Sure it was slightly easier but only if you take advantage of the OPTIONAL stuff

I like the characters overall a bit more and the branching promotion classes

No, it's just plain easier. I've never once grinded on anything, and played it like a regular FE game on hard mode, no restarts allowed. It's the only game where I've never lost anyone doing that. It's just really, really easy.

That's not to say I dislike it, though. I don't, I think it's a good game. But it's really easy.

I do like some aspects of 8, especially in gameplay. But 7 felt a lot more...complete? I dunno how to say it.

That's what I assumed. But for those wondering why I made this topic: part of the reason was that a number of people over at the Awakening board have the strange belief that the reception between the two games is "comparable." I just wanted to see whether this theory held, and it looks like it won't.

I mean, I'm rather fond of 8. But it's pretty much inferior in most every way.

Definitely true. But I consider this community, one not particularly dedicated to Fire Emblem, as a good place to get a fairly random sample that corresponds to how gamers generally feel. We've already considered other areas of the FE community in the topic, so don't worry, I'm not trying to stack the deck.

Aside from Shadow Dragon, 8's more or less definitively the least well accepted one in english. It's not all that bad, but it's definitely way behind 7, 9, and 10.

I've ended up playing 8 more than 7 so I guess I like 8 more.

Getting stuck with Eliwood as a Lord annoys me to no end and Hector is way too good.

Problem with that approach is that 7 is simply much more widely known, so results in a community that isn't dedicated to Fire Emblem will always skew heavily in its favour due to exposure (especially if the comparison is to a Japan-only game).

Don't get me wrong, I agree that 7 is the more popular game by a long shot, all my experience points to that, but it's not really something you'll be able to conclusively prove.

I like the characters a little more, I like that there's more optional stuff to do, and I really like the branching promotions, which gives the game a lot more replay value since you can take totally different paths with the same characters.

It's easier, sure, but FE7's hard mode isn't really my gig so much. I like FE8's challenge more. The pirate ship level in FE8 still kicks my ass on hard mode anyway.

I much prefer the characters in 8, so that's my vote.

7 v. 8 is always an odd poll. 8 is nowhere near as bad as some make it out to be, but I still feel it's the inferior game. I don't care about it being easier, I just think that its maps, units, and story aren't as enjoyable. 7 does have issues though; its main issue for me is just that a lot of the units and secret maps are way too difficult to figure out. I mean, get the f***ing Bard to level 7 in Lyn mode? Somehow get lucky enough to kill the guy with massive evade in one turn? Send random fighter from the start of the game into the arena in a random late-game chapter? FE8 of course takes the exact opposite approach to this and just removes almost every secret map, except for an admittedly bad-ass one. Honestly, I'd probably give the nod to FE8 if Hector mode didn't exist. That's where a lot of my favorite maps are, and I love Hector and Matthew.

Personally I think 8 isn't nearly as good. It's not just because it's easier, I don't think the ruins/tower compensate for the little number of chapters. Characters and plot are IMO weaker (with few exceptions) and some stuff feels rushed (Seriously, reusing the male generic assassin sprite for Marisa?)

^I would personally consider character development the biggest difference between FE7 and 8. Even for a series known for good development, 7's cast feels especially fleshed-out. FE8, even while having a smaller cast, feels a great deal weaker; what can you tell me defines the personalities of Kyle? or Moulder? or Tethys? Not to mention that the villains aren't nearly as good (except Lyon, who's one of the best characters in the series!).

Calling 8 "slightly" easier than 7 is the understatement of the year. Pretty sure 8's hard mode is easier than 7's Eli normal mode.

It's not that 7's difficulty is the only sell for me. I'm just saying.
