It seems like any time it's ever come up in my life "O" has been yes and "X" was no. It's probably been all games, too, but I don't recall ever seeing the "American" version

early on games like FF7 still keep the O as yes, X as no scheme, but it definitely felt like over time the opposite was adopted for american games.

They changed the programming for US releases.

I heard that when you're in Japan prowling around to get laid, girls put up the "X" sign with their arms which is a shorthand way of saying "no I will not f*** you"

I think it has more to do with placement, the bottom center button is a more natural place for "confirm" and somewhere to the side is more natural for "cancel", the shapes are whatever because who the **** actually looks at the controller constantly while playing anyway
