I've got a question about internet lingo for you. How likely are Japanese people to understand online game shorthand, or online emoticons typed on a western keyboard?

I play a lot of Japanese guys at night in various Street Fighter games. After a match I thought was cool I'll type "gg :D" but I'm wondering if that even makes sense to them. Is that a universal thing? I know in Warcraft and Starcraft a couple things like "gl hf gg wp" are all standard across various languages and countries but I have no idea with anything else.

I'd usually go with "gg wp" but if I have some skepticism about whether gg is universal, wp would sketchy even moreso
