Also the whole thing is starting to get international coverage, saw articles in '' Le Monde '' and Al Jazeera for instance.

That's how much you pay in Quebec per semester right now? Pre hike? So it will be like, 4k+ a semester after the hike?

Are you sure?

http://quebectuitionfees.ca/howmuch.php

This makes it sound like right now, you guys pay $2800 per year, and it'll go up to $4700 per year by 2016/2017.

So right now that means you are paying $1400 per semester and $2350 in 5 years.

That website seems pretty accurate, Cly. Tuition fees themselves are a little over 2k/year right now - to go up to ~3.7k/year by 2016/2017. Total university bills will depend on the university, but I guess the average will go from ~3k to ~4.7k/year (not semester).

Don't really see the problem, 4.7k a year is still less than I pay in tuition, and as someone that only works low wage jobs in the summer and took out student loans to pay my way.... the tuition costs are not that big of a deal. Most of my costs came from supporting myself paying rent, food, car insurance etc.

Big deal Quebec, get over it.

Don't see the tax rate being a big deal either; the sales tax might hurt a bit but you don't even pay income taxes as students and you won't for several years after graduating.

It's mostly isolated to Quebec as far as Action goes. Sure others talk but.. talk is cheap... 75% is a big raise.. Guess someone's overconfident and doesn't care about gathering the youth vote for the next provincial election. Relying on old foggeys will only work out for so long before it bites them in the ass.

Lowest tuition in the country, sure, but politically this won't be so nice for them.

For the record Solfadore, the oil sands aren't nearly as polluting as you're led to believe. I mean I clearly have some sort of bias because I'm from Alberta but yeah if you want to make a difference, stop driving your car instead of calling the oil sands dirty money.

I think Harper is doing great.

Well aren't you a special one.
Full of ignorance and fear and shamelessly believing that any other party would destroy the economy *sigh*. It bugs me when people are spinelessly controlled by fear without any decent evidence.

Premier Stelmach raised royalties on oil companies slightly and they all packed up and moved to Saskatchewan

A Liberal or NDP victory would impose far worse than that on Alberta in the name of 'the environment'

So simplistic. "all"? Doubt it. Someone else would do the job. There's so much untapped oil it would be stupid not to. As long as they're above profit margin it's worth it. Which is ALWAYS the truth. You speak economic platitudes as if it were a convincing argument. As I said, too afraid. No one would want to shatter the economy. They're politicians who are grown men (/women) who are almost as selfish and money-centric. They aren't nearly as much of a bunch of hippies as conservative commercials and uninventive speeches made you think. Life isn't so black and white.

Pity you've been convinced it is.

edit: and I don't care about the oil sands, really. I don't HAVE to be entirely on one side of a fence and disagree with everything the other says.

No I've been vaguely aware of things here. A politics board on GFaqs? Sounds strange. Not really into the idea of that either.. problem with talking politics is the natural tendency of the human mind towards forming dichotomies of every possible situation leading to tribal us-or-them bickering. It's why I'm getting into medical and not political / social fields.

And remember: just because I disagree doesn't mean I'll bash you everywhere else at every opportunity. I don't bother with grudges easily :P no fun to only be friends with yes-men.

I really don't see what the problem is. $2800 a semester or whatever is not that expensive and it's what everyone else in Canada already pays.

It's more of a societal choice, really. Obviously, $2800 per semester is not the end of the world, and a good majority of the population will still be able to access university. Herein lies your problem, though. Should it be "a good majority", or "everyone, regardless of funds"? The thing with education is that it's the one tool that really gives everyone a chance at success. Without it, you're pretty much stuck with low-wage jobs unless you have some sort of incredible talent, or an incredible business sense (and even then). With it - provided you're good enough at it, know what you want and how to achieve it - you can aim pretty much anywhere.

So yeah, $2800/semester is not going to really hurt a lot of people. There are, however, some people *right now* that have a very hard time making ends meet (I personnally know a few of them, and they're living very, very soberly to afford education); a 75% hike will pretty much prevent them from achieving university education. A university system that is only available to the most well-of is not a good system. That is, at least, the position of people opposing the hike.

My position is a bit more nuanced - aka I think that 75% is way too much, both as a practical and a symbolic hike (at the end of the day, it's not going to help cut the debt much, so it's mainly an ideological policy designed to gain favour with non-students for the approaching provincial elections). On the other hand, I don't approve of a complete freeze on tuition either. I wish we could settle for some sort of middle ground.

It would be so hard to get even more money just by having our universities be better managed and prevent the higher ups from giving themselves insane boosts on our back.

But then the rich would get less rich so they would'nt be able to pay bribes as big as now.

Quebec's government is so corrupt atm it's not even funny, the people know and yet the only thing they do about it is complain sitting comfortably on their asses. Yeah the students are protesting against something, the tuition fee hikes but I know it's not ONLY that they're protesting against, and it prevents taxpayers from going to work sometimes but goddamn if it's not a good opportunity for everybody's who's fed up with the current system to go in the street and protest too I don't know what it is.

But naaah, middle-class men are waaaay too scared of losing even one day of salary to try to change the future.
