa

A STAR IS BORN! Words that are unimportant. A STAR IS BORN! God I love this song and I love this movie. This song is one of the greatest PUMP UP songs ever. Those Muses are very awesome and they sure as hell can sing. I don’t usually clap at the end of movies because they usually end a little less awesomely, but not here! Just a wonderful song.

Also I have refrained from doing this a lot but since we are starting to get into awesome songs from awesome movies I am going to talk about the whole ending of Hercules! I love this movie a lot and I think it has one of the best endings just because someone says “That’s Phil’s boy!” I mean come on if that isn’t fanservice to a good character I don’t even know what is. Herc’s refusal to go home because he wants to be with Meg is also heartwarming. But even before all of that when Hercules swims into the river of souls to get her and he uses every ounce of his mortal being to reach her and he is just going to fall just ever so short and then… God Mode. I think what the lesser Disney movies lack is that very real feeling of emotion and triumphant emotion. Hades’ being awesome and then getting his ass kicked was amazing for me. Sure, I think everyone likes Hades to some extent because he was the right kind of dick at all times, but when the villain loses in a Disney movie it is almost always good times. So the entire like six or so minutes of this movie are just completely awesome.

Which is, to bring it back around, capped by this song. This isn’t my favorite song from the movie (4th on this list, in fact!) but it is incredibly fitting and it has no real flaws in what it does. It captures the scene beautifully. I love those muses so much, although wasn’t most of the singing done by one person? I recall that from somewhere.

31. Theme Song (Darkwing Duck)

DARKWING DUCK! Anyone who has followed some of my exploits in the Disney contests know how much I love the character Darkwing Duck, and especially last year after DW was eliminated me and my boy Luca Blight went on a killing spree for the honor and glory of Darkwing Duck. This is the highest theme song on this list and for good reason: it is awesome and simply better than any of the other songs on this list to this point! Theme songs I think should be both tone setting as well as extremelycatchy, as the viewer is going to have to listen to this a lot or grab snacks or something before the episode begins. I always listened to this song. It fit the show extremely well and if you weren’t prepared to get dangerous by the end of it then I just don’t know what to say.

There is some massive inherent bias here given how much I loved the show and the character, but I have always stayed firm to the belief that even amazing themes can only be so high on lists such as these without having to really let my nostalgia take over for me. Darkwing Duck is an amazing character and I cherished every episode I had with him, and it was one of the very best cartoons of my childhood. I am very sentimental about certain parts of my childhood and DW is one of them. I am not even sure if it was my favorite cartoon back in the day but as the years pass and I grow older my fondness for the show and its main character only seems to grow. It has been awhile since I gave the series a watch from start to end, I should get on that.
Let’s get dangerous.

30. When You Wish Upon a Star (Pinocchio) – Nominated by BrettEagles

The word timeless is thrown around too much these days, but it is apt for this song. I think certain ideas, certain messages are so much a part of the fabric of humanity that they will continue to speak to us for as long as we let them. The message of hope and inspiration in this song is just beautiful and without many equals in all of the Disney annals. The message would have been nothing without a wonderful blend of sound in the background however and unlike many of my favorites to come this song isn't really dominated by a stellar singing performance, but more takes us along for a ride. It is a peaceful song about daring to dream and its simplicity spoke to me as I was ranking these songs. I didn't expect it to, it had been awhile since I had last chosen to listen to this song but I couldn't turn a blind ear to what I was hearing.

I said the song isn't all about the singing, and it is very true, but for a cricket Jiminy sure is one soothing little guy. Wonderful singing voice and hits every note perfectly. The nitpick for the song I guess is it just isn't in my wheelhouse of songs that I can listen to repeatedly, but that doesn't diminish my fondness for the song.

29. Stick To The Status Quo (High School Musical)

I am sure this is one of the songs that make people raise an eyebrow given what I have said about some previous songs and in the Disney halls I am sure High School Musical doesn't rank very highly on many people's lists. Good thing this isn't purely about source material then! First off the song is just catchy as hell. I literally listened to this song for about ten hours in a row when I was ranking songs and it was a lot higher on this list until I got to the heart of the next twenty or so songs which kept forcing this song back. Barely at that, mind you. I think I saw HSM once and didn't exactly hate it but this scene is pretty awesome in general. The dancing is really slick, everyone can actually sing, and the tune is disgustingly catchy. I can't say the word catchy enough in relation to this song. It got stuck in my head for days and for all of the greatness Disney has, catchy isn't usually a word I would use for them and for good reason.

The song itself is about an interesting subject as well. High school kids talking about not trying to stand out and telling their fellow students that it is okay to tell everyone their secrets until it is something they don't approve of and so they keep telling them to stick to what they know. I think beyond the fun tune there is a real message there, which helped the song a little bit. In terms of how much I enjoyed listening to the song this song could have been so high it would have made some of you sick I am sure, but songs higher on this list managed to beat it out for their humor, for their epic nature, for what they contributed to their movies overall, and a lot of them I do enjoy listening to over and over more.

Now I am going to hum this song for about an hour, damnit. Not again... Sigh, I guess I better update again just so I have another song to listen to or else or I am going to be hopeless for awhile.

28. Prince Ali (Aladdin) – Nominated by Anagram

I like Friend Like Me, I love Prince Ali. Everything about this song is extremely over the top and it would not be so high on this list if it wasn't this way. Some songs just thrive by doing everything they possibly can do show off. This is one of the best show off songs ever. Aladdin comes back to knock everyone else off of their feet and he gets the best helper this side of God almighty himself: the Genie. The Genie's steady use of commentary and being able to break up his not so great singing aspects by making more vocal based jokes really is what makes this song so much stronger than Friend Like Me. Jafar trying to stop him from entering near the end is pretty great comedy as well.

There is a lot I could say about this song but I am honestly not sure where I would even begin. It just explodes in front of your face in a way few songs do. It assaults the senses with information for both the viewer and for the city inside the movie to take in of this new, impressive Prince figure. The little touch of Jasmine huffing away has always made me smile at this part of the movie. Overall the flow to this song is superb and it does exactly what it was meant to do: make a big splash. I think this actually might be my favorite scene from Aladdin even though I have a song higher than it. The Genie's singing voice isn't special but the spectacle of it all is really something to behold. Aladdin is an amazing movie though so it is hard to pick out favorite spots, and I'll get more into what makes the movie awesome during its last song.

I do not!

I love the reprise to Prince Ali, and it would probably rank a little bit higher than the original just because villains remixing songs is pretty awesome. One of the catchier reprises in Disney's history, I think.

27. Down To Earth (Wall-E) – Nominated by RySenkari

What a great credits song. Just superb. Peter Gabriel is such an amazing singer who has such a varied voice that this song isn't even my favorite Peter Gabriel song I have listened to on Youtube in the past 24 hours. Book of Love from Scrubs finale, for those curious. But that being said I absolutely love this song for a variety of reasons. For starters I did mention Peter Gabriel's voice right? Absolutely perfect for the song. Secondly the lyrics are immensely clever in their callbacks to the film itself and you can tell the song was written for the movie, which isn't always readily apparent. I feel like good use of sound effects and instruments can be so underrated in most great Disney songs. This song has so much depth to it that I feel like I am discovering something new every time I listen to it. Subtle touches go a long way with me and this song has a lot of them.

Above all else the song is just really entertaining to listen to though, and this is what credits music should be. Something fun and enjoyable as you walk out of the theatre that makes you want to stay in your seat a little bit longer to soak in that last bit of enjoyment out of a movie. I was harsh on the Incredits and with good reason given how stellar credits music is capable of being, although throwing Peter Gabriel comparisons at anyone is kind of mean I guess.

Now the reason the song isn't higher is I feel it drags on just a little bit too much at the end there. When I have to separate great songs from other great songs such minor flaws put it where it is at. Nonetheless, I think this is just an amazing song and it was a really awesome nomination as I doubt I would have thought of it if I was doing a list of my own!

The animation sequence for WALL-E's end credits is like god tier. It's so beautiful and provocative and unique the way the art evolves from cave painting to Renaissance to modern art within the span of like four minutes. It's exceptional!

Top 26 note:

Before I begin the top 26 I think it is important, for my own sanity if nothing else, that I get the following statement of the way: The next 26 songs I consider flawless. As you may have noticed by now the last several dozen songs I have been nitpicking as much as I could to place them. There was just no nitpicking left from here on out. I have literally nothing bad to say about any of these next 26 songs. Literally. Now of course flawless is different from perfect, and I obviously was able to rank the songs in order based on my personal preference but I consider the gap between 26 and 27 to be major in my mind in that 27 compared to 26 was "no way in hell is this better than this" while 26 to, say, 15 or so was "damnit this is hard where does this song go ergh" and it involved a lot of hair pulling.

I wanted to say that so I don't have to get into that. The rankings for the next 13 or 14 songs was extremely, extremely brutal. It got easier for my top 12 actually, but that is still around the corner.

And yeah, I know 26 songs is a lot to consider flawless, but I love me some Disney.

26. I'll Make a Man Out of You (Mulan) – Nominated by GenesisSaga

I used to listen to this song all day, and that is because the song is incredibly awesome. I don't think that there are a lot of training montage songs in Disney's vast library so this stands out pretty well! I pretty much just love everything about this song from beginning to end. The pacing, the word usage, the humor and spirit referenced all throughout really highlights this song amazingly well. What I think this song does better than most is blend in an exceptional amount of characterization with very little said. Even if you weren't really paying attention up until this point you get what is going on inside of people's heads as this incredibly powerful sounding piece of music is playing. You can almost hear the disgust in Shang's voice as he is trying to teach all of those idiots what it means to be a man in the army and how pessimistic he learns to be.

If this had been a year ago, back when I was on a major Mulan kick, this song would have probably made the top ten. It barely missed the cut now even, to tell you how close everything ended up being. This song also has one of the best chorus out of all of the songs on this list, outstripping a wide margin of the remaining songs in my book. I am also a sucker for turnaround stories so the part of the movie the song is about makes me very happy. It goes from being hopeless to the entire group getting stuff done. I have to confess though I never did like Mulan kicking everyone's ass randomly at the end, it felt so weird. Nothing to do with the song or its ranking mind you, it just always struck me as out of place logically. I guess she is just that awesome.

Thanks for the great nomination Gen!

I wouldn't ;-)... Although it's probably somewhere in my top 100...

I'll Make a Man Out of You became one of my favorite Disney songs in the last few days or so.

I agree that maybe Mulan kicking everyone's ass randomly seems weird, but the moment when she goes up to get the arrow is just perfect in terms of montage with the song.
