Anything in between has to be specified in relation to something, like "English isn't hard compared to *insert other language here*".

Which is kind of a superlative in a sense. lefty didn't specify what language he thought was harder than English, but he wasn't necessarily implying that English was easy. He was implying that at least one other language is harder.

When you're not using some sort of superlative, then yes, a negative form would mean the opposite.

Not hard = Easy
Not harder or not the hardest =/= Easy

Not necessarily anyway. They can mean "easy" if you're being sarcastic or something of the sort.

HeroicGammaRay has stolen my Mahjong superpower of starting with excellent hands. In a potentially related note, my superpower to always play aggressively and never feed is also gone. It remains to be seen who took this.
