Board 8 > Anyone who's got ArmA 2 interested in trying out this DayZ zombie mod?

DayZ is a mod for the game ArmA 2. Never heard of either before today, but after checking out some vids of it, I really want to get it.



You spawn randomly on this huge map with very little resources and then do whatever you want. Head into town and gather supplies, roam the countryside, team up with other survivors or gun them down and steal their stuff. If you die, it's permadeath and you have to make a new character from scratch.

This video series gives a pretty good idea of what the experience is like when you team up with others and it looks hella fun.




Mod is still in alpha, so it's very rough and the zombies all share a stock animation and scream which kinda kills the immersion, but the feeling of being completely open and exposed and vulnerable looks awesome.

I've been watching people stream this for a couple days and it looks incredible.

Unfortunately I'm not going to spend the 20 dollars for ArmA 2 :(

Well, it's currently £24.99 for ArmA 2 and ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead, which are the two games you need to play it, so it's very tempting...

I watched The Days Ahead before, it makes this mod look incredible I really want to try it but for $30 I don't know.

Ahaha, this is awesome. I spent about fourty minutes skulking around in the woods, killed a boar then headed into a little town. Scouted it out a little after I heard some gunshots, then killed a few zombies, but then got overrun. Took them out, but lost so much blood everything kept going blurry and I kept passing out. Ran into a bandit whilst clumsily running from some other zombies who asked if I needed any meds, but didn't have any blood so wished me well.

Then I ran into a couple of zombies who slaughtered me 'cause I couldn't aim straight in my anemic stupor.

So, next playthrough, gotta find some blood.

Where did you buy the game? On Steam for me, it looks like I'd have to pay 40 dollars and that's a little steep.

I would like to say I had a day filled with hilarious zombie-related escapades, but instead, despite finish work at 2pm and it now being 1:30am, I haven't been able to play a single game.

What I have been doing is forwarding ports, un-installing and re-installing various elements of the game and the game itself, turning off my firewalls, updating everything, refreshing my cache, turning off my router protecting, enabling UPnP, running a cable through my room so I could plug directly into my router and getting very frustrated because I can't connect to any server and when I do, I get immediately get disconnected.

Isn't PC gaming fun? To think I could have spent my day doing something productive like actually playing a game.

Stories like is why i'm thinking of waiting until the mod is out of alpha to really try it. By then at least the steam summer sale would have past, and ArmA always gets a daily deal during that.

I've got it working consistently now. Did a whole bunch of stuff, so dunno what was causing the problem, but I think it was my McAfee firewall being a douche.

Still fun. The newest patch has improved the zombie moans and added a temperature gauge, so you gotta find shelter when it rains. Also made the nights a little lighter, so you can see without a torch or flare, but they help.
