40. NBA Jam: Tournament Edition
external image

Just a little “fun fact that nobody else but me really cares about” before we start: The original NBA Jam was released on my birthday, and my initials are J.A.M.! So cool, right? Yeah, anyway…This is another one of those games I used to play at the arcade all the time until it came out on the SNES, and I switched over to that. Like I mentioned in the NFL Blitz writeup, while I do enjoy a “normal” sports game from time to time, I’ve found I’ve had more fun playing crazy sports games like this. I just love the crazy dunks, shoving people around, being ON FIRE, and of course, the awesome announcer (FROM DOWNTOWN! BOOMSHAKALAKA!).

Tournament Edition added a few new features, like powerups, hot spots (A circle would appear on the floor with a number on it (from 4 to 8), and if you hit a shot while standing on it, you would get that number of points instead of the usual 2 or 3), and things like that. Of course, these things were totally optional, and you could turn them off if you didn’t feel like messing with them, but they were a cool way to change things up once in a while. It was fun having a powerup that literally let you dunk from anywhere on the court or that let you shove your opponent halfway across the court.

I remember a few years back when I was in college, a friend of mine brought his SNES and he had a copy of NBA Jam. A few of my friends and I played around with it, and we found that we had different playstyles. A couple of my friends thought it was weird that I shoved people around all the time and focused on dunks instead of trying to swipe the ball and focusing on shooting three-pointers. Another one of my friends played more like I did. I just thought it was kind of interesting seeing how differently we played it. I remember we had one really awesome game where it was really close all the way through, and I had the ball at the end down one point. I ran in and went for the dunk, and my friend was getting ready to try to block it. Then at the last second, I passed it to my teammate who was standing wide open at the three point line, and I drained it at the buzzer for the win. It was pretty awesome. Ah, good times.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite sports game?

(FF9 SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST TWO QUESTIONS)

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Final Fantasy IX character?
- Kuja. Vivi and Zidane close behind. For a less obvious one, Baku always struck me as awesome.

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite non-human video game character?
- Possibly Kuja again.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite handheld game?
- Wow, big question. Probably either Phoenix Wright or one of the Pokemon games, but there's a lot of competition.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Mass Effect race?
- Other than the one against time to stop the Reapers, you mean? I don't know, probably Salarian, don't know why.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite sports game?
- A Football Manager game. I guess the latest one's the best, although I have the best memories of the FM08 game 'cause I had a particularly good save file on it.

Meh, been running through this list quickly because the topic's already nearing 500, so I guess I'll just answer a couple of the more recent questions since a lot of the others I'm not qualified for anyway.

Favorite game that's been collecting dust: Probably Sonic Adventure 2. God, I was absolutely crazy about that game back in the day.

Favorite Star Fox 64 level: Hm, tough choice (warning: spoilers ahead!). Macbeth's pretty cool because of the awesome ending if you fulfill the requirements to go to Area 6 (and if you screw that up, you instead get possibly the toughest boss battle in the game), and I always liked Zoness (not sure why; I just do), but I think I've gotta go with Sector X.

Start with the awesome music; Sector X is my favorite soundtrack in the game, although Bolse is a close second (of course, you don't get to hear Bolse's BGM for very long because it switches over to the boss theme as soon as you finish shooting down the six force field towers), and it's also got some of the better storyline depth in the game. You get there, and the team is expecting to be attacking one of Andross's bases, but the entire thing is just wreckage and the Star Fox team has no idea why. Then they get to the end (providing that you don't take a detour into the Warp Zone--note also that this is the only stage in the game where the path splits into three rather than two) and run into Spyborg, a deranged prototype robot that went rogue and wrecked the place and is currently looking for "the creator", which is to say Andross. Also, while a sufficiently skilled player won't even get to see this, if you're still a newcomer, you might notice that something's up when the boss battle begins. Normally when one of your wingmen gets shot down, they're out for the entirety of the following stage, but if you lost Slippy on Fortuna (or Katina, but if you're good enough at this game to get to Katina you're probably good enough to not be losing wingmen outside of the Star Wolf battle on Venom), he'll unexpectedly return at the start of the battle, displaying the boss health meter like usual. And, of course, halfway through the meter suddenly drops to zero--pretty much the exact opposite of what happened in Meteo, when the boss claimed to be defeated but still had half of his life bar. So now the health bar's down to zero and the killer robot looks to be inactive...and then it comes back to life with a musical stinger and starts shaking its finger, mockingly, like "Nuh-uh-uh, don't you dare think I'm finished yet!" Yes, you are now being taunted by a robot. And there's no longer any glowing yellow target to aim at, and after just a very short time, Slippy jumps in and offers to help, and with his usual lack of competence gets swatted away and lands on the desert planet of Titania, and the end-of-level dialogue if you ended up on this route really makes you feel like things just took a serious turn for the worse. End spoilers here.

Favorite Tales of Symphonia Moment: (Okay, more spoilers here.) Wow. Truly amazing game there. Hard to top the one that you mentioned, especially if I'm limited to just the first game. (Although in fairness, the original Tales of Symphonia easily bests Dawn of the New World when it comes to dramatic moments--it's only in comedy where the sequel is able to outshine the original.) But...I think perhaps the first trip to the Tower of Salvation, the one in Sylvarant, could contend. All this time you think that you're helping to save the world, and suddenly the Tower is full of corpses and Remiel isn't really Colette's father and this entire thing has been a scam. And then right after you beat Remiel, suddenly Kratos betrays you, and at this point nobody has betrayed you yet so it comes as a surprise. Okay, enough spoilers. We're done here.

Favourite ToS moment is probably the same as yours, with the one Tsunami describes close behind (might've beaten it if I hadn't seen it coming).

Small aside about ToS - great game to play through with a friend. So few RPGs offer proper 2-player, and it's such a fun battle system to have more than one person play with. Only downside (beyond arguments over who's Lloyd) is that it can make it a bit too easy - my friend and I beat Abyssion on the first try without having really done much grinding.

Also I don't know if anyone is good at archiving stuff on the Board 8 Wiki, but I am not. I always get messed up by the formatting and stuff. So if someone wants to archive stuff before this thing before it hits 500, that would be great.

39. Tifa Lockhart (Final Fantasy VII)
Quote: “Give me a little longer…Just a little bit longer…This day will never come again…So let me have this moment…”
external image

*checks both ways to make sure no Ulti is coming* Okay, I think it’s clear. For the record, I love that Tifa pic on the left. I prefer her Advent Children redesign, but that one picture is so good. Also, I dealt enough with the whole “Tifa is a horrible person because she didn’t tell Cloud the truth” crap in my FF characters writeup I did for her a couple years ago, so if you want to read what I think about that, you can find it on the Board 8 Wiki. I’m not going to deal with it here because it would take too much time and space, and these writeups are declarations of my love for these characters, not me defending them, so yeah.

Anyway, I’ve always really liked Tifa. I almost always keep her in my party whenever she’s available (Cloud/Tifa/Barret for life). I think she’s a sweet, caring person. She expresses concern for her fellow party members almost in a motherly way. I find it kind of endearing, really. I’ve always enjoyed her relationship with Cloud, and I was a proponent of Cloud/Tifa before Advent Children essentially made it the official pairing! I enjoy their interactions, and I usually try to get the Date Scene with Tifa at Gold Saucer. I liked the scene where they made the promise at the well as teenagers, if only because of my own childhood dream to rescue the damsel in distress myself! It’s kind of interesting to watch Cloud and Tifa awkwardly try to express their feelings for one another throughout the game, I guess because I can kind of relate to the nervousness of trying to tell someone you like how you feel about them, wondering how they’ll react. So I guess I relate to Tifa’s shyness and I find it charming in a way.

Tifa is involved in most of my favorite scenes in the game as well. I love the Lifestream dive where she helps Cloud (and herself as well) finally learn the truth about himself and what happened at Nibelheim five years before. Her interaction with Cloud is top notch in this part, and it’s probably the scene where they’re the most honest with each other about their feelings. The beginning of Disc 2 at Junon is really awesome, too. I like the scene before she wakes up where she remembers meeting Cloud again at the Sector 7 train station, and she starts to explain her motives about why she did what she did. Plus, there’s also the slap fight with Scarlet, the greatness of which speaks for itself. The scene at the end of Disc 2 is great, too, especially the “good” version you get if your Affection Rating is high enough, since she expresses her feelings for Cloud a little more openly. I’ve seen people criticize her for being “needy” or “clingy,” but I don’t really see it. She’s often unsure of herself, but being with Cloud gives her some reassurance and confidence.

Tifa is really good in Advent Children, too. Her fight with Loz is really good, mostly because they kept it from getting TOO over the top. They also added a really nice touch to Advent Children Complete in a scene involving Tifa. There’s the part during the battle with Bahamut SIN where it destroys a building and the wreckage is falling toward Tifa, who’s been knocked down to the ground and is struggling to get up. At that moment, Cloud is arriving on the scene on his motorcycle, and when he sees Tifa in trouble, you can see two reflections in his eyes, one of Tifa in her current situation and the other showing Aerith with Sephiroth about to kill her, which prompts him to speed up and reach her before it’s too late. That was really cool.

Also, I really like Tifa's Limit Break. One of my most satisfying FFVII battle moments was nailing all Seven "Yeah!" slots for her Limit Break. Aw yeah

Bonus Question: What is your FFVII party of choice?

The main difference is that there's more dialogue. There's a lot of stuff Tifa won't say if you don't have a high enough Affection Rating. Cloud's lines will be a little different, too.

Also, Tifa's reaction when she finds out that everyone saw them having their "moment" will be different.

Uhhh time to catch up on bonus questionz:

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Tales of Symphonia moment?
The first visit to the Tower of Salvation for sure. I've actually never done the moment your write-up was on, though. I like the guy too much. Someday I'll do it though.

Bonus Question: What is your FFVII party of choice?
Cloud, Yuffie, Tifa. I usually mix up the third, though. Barret and Vincent see a lot of time there too.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite TWEWY moment?
The first week in general, really. The game seems a lot better early when you're not sure what's going on and the formula is fresh. After the first week it kinda feels repetitive to me. Also Shiki is the best partner of the three by far.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite handheld game?
Fire Emblem 7. Just got the best cast of the FE series by far which really helps me get into the gameplay better.

Would answer the Mass Effect race but I don't really feel strong about the races in ME1 and haven't played the others. I could say Quarrian (or whatever Tali is-- I think that's right) but that'd be more "Tali's great" than "Quarrians are great"

Also while we're on the topic of Tifa I do think that Cloud x Tifa is the best romantic pairing in Final Fantasy, for what that's worth. Thing is I don't think that's a particularly strong point of Final Fantasy games but it's pretty much the only one I find kinda convincing anyway. It's nice because it's one of the few that gets explicitly built on in the game. The others are either pre-established or they're built with random romantic scenes that are just sorta there for no real reason (looking at you TidusxYuna). And her limit breaks are pretty cool.

So I guess I endorse her being on the list is what I'm saying.

Yeah, I think it's pretty underrated overall. I kinda wish Advent Children dealt with their relationship, too. It's just sort of implied that they're together, but it's hard to tell how "serious" their relationship is because they never talk about it. In all fairness, Cloud and Tifa are together in the same scenes for like five minutes the entire movie, but still.

39. Super Smash Bros. Melee
external image

It’s hard not to love Smash Bros. (although some are easier to love than others, I suppose). I have lots of fond memories associated with the series as a whole, but there’s no doubt the one I spent the most time with was Melee, mostly because I never owned the original (I just rented it a bunch from Blockbuster) and by the time Brawl came out, my days of massive multiplayer sessions with my friends were behind me, although I have had a few here and there. I actually haven’t touched any Smash game in a few years because I have no one to play with, and once you do everything in a single-player mode of a primarily multiplayer game, I find it hard to go back to single-player with any sort of regularity.

In any case, Melee was always a fun game we could sink hours into. We even did a few sessions of 99 minute and 99 stock fights (including one on Poke Floats, of all places, that one was…something). I’ve found that it’s pretty easily accessible compared to other fighting games, especially for people who don’t really play fighters. Not to say that it’s easier for them to be good or get good quickly at Smash Bros. compared to “regular” fighters, but they just seem to have more fun playing it, whether they win or not (and my friends very, very rarely beat me, and I’m not all that good). On the other hand, most of them didn’t really like playing Street Fighter with me, even though the skill disparity was roughly the same.

Dealing with Melee specifically, I’m going to say something that’s probably a bit strange (or maybe not, who knows): The area where it excels the most compared to the other two games is its stages. Almost every stage was fun, even if you had to mix it up a bit by playing special battles (Super Sudden Death while everyone is forced to play on the bottom level in Hyrule Temple is loads of fun). Even total gimmick levels like Poke Floats are fun when done right (and 99 minute Melee isn’t one of them). The only level we were absolutely not allowed to pick was the Ice Climbers stage. Auto-scroll no thanks (although apparently Sakurai must have thought everyone loved it since he decided to include multiple auto-scroll stages in Brawl!). Well, let me amend that statement a bit. Rainbow Ride is pretty fun despite its auto-scroll, but it succeeded because the level wasn’t entirely auto-scroll, and it mixed up its auto-scroll by doing both vertical and horizontal while keeping the stage relatively open. Okay, I think I’ve said “auto-scroll” enough times for one writeup. On the other hand, there are quite a few stages in Brawl that I just don’t enjoy playing. They went a little overboard with stage gimmicks in that one.

As far as characters go, whenever I played with friends, I usually mixed it up and played with a bunch of different characters. However, my favorite characters to use overall were Kirby and Luigi. I love being able to steal powers from well known Nintendo characters and use them. I love Kirby’s crazy specials, and I love his awesome throws. I know he’s low tier in Melee, but I never played with anyone good, so it didn’t matter much to me! Luigi was fun if I felt like being more of a “risk taker,” if you will. I would try to land random exploding Green Missiles and pull off flaming uppercuts as much as I could. It was fun to be able to KO someone successfully with those moves. As far as items go, I was the king with the Home Run Bat. My friends would run away if I ever got one, and if they ever got to it first, they would literally throw it off the side so I couldn’t get it. Good times.

I really dislike Advent Children, as I realized for good and all upon rewatching Complete somewhat recently. But Tifa's representation is one of its brighter spots. Not bright enough for me to be likely to ever rewatch it again at this point, but bright enough to be noteworthy. She was handled pretty darn well in that flick.

Cloud/Tifa and Tidus/Yuna are definitely among the better FF pairings, although I agree with Lopen that as a general rule of thumb the series isn't really all that terrific about them anyway.

Tifa herself is a good character and I mostly concur with Leon on all things Tifa-related. Good write-up.

Bonus Question: What is your FFVII party of choice?

I move it around pretty often but Cloud/Tifa/Barret is the most constant. Aerith, Cid, Vincent, Red and Yuffie all find their way into the ranks for at least a moderate stretch of the game though. The only party member I don't generally use very often is Cait Sith.

Bonus Question: Who is your main in Super Smash Bros. Melee?

Main: Marth
Secondary: Link
Tertiary: Roy

Yeah, I get that with Marth. I'm not a big fan of his in Melee, admittedly. I think he's kinda boring.

My stepbro used Roy all the time, and almost half of his deaths in any given game were self-destructs from trying to kill people with Roy's Up-B, missing, and falling helplessly off the side. Another one of my friends used DK because he loved his charge punch.

Well, I use everyone at some point in FFVII. I like to mix it up as well, but Cloud/Tifa/Barret is my favorite.

Basically, to me, "party of choice" is the party you take with you to the final dungeon because for me, I always take my favorite arrangement to the final dungeon.

Oh, well in that case Cloud/Tifa/Barret. Although I do sprinkle some Vincent in there from time to time, not because I love him as a character but because it's fun having a dedicated mage in FFVII on occasion. (I never really do that with Cloud.)

Hmmm...I never really dedicate any particular party member to be a certain "class" in FFVII. I tend to mix and match my Materia. Everyone has Cure+All and Enemy Skill as catch-alls, but everything else varies from game to game.

Well, except for the fact that Cloud gets Ultima and KOTR, Tifa gets Steal and Contain, and Barret gets Comet.

Don't ask me why I always give Steal to Tifa. It's a habit I started years ago, and I can't break it now.

Well, Vincent's just... a really good mage. I look at the innate Attack and Magic stats and go from there. Dexterity too. I realize the game is completely beatable (to put it quite lightly) without so much as a single f*** given toward such things but I love goin' the extra mile and feeling a bit more like the party members have assigned job classes.

I can understand why some would dislike that.

Tifa's Dexterity stat is pretty good so Steal is alright on her, anyway, so it doesn't really make me bat a lash. I mean, at least Yuffie and Red are better, but...

Also, I tend to have Steal on Tifa too.

Well, "jobs" and "classes" are things that don't really have any appeal to me, so I guess that's generally why I don't care about doing that kind of stuff in games that don't have them. I do have a lot of RPG "habits," if you will, though. In FFVIII, I almost always have the same three GF arrangements and switch them around between characters as they're in the party.

Yeah, the whole job/class thing has never really appealed to you so I figured it wouldn't matter much. But I love the Job Class system and I also treasure IV/IX's preset 'classes' gig as well. Complete 'looseness' with such issues is probably my least favorite style, as seen in games like VIII and to a great extent, XII vanilla.

I dunno. With RPGs, I prefer something a bit more simple and straightforward. Stuff like job classes tend to get needlessly complicated for me, and I stick with a handful of job classes without ever really branching out (like, I don't think I've ever used a Summoner, a Mediator, a Calculator, a Bard, a Dancer, a Mime, or a Samurai in FFT, as strange as that's going to sound coming from someone who's beaten the game at least 5 times). Stuff like what you get in FFVII and FFVIII are pretty simple despite their "looseness," so I like them.

I do like "defined" job classes, too, since they also tend to be simple. Heck, part of the reason I like systems like the Sphere Grid and the Crystarium is that they're simple and easy to use, yet fun.

Never... ever used a Summoner or a Samurai? Man, I mean, stuff like Calculator is just hax but those two are really, really fun. Same with Dancer. You should try them sometime, just for the heck of it! They aren't complex (Calculator is, kinda) but they're very fun! And very good too. :)

Sphere Grid is ace.

Bonus Question: What is your FFVII party of choice?

I honestly don't know if I have one. But I do tend to have 3 set-ups of materia (varying it for equipment certain characters have, of course) that I move around in blocks.

Bonus Question: Who is your main in Super Smash Bros. Melee?

Fox. Which was annoying when I found out how he's the elitist character. As if to prove a point, my secondary character is Ganondorf (although my tertiary character is Marth...).

Great memories in Melee of me and my friend (same one I played ToS with). We'd do Fox Vs Fox, but we didn't have Final Destination as our locale, we had the underground bit in Hyrule Temple, and it'd become making 10-stock matches last about an hour. Good times.

Ugh Tifa. I'll leave it at that.

Bonus Question: What is your FFVII party of choice?

Cloud / Barret / Aeris (Disk 1 only)
Cloud / Barret / Yuffie (the rest)

Cid and Red are also in my party pretty often. Never use Cait Sith, Vincent or Tifa unless I have to.
