That whole thing was resolved pretty quietly, even though we heard about it like forever ago.

"As part of this agreement, we're going to be changing the name of Blizzard DOTA to Blizzard All-Stars, which ultimately better reflects the design of our game. We look forward to going into more detail on that at a later date."

I actually really like this change.

It's not like they're a stickler for their licenses.

Gary's mod for example.

People panicked for no reason.

I'm really losing a ton of respect for Valve for this. They're honestly saying that their DotA is the sole next-generation game from DotA when it's become more of a genre than anything else. That's a lot slimier than I'd have expected from them.

A company doing something that they think will result in the most possible money for them.

Shocking.

iirc it was LoL that came up with the MOBA tag as a way to not be called a "dota clone". Eventually I think it will be even more common knowledge what the MOBA genre consists of which will mean the distinction between "dota" and "not-dota" will mean even less.

On this very board not a week ago, someone made a topic called 'if you've never played a Dota-like game...'

If he'd made it 'If you've never played a MOBA-like game' roughly 60% less people would've known what he meant. That name might catch on eventually, but for now in the minds of people who barely care about the distinction, they say 'Let's play some DOTA" and then fire up LoL or something. My friends even do this.

It was but it's a good way to classify the genre and should be more widely accepted at some point. DotA is the name of a game that'd be like calling platformers Mario

Mega Man 2 is my favorite Mario game imhhhho

I've never heard of anyone doing this. Everyone I know who plays LoL just says "Let's play LoL". >_>

DotA DEFINED the genre though.

Don't get me wrong, played AoS on starcraft back in the day as well, but DotA was what defined that type of game and it was the version of it that became mainstream. It isn't the name of the genre but the idea that these new games were "dota games" was prevalent for some time.

Even now if I'm trying to get someone to play LoL or just explain the game to them I am very likely to ask them "well, have you ever played DotA?" instead of "it's a MOBA" and expect them to know what a MOBA is. Those of us who follow the scene closely understand, but I'm sure the vast multitudes are much less clear on the distinction.

Yes, This^^

What? Hell no. When people say DotA they mean usually mean DotA 2. What kind of awful person says "time to play DotA' and then launches LoL? They would say "Time to play LoL".

The genre itself isn't big enough that it really needs a genre specifier yet is the thing. You could almost as easily just DotA, HoN, or LoL. Because that's all there is.

Hence the genre "MOBA" doesn't really have much use. But I'm just saying that's the name of the genre. Sure saying "lol-like" or "DotA-like" is easier to understand because it's a 3 game genre, but yeah, copyrighting the name of a game that you intend to make entries for is uh... very reasonable.

Also not that it's necessarily relevant here but "B8 said it" is never evidence that something is correct or accepted.

Right, I look forwards to when saying "XXX is a new MOBA that's coming out" will be the commonplace phrase since it is technically the correct way to do so now.

As an outsider to most of the genre, Blizzard All-Stars is a much better name than Blizzard Dota.

Makes it sound like Blizzard's version of Smash Bros, which seems much easier to market.

"Hey, let's go play some Half-Life 2"

*launches CoD4*

Sure, DotA might be the most well known game of the genre (Well, it's starting to become even with LoL/HoN, really), but it's still THE NAME OF THE GAME. They have every right to trademark DotA.

It's almost like you guys don't have family members who still say 'oh are you playing Mario' when they see you on the computer playing an obvious FPS.

The only reason they say stuff like that is because they're ignorant about gaming, really.

People that are actively playing the games don't say that they're gonna launch one game and then launch an entirely different one.

The only person who might do that would be a grandparent. But my grandmother actually played mario with some regularity for something like a decade (it was the only game she liked) and so I doubt even she would make that mistake.

The only common thing as far as I know is people saying "nintendo" to mean every form of video games.

no one gets upset that Nintendo owns a copyright on "Mario" or "Nintendo"

and my family called my Sega Genesis "Nintendo" for years!
