Triangle was a head/viewpoint for looking around.

Square was a piece of paper designed to be used for menus.

Circle and X were designed to represent "yes" and "no".

In Japan, O is usually confirm and X is cancel, but it's reversed for America, for whatever the reason, if I'm not misremembering.

How is triangle a head? Is it like that pyramid with an eye on it?

Which is why every damn playthrough of any MGS confuses the hell out of me.

This is pretty smart whether it's actually what they originally intended or not.

Also I can't believe people didn't know O and X are reversed in Japan. I figured most people had heard about at least because of Metal Gear.

It seems like any time it's ever come up in my life "O" has been yes and "X" was no. It's probably been all games, too, but I don't recall ever seeing the "American" version

early on games like FF7 still keep the O as yes, X as no scheme, but it definitely felt like over time the opposite was adopted for american games.

They changed the programming for US releases.

They did the same for DQVIII when it came out. Completely botched it too, IMHO.

Not sure why Circle isn't confirm in the US.

X just feels like when someone crosses off your answer as wrong in a test.

I heard that when you're in Japan prowling around to get laid, girls put up the "X" sign with their arms which is a shorthand way of saying "no I will not f*** you"

so I believe this

I think it has more to do with placement, the bottom center button is a more natural place for "confirm" and somewhere to the side is more natural for "cancel", the shapes are whatever because who the **** actually looks at the controller constantly while playing anyway
