your reasons are probably vastly different and he'd still take issues with them, however.

Unlike virtually every other adaptation of Elmore Leonard's work, the writers of this show have an exceptional grasp of his voice as an author; it draws from the region in which it is set, it's pithy, but also direct. The direction and cinematography aren't often flashy, but they are very effective. I love Mad Men and Breaking Bad (the latter of which definitely shares some DNA with Justified), but Matthew Weiner and Vince Gilligan can occasionally be rightfully accused of being a little overly showy.

It also draws well and liberally from one of the undeniably great TV shows of the last 15 years, the aforementioned Deadwood. The casting for the show features a plethora of Deadwood alumni (as well as a few Lost alumni), but never simply because they were on that show. Virtually every character (with one exception, Rachel) is well-used and well-suited to be played by the actor or actress playing them. Dickie and Mags Bennett could probably not be played by anyone other than Jeremy Davies and Margo Martindale, respectively. The fact that many of these actors have turned in career best performances is a testament to both the casting and the writing, I think.

The thing that really works for Justified, though, is that when it steps back from the intricately woven and exceptionally crafted serialization, it is still a remarkably well-crafted procedural. An episode like "Thick As Mud", where Dewey races to get money to the crazed nurse who took his kidneys, can be as magnificent in its own way as a piece-moving powerhouse like "Brother's Keeper".

Never will I describe anything so wordily in my life, but sure that sounds about right.
