Board 8 > How does EXA compare to the rest of the Shining series?

I only own EXA and haven't started it yet.

1. Do I need to know anything about the series before starting it?
2. Can someone rank the series with EXA in it?

1. EXA is a standalone title that has little to do with the original series, so you'll be fine starting the game without prior knowledge of the other titles. Also the gameplay is hack and slash style, as opposed to a strategy RPG.

2. 3 Scenario 1 > 3 Scenario 3 > 3 Scenario 2 > 2 > 3 Premium Disc > Shining Force CD > 1 > EXA

I would still like to play Shining the Holy Ark at some point.

Well, you played scenario 2 and 3 so i presume you have the ability to play Holy Ark.

Anyway yeah EXA is standalone, but its not really a good indicator of what the series is about.
