anyways, since 08-09, I've been trying to do a no death run of Metal Slug 3 on XBLA
I did it on Contra so I always wanted to do it here
but man, this game gets tough!
I've been trying on and off for the past couple of years, but this time, ITS SERIOUS
I guess basically I'll be using this topic to write down my progress and vent if I die >_>
I don't expect anybody to care, I just do better when I write down my thoughts and have somewhere to vent
anyways, I just did a run, I didn't die til f***ing stage 5, the final level. I defeated the army, passed the Shoot em up section, and died on the ship
I kept going and ended up using 3 continues on the rest of the game. MAN, I fell apart. what happened?
the kicker is, I got a perfect on the final boss. I've NEVER been able to do that. The secret is the flameshot. that bastard makes short work of him. good god.
now that I know I can perfect the boss, I need to concentrate on the mother ship part.
like I said, I died on the mothership. the Mars people's shots are a bit too unpredictable for me. this has always been my brick wall
the next segment kills me too. the "Critter" section, as I call it. the part where the little 4 legged freaks start showing up and the "Mama" version drops the green slime balls that bounce everywhere
THEN the first alien mutant clone section isn't too hard because they provide a metal slug. I just rip their asses apart
the segment where you free your comrade isn't too hard either, I found that if you just go all the way to the left (below the "Hill") and just jump up and down and shoot, nothing can touch you
but the tricky part is getting enough heavy machine guns from the clones first. thats where you're at risk
then the Alien Mutant Zombie Clone part (I just realized how ridiculous that sounds) is either easy or hard
The puke is ...weird...in some playthroughs, if I duck, it goes over my head (when I'm taking cover, obviously)
but sometimes, it'll kill me anyways
the important part here is, like I said earlier, taking the flame shot and avoiding the other weapons. this becomes hard because theres lots of weapons here , like the drop shot. and waiting for the power ups to disappear gives the Zombie clones alot of time to catch up
I take refuge in the jumping slug, but I can't maintain it for very long. I found that the "Nazi Carrier", as I call it, does come in handy here if the Jumping Slug has taken a hit. three missiles from the Nazi Carrier takes down those brain machines and theres 3 of them, and 10 missiles. I used to always pass this thing up
Destroying the final wall kills all of the Alien Mutant Zombie Clones, so that takes top priority. I try to use up the remaining shots and then try to do a kamikaze with the carrier
after that section, is the final boss
the idea here is to take advantage from the invincible jump you do when you leap from the Metal Slug. when he attacks, jump out and nothing will kill you until you land and become vulnrable again.
what I did was jump out immediately, shoot some Flameshots, when he does the "Shockwave" attack, I jump in, become invincible and not get hurt by it, shoot some missiles from the Slug, and when the puke balls come up, thats when I jump out and shoot him with some more Flameshots and repeat
when you become "Big" and get the heavy machine gun, you can rip apart all of the crab things in the top route
sure, the Jumping Slug is inferior to the Metal Slug when it comes to fighting the boss, but it doesn't matter since you can kill the boss before he pulls out his big canon as long as you spam the bombs

if you mess up, you've given a second chance because you become a zombie
but you're so unbelievably slow as a zombie though, the puking attack has start up lag, and when you BECOME a zombie, the enemies are still inching their way towards you, they'll come up to you and kill you the second you're in control again.
I try to save my grenades in this level, they come in handy for the boss. the aliens are the only hard part of the boss, when you start killing them, the start shooting much more rapidly, it can become undodgable if you're against a wall.
so try to make short work of them with the bombs. the second part is a piece of cake, hardly worth mentioning.
and needless to say, I DON"T go into the ice cave.
you go in, put yourself at risk, and come right out of the entrance.
its not an alternate route, its just a diversion.
I remember when this game came out and people were playing online, EVERYBODY would want to go in.
the third level is when stuff starts getting tough
the underwater segment is easy enough
you keep going until you hit the wall that shoots missiles at your, you can skip this miniboss and go into the opening that in on the bottom!
this takes you to the submarine section, which is REALLY easy. and best of all, theres lots of Grenades down here. the problem is, if you pick them up with your sub, you get torpedoes instead. so you need to jump out of the sub and grab the bombs and then jump back in, it can be risky but its worth it later on
once you're past this segment, you'll be at the part with Security cameras and the drones. its not too hard, but its easy to forget that cameras shoot at you, and the stray bullet can hit you when you least expect it.
then comes the "Elevator gauntlet" as I call it
this is where your stock pile of grenades come in handy. you should have 30-50 of them by now the thing is, the soldiers have gained some stamina at this point. I mean, they still die in one hit, but they continue to stand after they get shot, and they can actually tank several shots before finally collapsing, thus become meat shields for the soldiers behind them. this can be tough because you're usually greeted with 5-10 soldiers at a time, and OTHER soldiers from either the bottom level or the top level start taking pot shots at you, it can be confusing and hard. the solution? just throw grenades! when you get to a new level, as you're running, throw some preemptive grenades, and when the soldiers pop up, they'll run right into it and it'll kill them instantly. even the ones with the shields die instantly. the best part is the explosions of the grenades actually take out the soldiers on the top level!
during the second level, soldiers with bazookas will show up on the bottom level. you have to take these guys out as fast as you can. because if you don't, the soldiers that appear from the left and right sides will keep spawning until you do. so when you run in, throw some grenades, jump, shoot down, and take everyone out with one swoop
the same with the other levels.
once you get to the top, you'll take out a guy in one of the "Nazi Carriers"
you're gonna need this thing for the boss, so try to keep it in tip top shape, shouldn't be too hard cause you'll get some gas containers along the way
while you're progressing, you'll see a POW on an upper catwalk. this guy is useful, he gives you the shotgun. its important that you grab this weapon while in the carrier
the tricky part is avoid any other weapons while carrying the shotgun
once you get to the boss, just unload all of your shotgun shells on him and use the invincible jump when necessary
the fourth level is really tough, at least, in the beginning
you have jets, helicopters, tanks, and loads of men coming after you
and you have the Camel Slug...which leaves you out in the open and you can still die from one hit
theres really not any "Strategy" here, you have to be careful. also, use grenades when you can, no need to save them up this level
after the desert portion, you're given a choice on which route to take
I used to always take the top route cause its quicker
but since I've started playing the game again, I've checked the bottom route out and its ALOT easier, but just alot slower
when you enter, you'll eventually see a crank you have to turn, once you do it, it'll open up ANOTHER path that takes you further down into a slimey area. this part is pretty easy, you just fight worms and crabs for the most part. then eventually you'll find the Drill Tank. This'll murder everything in your path. now the thing you want to do here is get the shotgun power up and try not to get anything else
this'll make short work of the boss
and speaking of which, this boss is really tough
he has 4 attacks red lasers gold lasers exploding wolves and the "Money" beam
Red lasers are easy enough to dodge, you just have to keep moving exploding wolves are the easiest. they move around alot but you can definitely tell when they're about to hit the ground and explode. fortunately the explosion doesn't kill you. If you're on the ground when they make contact (and you're near it) it kills you
but you can just jump straight up and you won't die
and the money beam is the beam that ...well..transforms you into money, its pretty self explanatory on what to do. he starts up the beam on one side of the screen, you just have to run to the other side
the gold lasers are unpredictable and THE hardest things to dodge, especially if hes about to die
I was fighting one of the big critters and a stray critter thing showed up, I was hoping by the it got to me, I would slash it since I was shooting the big ones, but it just blew up instead
I was going after a gas container and apparently there was a bullet blending behind it
and of COURSE it registered the bullet before it registered the health up, so I lost the ship
and then I was shot down afterwards cause I didn't realize what was happening (I thought I was grabbing a health item, I didn't expect the game to tell me to abandon ship!)
or sometimes I just die because the big critters fall on me when I kill them. and usually I'm still under some green orbs when that happens so I can't get out of the way
