Part of me is afraid they don't actually get why people were tiffed by the on-disc DLC.

Except now that they're probably not putting stuff on the disc, consumers will have no clue whether or not the DLC was made before the game was released or not while they do exactly the same thing as they've been doing so far.

That’s been Capcom’s standard explanation for on-disc downloadable content. For its fighting games, it’s definitely made a certain amount of sense. You need all users to have the same content locally to ensure there are not sync issues in multiplayer. Look at Mortal Kombat for an example of how it can all go wrong.

What are they talking about here?

Mortal Kombat had DLC characters that were not on the disc. To use them against someone online, they must also have had the characters downloaded otherwise your opponent wouldn't have the data and that just couldn't possibly work. There were optional patches (IIRC) to let you battle against those characters, but being optional, a lot of people just didn't bother. Ergo, you could buy your awesome DLC characters and never be able to use them online because no one else had them.

On-disc DLC does take care of this, as everyone automatically has all of the required data. Capcom also has to pay for everything downloaded off of Sony/Microsoft's servers (such as a gigantic patch with all the DLC characters), so they also save money. I don't think those points justify the practice, but there you go.

Then you'd have people complaining that they're being forced to download patches they don't want/need.

Or, like in the case with the occasional Sony patch, a save corrupting update can't be warned about and avoided.

They do need the patch. They need it to play with people who have the DLC. It's a much better (for the customer) solution than what's currently done.

AE style updates should be the only DLC Capcom should do for fighting games. It's ironic how they say that locking the characters on the disc is a way to prevent the game from needing an super update yet SFxT is the current gen Capcom fighter that needs a new engine update the most.

The issue was never "this content was on the disc I am so mad."

It was Ono directly lying to everyone and saying outright "we're not done with the characters yet. so we couldn't fit them into the game. we're not sure how to make them work yet." then a couple days later they were found on the disc, complete and gameplay ready.

It's not just that, it's the fact that it's also a huge amount of content locked (12 characters, hundreds of gems/colors/costumes) are already usable on disc, and the fact we have to wait until at least fall to use those 12 characters(if we don't get them earlier like what the blog said)

They need to just stop coming out with games at set prices. They should just price the game at whatever they think it's worth, and let customers decide if it's worth it or not.

Yeah that's true as well. The sad thing is that this game sunk in the community's esteem pretty quickly. So there won't be much of an active scene willing to pay for the DLC once it comes out.

Really I think they would've made more money if at the outset they had said "the way the funding works we have to pay for making these characters by having them as DLC. They'll be available for purchase on Day 1." That's what they're saying now anyway, that it's an issue how the characters were funded in the first place.

That doesn't explain why colors were locked away when they were going to be free anyway, though.

I believe he's just making a devil's advocacy point. No one really cares enough to complain about downloading a mandatory patch, especially not in the numbers that would cause Capcom to reconsider its approach a la on-disc DLC.
