I was simply wondering if you have heard of the situation in Quebec atm regarding tuition fees and the students on strike since February.

I'm asking because I just heard on the news that what we're doing here is inspiring students associations from other provinces to act about the issue, tomorrow there's apparently an association from Ontario who'll hold a conference to give their support to Quebec's students.

So yeah, just wondering if you've heard of it and if it had any consequences in your province.

I'm from Alberta so perhaps predictably I think Quebec students are being their usual whiny selves and probably just putting up a show until Ontario forces Alberta to give them more money to make it all better.

Try actually living in the province that's actually paying the billion dollar yearly bribes to Quebec only to have them call you a redneck anti-gay radical pro-lifer who is so useless that they should just move to Arizona.

Granted most of that applies to people from Ontario as well but this topic is about Quebec.

Quebec's government want to rise tuition fees for Universities by 75% over 5 years, students decided it was way too much and decided to just not go to school, a good 200k+ CEGEP and College student haven't been to school for what, 72 days now? It's a pretty big deal about it, pretty much the only thing on the news.

How high are the taxes in California?

We get a gigantic 15% here just when we frigging buy stuff.

And then we lose like 40% of our salaries if we make as low as 40k bucks a year.

And when people finally dare to complain and do something about it like the students are doing now the older middle-class people find a way to complain about it.

At least if there's something good we can notice from the whole situation it's that it makes people talk to one another.

I keep seeing people talking about it in the buses, people from different sexes, races and ages, everybody has something to say about what's happening and it's nice to see those people actually say those things, even to complete strangers. I see people swapping names and e-mails before leaving the bus in order the keep in touch with someone they had a good time talking with.

Heartwarming really.

Actually from Quebec. >_>

There should really be a middle ground, IMO. I'm not against the idea of a hike, but 75% is way too damn much. On the one hand, one of the student movements protesting the hike is hell-bent on not settling for anything less than a tuition freeze; on the other, the government is trying its damn best to act ******, provoke anger - and then blame the violence it itself encouraged on the students. Can't they settle on a moderate hike or something?

From: Robazoid | #009

FYI, nobody in Quebec's saying Alberta's useless. People might accuse you of the other stuff, but not of being useless. Granted, some of them are stupid about it and criticize everything you do while not realizing that a lot of what we're subsidizing comes from transfer payments.

Personnally, I don't like the Albertan model. I think the Canadian tuition average is way too damn high. Education is one of the most important (if not the most important) tool to make sure everyone at least starts on an equal footing. If you compare with tuition rates in the US, for instance, it's obvious that only the rich or the incredibly smart can afford tuition at the top-rated schools. Is that the model we should be striving for? And besides, I'm not too keen on oil sands, which are incredibly polluting and feel like 'dirty money' to me.

On the other hand, it's incredibly stupid and hypocritical to ***** about it like I do and not recognize that you're funding a lot of what we have through that alleged 'dirty money'. Which is why I'd really wish the government would stop acting stupidly for a change. We have a big deficit: just raise the damn electric bills already! That way, you save money, and the 'drawback' is that people consume less, thus (a) allowing us to sell our reserves to the rest of Canada/the US for a profit, meaning more money and (b) help the environment along.

First, we have to take care of our debt and stop the endemic corruption. Then, we'll be able to criticize Alberta's system without sounding like hypocritical douches.

Government made an announcement today about a '' solution ''.

So instead of a 75% increase over 5 years they suggest a ~80% increase over 7 years.

They didn't say it that way but that's what it is in the end.
