I'd mock the UK but I know America is going in the same direction, anyway.

File-sharing site The Pirate Bay must be blocked by UK internet service providers, the High Court has ruled.

Sites like The Pirate Bay destroy jobs in the UK and undermine investment in new British artists," the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) said.

I'm normally against blocking websites and whatnot, but this is a good thing. Or it would be if it would actually work. But hey, it's something.

For the record I was very annoyed when Megaupload got shut down, because that actually has legitimate uses. The Pirate Bay actually advertises itself as being for pirating.

Not technically no.

Not until they decide to ransack a city.

This would just be, like, an annual open-seas pirate expo.

not that it matters because I'd rather have completely backwards censoring (blocking the pirate bay is stupid especially if you don't block all domain names.) than something like SOPA/PIPA/Whatever they want to call it nowadays where they can just do what they please.

Of course I'd rather have no censoring at all but if there has to be I'd rather have it done by stupid people instead of shady ones

The music industry's representatives did say that The Pirate Bay's operators "line their pockets by commercially exploiting music and other creative works without paying a penny to the people who created them". Unfortunately for TPB, this behaviour exploited several patents on exploiting music without paying the creators that were held by the BPI and RIAA.

You seem to have problems understanding basic division of powers in any sane system. This was a court case. What do you want a court to do about an economic issue? Declare it illegal?

I should probably state how I feel about this in more detail, after reading Chris's comment.

I used to pirate movies and music pretty regularly, but after I came home from Ghana after two years I decided it probably wasn't the best thing to do. I only pirate for good now, meaning that I pirate material that I would not pay money for otherwise and is being used for a productive purpose. Coincidentally I am currently downloading some lectures on Forex trading which I am going to watch to try to help me learn how to day-trade. If I were to not have this available I would go to the library and check out some books about it instead, so this just saves me time and costs the producer nothing. On occasions where I find I would in fact have purchased the material. I delete the files and I proceed to purchase it. You could argue about the ethics of my actions, but I think that they are perfectly reasonable in both a utilitarian and Kantian sense.

So I think there is merit in the pirate bay. I think if everyone were to pirate like I do then the world would be better off, but I know that isn't what people do.

Hence why I am kind of Meh, about this.

Why do you mention Kant and Mill specifically? Those aren't the only two types of ethical systems out there. In fact, I'm not even sure this does mesh with Kantian ethics, as it would demand that pirating files you "wouldn't pay for otherwise" be made universalizable.

I obviously could not list every ethical theory, as many ethical theories contradict each other, rather I am citing specific ethical theories which I think I follow in order to avoid the uneducated "no its not" argument.

And I certainly think that only pirating things you wouldn't pay for otherwise would certainly work universalized if people actually stuck to it.

Speaking as an amateur musician aspiring to be a professional musician, I think that artists should be compensated for their works, whether that be music or something else. However, I believe that the exchange of ideas and information should be a relatively free process, and draconian copyright laws only do damage to art and don't help anyone but the executives at the very top of the chain who I have less than zero respect for. Groups like the MPAA and RIAA are several orders of magnitude more loathsome than someone who downloads a few movies off of the internet. So I don't see pirating as good or bad. There's more than one way to view this ethically. People pirating stuff has plenty of positive and negative effects.

But nobody likes to pursue reasonable conversation on this topic, everyone either wants to fall into the "I'm entitled to never pay for anything" crowd or the crowd that believes the first crowd should be thrown in jail for even daring to download a song and both groups can f*** right off.

I'm pretty sure it was.

Anyway I guess I don't have a huge problem with this, but it does make me a bit uneasy in that it probably sets a sort of precedent. If they start taking down sites with legitimate uses just because what they do enables piracy, I'm going to have a problem with that. As someone mentioned earlier, though, this is preferable to something like SOPA.
