I liked the fun atmosphere of the movie but to me it felt a little TOO fun. It went out of its way to make sure that every moment of tension was immediately softened by a joke. Even the most serious moment (Coulson dying) was followed with his joke about what the gun does. It never felt like there was a serious threat at all because everyone was so flippant during the whole thing. I had other problems too but that was definitely the biggest for me.
It sounds like you just expected the wrong thing. The Nolan Batman films are gritty, realistic films. The Avengers was more of a classic comic book style with colorful, larger than life heroes. Serious was not really the way to go with this one, and it wouldn't have made any sense given the established films in the franchise already. In fact, some actual serious scenes were cut from the movie because they didn't fit, even though they weren't bad scenes on their own.
The one scene I really wish they had changed around a little bit was Hulk smashing the **** out of Loki. They could have kept it as him relentlessly beating him around but made it a bit less cartoony and still have been able to fit the "Puny God" line in easily. I guess I wanted more of a "hulk is awesome" feeling from that scene and less of a "hahaha" feeling.
From: Mr_Vaga | #007 I somewhat agree, though most of it was okay.

What, that was like the best moment of the entire movie. And how did that not convey a "Hulk is awesome" feeling? Not that he even needed another one after he took out that flying thing in one punch oh god was that sick.
