Now don't get me wrong, there are certainly games where 100%ing it is very appealing. The DKC games immediately come to mind, as does SMW (Unless you count getting all 5 Dragon Coins in every stage as 100%ing it). I just feel like in most games, trying to find everything often comes off as really tedious and boring. And there's really not much to gain from it. In games where you collect a bunch of stuff (Like the blast shards in inFamous), it's not like the majority of the blast shards are in interesting places that are a challenge to get. It's just...search the open world and find things. I dunno, that's not fun to me. Games where I feel urged to complete it are where I get a reward for doing so or it's genuinely interesting to try and find the things I'm collecting. Arkham Asylum/City did this very well and so did Outland. Punch-Out!! on Wii had a pretty great idea, but it ended up being waay too hard for me.

I'm not really much of an Achievement person either, especially since a lot of Achievements are kind of trivial, like "Beat the game on normal! Now beat the game on Hard!" or "Run a total of 100 miles in-game!" or something. It really feels like it's prolonging the game in an uninteresting way. A game where I felt Achievements were done very well in was Mega Man 10, where the challenges were actually really difficult and there was a sort of accomplishment in getting those achievements.

So why exactly do you completionists enjoy completing a game?

I went through a period of time where I felt the need to 100% FF7-10 and Tactics. never happened of course because 100%ing any one of them is ridiculous and time-wasting. I think it's appealing to people with OCD tendencies. lord knows I got all the trophies in SSBM even though there was no good reason to.

when you like something (in this case a video game)
you tend to want to be around that thing more
and when you're around a video game a lot, you tend to do things you havent done before
and if you play that video game enough, sooner or later you're going to do everything

y'know?

In inFamous's blast shards case I just couldn't stand being 1 measly trophy away from a plat, and it's one that's sooo easy though time consuming and tediously boring. If platinum trophies never existed I wouldn't have done it =/

oddly enough though I don't give a rat's ass about getting 1000/1000 achievements.... there's just something about a platinum trophy that I just can't resist~

The only games I've ever 100%ed are Vice City and Red Dead Redemption.

I've attempted a bunch others, but obviously I didn't care enough about those games to finish it.

I can't speak for everyone but when I was little, we were pretty poor. I think my dad legit got an NES in the late 80s but one of his coworkers actually gave us their SNES. but we couldn't really afford a library to support either of them

so the games we DID have, we would play to death. and to keep the game fresh and exciting, we would do EVERYTHING the game had to offer, we searched every nook and cranny for secrets and tried doing everything possible cause, well, its all we had and for all we knew, we weren't getting any other games and we had to make the best of it.

getting a perfect game in Kirby's Adventure and unlocking the sound test was one of the greatest achievements I've ever pulled in my young days. I had no idea that was in there and felt so accomplished that the game acknowledged it too! I was on top of the world when I got so good in Killer Instinct to where I beat the game, on the hardest difficulty, without losing a round, and thus unlocking the CODE FOR EYEDOL (Which was a schoolyard rumor at the time! and I didn't read Nintendo Power or guides or anything like that yet). It was a self challenge I put on myself and surprisingly the game REWARDED me for it!

these among other things

so naturally this is a trait I kept on as I grew older. every game I got, I had to appreciate and honor everything it had to offer. not to mention, I still don't have too much money, so these games have to last me!

and yea, I'm on the same page as you on Achievements, that crap is stupid as s*** and not necessary for 100% completion. and achievement whores are typically among the worst gamers out there, especially online.

100%-ing a game can be appealing. If you don't see the appeal in catching every Pokémon, or unlocking the final super secret level in Super Mario Galaxy 2, you probably lack some gamer genes.

The kind of people who try to collect 99 of every item in Final Fantasy games however... now those people need a smack in the face and a job.

honestly, i never felt compelled to 100% a game until trophies came around.

it feels nice to have some kind of validation for wasting hundreds of hours on one game

The appeal of these two things is vastly different.

Depends on the game. I loved 100%-ing games like the Super Mario Galaxies, Super Meat Boy, etc, because every little bit of completion is a challenge in itself. But collecting all the random crap everywhere in Assassin's Creed is so friggin' boring and nets you nothing but an achievement.

Agreed here. I never had any intentions of 100% GTA games on PS2, for example. All the side missions like from the police car and fire truck, etc, and all the packages and whatnot. But if I had played that on the PS3, and the platinum was something I could reasonably obtain, and that was one of the trophies, I'd probably go for it.

There still has to of course be enough interest in continuing to play the game. I like collecting trophies and especially going after platinums, but only if the game is good enough to continue playing after beating it, and if the platinum is reasonable to obtain. I wouldn't call myself a trophy whore. But the platinum trophy (and sometimes just individual trophies) is a reward for doing things, and a sort of badge of honor, and I like working towards those goals and getting that sense of accomplishment when I achieve it.

This, and also for all PS3 trophies the little sound it plays when they unlock is so satisfying!
