I still like The Office. It has its moments. The only character that needs to go is Robert California because he's been funny like.. once. I'm sure it'll find its way a bit more in its second season without Carell.

I got into P&R about midway through 3, and Season 4 has been pretty great. The election storyline was great and it really changed things up and made it fresh (from the bits and pieces I had seen of season 1-3).

spoilers
Robert California is not coming back. He was a one season deal.
end spoilers

The Office had some hits this season, but a majority of misses. I hope they look at some of the feedback from this season and try and make the episodes more like the "hits", and less like the misses.

I completely agree. I actually though if you ignore California, this season was probably better than the last couple.

The order for Parks & Recreation as widely rumored ... was for only 13 episodes.

<_<

EDIT: And The Office should use this last season to wrap the story up. They set it up pretty well last season for a conclusion.

They have something stupid like 12 new sitcoms they're going to push out this fall.

Eventually they will premiere on Thursdays, so NBC would either have to outright cancel some of their Thursday block or do shortened seasons.

Just thank god they chose shortened seasons.

P&R's 13 episode renewal in particular gives me the impression that NBC is trying to make sure they both the money and schedule for everything, and covering their asses in advance to not look as ridiculous if they pull an "indefinite hiatus" situation again.

I think it's really weird that NBC is giving Whitney the superstar treatment. That show was easily the most advertised new sitcom last fall, it got the best lead-in the network could offer, it was one of the first shows to get a full-season pickup... and even though its ratings have stayed weak, even after all that, it's getting a second season.

There's something going on behind the scenes, man. That's the only explanation I can think of. For pete's sake, it's not even critically acclaimed. >_>

The Office needs another Season at the most.

Spoilers from newest episode

The Andy-David Wallace thing looked promising but basically was just a giant reset button to remove the entire Sabre thing. Just now there's Gabe (worst character of any show ever) and the british lady or whatever she is (also bad). Was hoping they were working towards some end-game type setup but oh well.

However, when I think about, Whitney really hasn't exactly been getting the superstar treatment as of this Spring. They've stopped the incessant advertising of it, and even in the Superbowl ad they got less screentime than any of the veteran shows.

From a ratings perspective, there was really no surprise about it getting renewed, no more than it would have been surprising if it got cancelled. It really made sense either way. I'm just surprised they kept it after the amount of renewals and pickups already.

From: FartAstronaut69 | #031

Have to agree. I can't speak for how it was after, but the pilot was one of the worst attempts at a sitcom I've ever seen in my life. The jokes weren't funny, the actors had no screen presence, and the timing of the punchlines was incredibly awkward.

As someone who realizes that judging shows based on pilots exclusively is pretty dumb (because it is, and in a topic about Parks and Rec of all things, you'd think people would have figured that out), I watched Whitney for a few weeks, and it got better, to the point where I'm genuinely happy that it got renewed.

Anyone who has watched half an episode of a TV show is about as qualified to judge said TV show as someone who has watched 8 minutes of a movie at the very beginning is allowed to judge said movie.

Yeah, that's an important distinction that I will agree with. Whitney was bland bad and not fascinatingly bad, which is far worse to me. I'll take something like The Room over a bad sitcom any day, though.

thats because whitney is one of the few sitcoms that NBC has is more aimed toward the female demographic.

Women watch more and more tv then men, cable and network. There is a reason why the two most popular new shows last fall were Two Broke Girls and New Girl.

NBC knows this, and they are trying to get that female viewership. They think Whitney gives them a better chance for getting the female viewers.

I'm pretty sure that's only significantly true of reality television. But regardless, the importance of ratings are reliant on how hard it is to reach a target audience, not how many of that target audience actually watches. That's why the 18-49 ratings are the ones everyone primarily uses. People 50+ don't even matter to advertisers in prime time. It's not that people 50+ don't buy anything, it's just generally thought they can be reached with anything. That's why Harry's Law won't get renewed when it brings in 12+ million viewers.

Argue against the logic of this process all you want, but that's the way it is.

you are right that reality tv is a big factor, but women watch more dramas too. I think networks are trying to make sitcoms more female friendly (ie, shows like whitney and two broke girls) since they know how much women watch tv as a whole. Its an untapped market for sitcoms.
