Shogun 2 (and its expansions, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai) constitute my some of my favorite games. I actually just got finished playing it for the last 3 hours, I was trying an Ikko Ikki campaign. It got off to a good start, but it's going pretty badly. Just lost too provinces to the Oda clan.
Which clan are you thinking of playing as?

Anchorage
Fairbanks is depressing. actually most of Alaska outside of Anchorage is not my favorite. there's not much there and as you move north it's dark all the time.

She didn't mind the 'dark all the time' for the duration of her stay but admitted she'd dislike it if she had to experience it for more than a couple of years.
Yeah, I got lots of stories about how depressing Fairbanks was though for sure. Lots of native drunks with nothing to do.
My personal favorite clan is the Takeda clan, but they're a little rough to start off with. Most people seem to recommend Chosokabe or Shimazu, if that matters to you.
Of course, the "winners" of the historical war were the Oda and Tokugawa clans, but ironically they are two of the hardest clans to play as, mostly due to their horrible starting conditions

I picked Shimazu right before clicking this topic again
normal difficulty short campaign
let's go

for me it's hard to get motivated during winter months where it's always dark and always freezing outside. I had a couple rough patches during college because of that. I think it affects some people more than others though. I've thought about moving to California for the last year or so.

Started a new campaign as the Shimazu. I have most of Kyushu. Only need two more provinces. Managed to stamp all traces of Christianity off the island as well

Are you employing a high number of samurai? If so, that could be your problem. They have insane upkeep. It's best to fill most of your spots with ashigaru

mostly every time I declare war on someone else they always seem to have a bigger army than me, and this is after I spent some turns building stuff up in preparation for invasion.
my only experience with the series before this is Rome but playing on normal difficulty there I was rarely outclassed in army size, seems like I usually am here.
on an unrelated note, man the load times for this game are severe
Are you making samurai or ashigaru? Samurai will bankrupt you very quickly in the early game, and will be overwhelming by the sheer numbers of enemy ashigaru. It's better to have larger numbers of cheaper troops early on. Once you have enough soldiers to field up to the unit cap in battle, you can start replacing ashigaru with samurai.
Managed to take over Kyushu and am making a foothold into Honshu. Not sure if I should do a double pincer attack. Have my Daimyo and one of his sons invade Honshu, and have his heir and another son invade Shikoku. I'd be able to move through quickly, but I'm worried about triggering realm divide.
