Pretty much all of Nintendo agrees (and they're not shy about it) that the 3DS launch was a disaster, so it's not like this is breaking news.

Miyamoto carries himself well in interviews, better than people who makes headlines about him! He praised Vita's hardware, but said it lacks compelling software. I'm sure he understands well after the 3DS launch!

I mean the PSP pretty much had no big system sellers until like, 2009. Long after the system was on life support because most western developers and retailers pulled their support like a year or year and a half after it was released.

The vibe I get from the Vita is that not only have they not learned from their mistakes but also they made a bunch of new ones.

The game issue with Vita right now is that it lacks a Mario, a big game from a popular series that makes people want to purchase the system. It has a good lineup of unique games, but those never sell systems. It needs something like MGS, something to make people want the system.

It would help to bundle memory cards, as well.

price is the game. 3ds sold like hot cakes even BEFORE the Mario duo came out due to the drop. if they want to appeal with software they're gonna need a looot more than just mgs.

I don't know how much a memory card bundle would help. Maybe it'd sell a few extra copies to enthusiasts, but the Vita lacks any appealing title. As cool as the Gravity Rush demo is, that game is not it.

Sony should seriously think about a 3G contract-subsidized Vita. That might get it over the hump while developers ready the next wave of games.

A price drop isn't going to happen, I don't think. A $199 Vita would sell much more than it is now, but Sony is much more willing to ride these things out. It isn't as crucial to their business as Nintendo, it isn't the core that everything revolves around. That doesn't mean they don't care, but I don't think they'll react like Nintendo did.

They need E3 to announce some big games. Gravity Daze, MGS HD Collection, Sound Shapes, Persona 4 Golden, and Max Technika are some cool 'smaller' games coming out this year in the US, but none of them are what MGS4 was to the PS3. I think getting a few big name exclusives--not on the 3DS, not on consoles--is what it needs. Putting memory into the package just makes the $250 more of a solid price, no extra purchase needed.

Wipeout's load times are gross! Have they fixed it yet? The game is probably great (it's Wipeout, after all) but if it's plagued with problems, it's probably best to stick with the PS3 version.

But yeah, I think the Vita has good games already, more and better ones than the 3DS had, but it lacks a big game that makes people comfortable with $250. That's what they need at E3.

Only tried a display model, but the analogs felt worse than the 3DS slide pad. Vita has some games that look good, but none I really want enough to buy a Vita before a price drop or new model.

i.... wouldn't be so quick to say that the vita has "more and better." let's not forget that the Vita launched in December over in Japan, Feb over here. if you take the former you're looking at 5 months into its life - and 5 months into the DS' life would be Septmeber 2011, where it already was starting to hit its stride as it murdered from month 5 to 9. reason for using Japan as a more logical base comes from the person who said this in the first place - i'd expect Shiggy to be much more familiar with how the system's games are over there than over here. Vita... honestly loses that battle. it's not that the 3DS was particularly STRONG for the first 4 months, but between the price drop + the quickly improving library it wasn't BAD as far as launch systems go. and before it finished 9 months it pretty much became one of the best first years a system had - and that was before Kid Icarus.

if you go by the US release then by that point the 3DS did have SSF4, Ghost Recon, OoT (June release - 3 months), DoA, Monkey Ball, and one or two more. yeah, nothing really standout in that grouping save the N64 upgraded port, but that's also a problem the Vita has right now, with similar level games for the smaller titles too; it doesn't help that a lot of the games are either ports or games that might as well be ports because the dev took on the "handheld entry" route, similar to how the PSP went (see: R&C, AC, GoW) with a lot of its titles. stuff like Ace Combat X for the PSP was a rarity in that the handheld entry was every bit as good as the console one.


i do agree sony won't be dropping the price, and a memory card bundle would be a start, but that just resembles the way the PSP went: weak start, a barren middle, a fantastic end of its life that actually EXTENDED the system by two years. and sony will most certainly be happy if the Vita turns out to be as successful as the PSP was. just that you can expect a lot of the same criticisms as well as the same problems.

I was talking about the US dates for both. The quantity and quality is much better than the 3DS this far in, but again, it still lacks a big name game like the 3DS did. Vita won't sell as much as the PSP did, and it'll likely see more success in Western markets versus Japan, the reverse of the 3DS, but it shouldn't take 'years' for it to be a good platform.
