Oh good, something I can comment on.

Lufia II is excellent for all the reasons you've mentioned. I was quite surprised back when I played it sometime around 2000. It's one of those games I've gone back to more than a couple of times, so that tells me a lot. And yes, the ending was stunning and I loved it for that.

Bonus Question: What is a game that you didn’t have high expectations for that you ended up really liking?

Quite possibly Lufia II. Otherwise maybe Baldur's Gate.

What’s your favorite Godot moment from Trials & Tribulations?

As the #1 Godot hater on this board... case 3-4

What is a game that you didn’t have high expectations for that you ended up really liking?

Hmm... can't remember the last time I didn't expect a lot from a game and got a pleasant surprise. There were those demos of MediEvil and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 that sold me on the series. Oh, and War of the Monsters, that was surprisingly fun. Infinite Space as well.

Godot is one of my favourite characters ever. Great choice!

What’s your favorite Godot moment from Trials & Tribulations?

I think I'd have to highlight the moment at the end of 4-4 when he smashes his coffee mug.

What is a game that you didn’t have high expectations for that you ended up really liking?

Final Fantasy XIII. The negativity surrounding it gave me low expectations for it, but it ended up impressing me quite a lot.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Final Fantasy XIII moment?

Ugh...

I don't know. I guess Lightning punching Snow, realizing the game world had finally opened up when I got to Gran Pulse and taking down my first Adamantoise. Not a whole lot really did much for me with this game.

Favourite FFXIII moment is easily reaching the Archylte Steppe on Gran Pulse. The contrast with Cocoon is stark - the expansiveness, the scale, the colour, the planet hanging in the sky, the wildlife charging, flying, meandering around, the sound of the tortoise's stamps. It's an awesome moment, and one that shows there's still a sliver of directorial skill in SE.

Might've been me that told you to play Lufia 2. Well I know I encouraged it at least when it was doing well in NCAA or ABGC or something (I think this was the context, anyway). Great game.

Bonus Question: What is a game that you didn’t have high expectations for that you ended up really liking?

Lots. Guitar Hero is one. Didn't really think the rhythm genre would appeal to me but it's excellent. Fate/Stay Night as well-- replace "rhythm" with "visual novel" also the whole fear that the porn thing would make it impossible to take seriously (luckily there isn't much of it). Was also pretty skeptical of Phoenix Wright coming in.

Choose not to answer the Godot question just because I can't really remember any great moments he had-- silly (but good) quotes do not really a moment make.

Well you need to beat New Game+ to even access it but... it's awesome. It's just a bonus game that starts you in the Ancient Cave town (unable to go anywhere else) that lets you bring whoever you want into the cave. Hell yeah Maxim/Dekar/Lexis/Guy party. I mean it's only awesome if you actually played the death out of the Ancient Cave I guess. Did you even play the cave at all? I guess I just have a weakness for randomly generated dungeons with loot-- hey Diablo 2.

Strange thing about that game. First time I played through it I felt real bad for Tia, and was bitter towards Selan then like... when I replayed it recently I thought Tia was kind of terrible and Selan was actually kinda cool-- though I can't really hate her because of that first memory I guess. I guess my tastes in characters have changed quite a bit since I was like 12.

Also, reaching Gran Pulse was actually when I completely lost interest in FF13. The battle system really isn't good enough to warrant seeking out random battle, and the game's story went from tight and focused (still wasn't very good but I appreciated that) to 'whatever' as soon as you hit that area. Plus I liked the gloomy environments up to that point, and felt like Gran Pulse clashed with the overall feel of the game.

I don't think I even bothered with the Ancient Cave. That's not really my sort of thing. I'm not big into the ridiculously long optional super dungeon stuff. I did Via Infinito in FFX-2 just so I could get the Perfect Ending, but I cheated the heck out of that thing using the Happy Gunner/Catnip trick just so I could finish it as quickly as possible.

The Great Circus Mystery starring Mickey and Minnie for SNES. I can't really come up with anything I had low expectations for that I enjoyed thoroughly. It's usually the opposite. I don't usually get a game unless I have some good expectations. I don't usually play friends' games or get game presents.

Actually, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.

42. Zidane Tribal (Final Fantasy IX)
Quote: “I just wanna protect the people I’m with. Doesn’t matter if I can or not. It’s what I believe in.”
external image

Anyone who knows me knows that I love Final Fantasy, and I love Final Fantasy leads. Zidane, of course, is no exception. Granted, like with most things FFIX on Board 8, Zidane is a bit overloved here, but he’s still pretty great, as evidenced by the fact that he’s on this list. Regardless, the point of these writeups is to talk about why I like the guy so much, but I had to throw that in there before we got started.

I suppose the main thing that I like about Zidane is his dedication to everyone around him, like in the quote above. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to help people in need, whether they want it or not, like helping Amarant at Ipsen’s Castle or going back into the Iifa Tree in the ending to help Kuja. “You don’t need a reason to help people,” as his famous tagline goes (although he never actually says that in the game, much like almost everyone else with their taglines). He shows an open and honest concern for the problems of his friends, which is a stark contrast to what we saw in Cloud and Squall. He’s not afraid to show he really cares, which is cool.

Anyway, despite being a nice change of pace from the brooding leads of the previous two main series installments, perhaps my favorite Zidane moment is the “You’re Not Alone!” scene, mostly because it’s a role reversal from what we’re used to seeing from him, so it really stands out (Plus, the music is awesome, of course). We’ve been used to seeing Zidane reaching out to help others, even if they may not have wanted it, but now we see his friends sticking by him and bringing him through it, even as he tries to spurn them. Dagger sums it up best at the very end: “You’ve always protected us. But you still don’t understand that we looked out for you, too! We watched your back while you watched ours. And we believed in you the same way you believed in us! Just like you protected us…We want to protect you.” It’s just a really touching scene, I think.

Another Zidane moment I really like is him rescuing Dagger and Eiko in Alexandria at the beginning of Disc 3. I just love it as he swoops in at the last moment just when it seems like all hope is lost. That was probably his most “heroic” moment, so I really like it. I also really like the ending, where he leaves everyone behind to try to help Kuja, and the party expresses their gratitude to him for all he’s done for them. It was nice to see that he made a meaningful impact in their lives, which kind of reflects my own desire to make a difference in people’s lives, so that’s probably why it appeals to me so much. I also like the mad dash to get to Kuja and the Matrix-like moment where everything freezes and the two of them just kind of stare at each other for a minute. Then the end where he reunites with Dagger after everyone thinks he’s been dead for a year (although did anyone here really not realize the guy in the cloak was Zidane, not Marcus?) and the whole “Bring my beloved Dagger to me!” line. It was kind of nice for them both to finally admit how they feel about each other instead of acting like middle school kids trying to act like they don't actually like each other like they had for most of the game. Anyway, yeah, Zidane’s cool.

Oh, by the way, I love the picture I used for this writeup. That was my desktop background for about a year after I beat FFIX back in the day.

Also, just a little question regarding FFIX I'm not totally sure about (STILL SPOILERS TERRITORY SO TURN AWAY NOW):

Okay, when Zidane goes to talk to Garland in Pandemonium, they have that big discussion about how Zidane was supposed to be his Angel of Death, and how Kuja was only supposed to be a placeholder until Zidane grew into maturity. So the idea is that Kuja is mortal but Zidane is immortal, right? But then Zidane rejects Garland's offer, and Garland says he has to make Zidane into a regular Genome because of it, as much as he hates to do it. So is Zidane still immortal after all that or not? I'm not really sure.

I knew what that link would be as soon as I read that you loved it. Time to make you jealous a tad -- I still have that poster. I don't even remember where it came from, although I'm worried that it was from the strategy guide, giving a single reason to be thankful for one of the worst guides in history. But yeah, it's still in acceptable enough condition too, hanging up in my bedroom. Love that picture man. So sweet.

As for the FFIX thing, it's been a while again and that's one of the only things my mind is ever fuzzy about. Kuja is definitely mortal though, and as for Zidane, I never really got the vibe that he was supposed to be immortal, just better in every way. Stronger, faster, probably slated to live for a significantly longer period of time.

I guess immortality would make sense too given the Terrans and especially Garland's lives. But I would go out on a limb and say if Zidane were predestined to be immortal but Garland chose to tamper with his would-have-been fate like that, then he probably wouldn't be immortal thereafter.

Anyway, you listed pretty much all the reasons Zidane is great. Pretty much any time in the game someone else is in distress and he's there for them I smile; he's a great lead. The amount of times he at least tries to help Vivi in particular really endears him to me. And of course "You're Not Alone" is just terrific in a way that wouldn't work half as well if Zidane were a different sort of character.

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Final Fantasy IX character?

Probably Vivi, followed very closely by Zidane.

You're not alone is a bad scene aside from the music. I always think it's funny that people call Squall and Cloud "emo" while turning around and praising Zidane because that scene is the only time in the FF series where a character has come off as "emo" to me.

I'm not sure if that's a big part of why I'm not big on Zidane but it certainly doesn't help his case.

Vivi is the only really good character in FF9. Kuja is good and then you've got a handful that are okay.
