Probably won't be coming over here for a while, but for those who are interested- yes, it's by far the best game in the series.

Maybe I'll get it. I've been meaning to give the Fire Emblem series a try. I'm a huge fan of Roy.

If you want to give it a try, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance is great. I'm still doubting the 3DS one is really the best in the series though.

How in the world are people playing that game already?

Imported or live in Japan.

Imported. Pricy, but worth it.

By the way, for the masochists in the audience, this game is crazy difficult. Normal mode (which the lowest difficulty, effectively making it Easy mode) is on par with FE8 HM, and I died a number of times. Hard mode is about the same as FE10 Hard, making it doable but extremely tough. Lunatic mode is just stupid, in the best way possible. Your Jeigan is getting three-rounded by basic grunts, no one else can survive more than one (maybe two) attacks, Double system abuse is absolutely essential, unlucky crits all over the place... it's a literal hell.

And apparently, when you beat Lunatic, you unlock Lunatic+. I honestly cannot imagine what the **** that looks like <_<

So have you got a Japanese 3DS, or has the region locking been defeated?

I wonder if it's like Shadow Dragon's 5-star hard mode!

It sure was "fun" bottlenecking against enemies who 2-shot any of your units and praying you didn't critical them.

Lunatic+ may be similar to the previous game's "lunatic reverse" mode, where a player initiating combat gets attacked first no matter what.

... I've gotta say, using FE8 as a difficulty comparison just... doesn't work for me. Even if it IS hard mode.

Yeah lol, FE8 hard mode is still silly easy. It has maybe 1-2 maps that could even be considered slightly challenging, and that's even only in Ephraim's path.

So have you got a Japanese 3DS, or has the region locking been defeated?

Unfortunately, Nintendo decided to stop making their handhelds region-free with the 3DS, so I had to fork over the cash for a Japanese one. I wouldn't recommend this for just one game, but if there are other titles that might end up being Japan-only (like Project X Zone, which I'll also be getting), then it may be a good idea to import.

Lunatic+ may be similar to the previous game's "lunatic reverse" mode, where a player initiating combat gets attacked first no matter what.

I'm pretty sure this would make the early chapters literally impossible to beat. Not even exaggerating.

And according to the FE:A message board, Lunatic+ isn't like Reverse Lunatic. Instead, it has higher enemy stats than in Lunatic (LOL!) and gives many enemies ridiculous, enemy-exclusive skills. Looking forward to it.

... I've gotta say, using FE8 as a difficulty comparison just... doesn't work for me. Even if it IS hard mode.

That's understandable! Especially given how FE8 has infinite grinding available. A better analogy might be FE8 HM with no tower abuse and a significantly handicapped Seth... or, moving away from FE8, somewhere between FE7's Eliwood HM and Hector HM.

Despite the accolades, I'm a bit wary of this game. From the sounds of it I'm going to have no choice but to grind a lot and rely on skills, which kinda takes away some of the actual strategy.

Okay, now this is just silly. FE8 isn't my favorite FE game by any stretch, but it was my first, and even Normal Mode gave me trouble the first time around. HM is tough, especially with no tower use.

And like I said, if you find FE8 very easy for whatever reason (maybe I'm just bad at it!), then the comparison with a slightly-harder EHM works too.

Despite the accolades, I'm a bit wary of this game. From the sounds of it I'm going to have no choice but to grind a lot and rely on skills, which kinda takes away some of the actual strategy.

Depends on what you mean by "grind." I can tell you that no grinding is required for Normal / Hard mode, and even if it is required for Lunatic, grinding in FE13 doesn't work like it does in FE8. After completing a chapter, all uncompleted skirmish maps are erased and replaced with a new set; in other words, there are only so many optional skirmishes in a given playthrough.

Then there's the generation system, which opens up a number of Gaiden chapters which can be good for experience gains. That's added incentive to build unit supports, especially in the higher difficulties.

Oh, and the game throws very few prepromotes at you, likely because the Double system makes leveling up weaker units easier. But be wary.

Ghost ship is probably the only real challenge imo. That one spider level early on where they eat the villagers too, I suppose.

I usually just send Vanessa over to kill the spider (with 2 vulneraries and an antitoxin) and turtle at the bottom of the map with everyone else. Pretty easy!

Probably harder if you're speed running, but I don't really like speed running.

The only ones I find difficult are Ghost Ship and the one in Ephraim's route where you assault that castle and start on two sides with a bunch of locked doors. Mostly because getting to the rogue (...whats his name?) in time without getting berserk staffed is tricky.

There's also Father & Son, as well as most of Ephraim's route (including Phantom Ship, certainly). Late game would be very challenging, but the game throws so many ridiculous, 3x attack weapons at you that it's sort of trivialized.
