The part I find odd about the article is the idea that the 3DS's launch only appealed to the hardcore. I'm pretty sure the 3DS's problem was that it didn't appeal to anyone. It took an entire year for them to release a truly stellar title for the console that was not a port.

Hey now, some of the system's best game came out in the holidays last year. In fact the first year, when looked at in its complete form, is one of the best on any system. The problem was the first few months. Coupled with other issues, of course, such as confusion with the DS and changes in the market meaning that you need to come out with more, quickly.

But an entire year? It didn't take that long.

I would also argue that they did focus on the hardcore in the launch window, relatively speaking.

Please explain this to me, because I really don't understand it. How do a couple N64 upgrades and Super Mario 3D Land appeal to the "hardcore"? And how is the 3DS software anything other than extremely lackluster?

3DS is still lacking in notable games, outside of a select few. They're right about the Wii--too much focus on casual games without similar support for 'core' games.

Talking about the launch window there. Besides, the 3DS's library is great for just one year on the market. I don't want to get into listing all the games because that's not what this topic is about.

But the 3DS launch was mainly comprised of games that wouldn't appeal to wider audiences, like 2D fighters and a Pilotwings revival. The only launch window game that could really appeal to the casual crowd was Nintendogs + cats, which surprise surprise, was by far the most successful. By the way, if you'd read my point, you would have realised that those N64 remakes and 3D land have nothing to do with my post.

And bear in mind that I said relatively speaking.

Nintendo making the classic mistake; thinking it's all about width.
