how come sometimes I seem to be able to meld skills and sometimes I can't? Does the option only show up if there's a valid combination or something?
also I assume the reason these Disney worlds feel super rushed and like I'm only doing half the story is because I'll see different parts with different characters?

The game is intended to be played Terra > Ventus > Aqua because Ventus's story spoils Terra's and Aqua's spoils both of the other two, while Terra spoils neither.
Skills have preset melds. You can look up a chart to see what gets you what. Some skills only have one combination to meld, other lesser skills have many combinations.

I'm almost certain the game says "hey you can have multiple save files, so feel free to play whoever". Also, if you just wanted to ask that question, the fact that you're playing Aqua is irrelevant.

Oh right. Well you can do that stuff offline, which I did. And it's not difficult by yourself at all. It's a good way to level your skills and whatnot. You also get some good prizes. It's just an arena, like the Coliseum in KH1 and 2.
I'm finding skills are super easy to level, especially if I try out those game board things. I just don't have enough money to keep buying enough copies of the skills to make all the meld recipes I want to try.
also the game was REALLY FREAKING HARD at first. Like the first 2 or 3 screens of enemies I leveled from 1-5. And it's been fairly easy-mode since then. I went with a neutral difficulty since I had some trouble with a couple bosses doing Pride first in KH2 and wanted to take it easy here :3

-Playing Aqua first is the dumbest thing you can do. Ven-Terra-Aqua is the best way to avoid spoilers for the remaining characters, but Terra-Ven-Aqua has the best difficulty curve.

Aqua is really weak at first. But she gets amazingly awesome later on.

Wrong. You can get it on Normal but you have to finish everything in the journal. So it is just a lot easier to play on Proud.

Not really. I found going back and forth through areas populated with a lot of enemies was the best way, and more fun.

Oh well yeah, in that case it's pretty damn terrible. But it's nowhere near bad in Kingdom Hearts.
wow Ventus and Terra were just total dicks to Aqua. She's just looking out for them as a friend and doing what their boss said and Ventus is all "Now that you're a master you're letting it get to your head"

This is why youtube exists. Developers should stop putting in crap like this.
Nothing wrong about it. They tell you straight up when you start the game, so it's not something you discover to your frustration after beating the game on Normal, unless you just completely ignore the information like TC.
Besides, playing a KH game on Normal is just something you don't do. It's just a tiny step up from Bayonetta's one button mode and means you'll get nothing out of the gameplay.
well your best bet is to play Original Generation 1 and 2 for GBA first so you get a great handle on the mechanics. Then you can either play one of the older, but translated, ones (Alpha Gaiden for PSX or J for GBA) or try your hand at a Japanese one like the Z series (PS2 then PSP)

one plus is that Alpha (PSX) has the same original plot, basically, as OG1. It just adds some Gundam and Gunbuster and other stuff to it. So if you do go to Alpha Gaiden next you'll have the gist of what's already occurred!

Damn right we do. I'm so badass, even though I played on Critical Mode I had to switch on the No EXP ability for the game to pose a challenge. But enough about me. We can't all have 15-inch e-penii.
Switch to a different character now before you get everything spoiled for the other two characters. We're not ALL telling you to play Aqua last for no reason.
