It happened a few times during Melee I think, the game suddenly cut out. But it was a very rare occurrence.

huh. more yes than I expected. maybe I should buy a new one just in case! new Wiis don't play GC games anymore and if my GC bites the dust my friends and I are gonna be lacking a SSBM machine. new GCs are more expensive than they were a year ago, though. they bottomed out at $80, now they're more than that at most places.
