D1, nah, D2, not essential but it is a fun game. There's a video IGN did that summarizes the events of the first two games if you're only planning on playing the first 2 to get the story aspects.

D1 is pretty lacking in story (at least my 8 year old self thought so...), d2 is fun, but not essential. If you're eager to be able to play D3 and want to strike while the iron's hot, I'd say just get D3 and if you're really interested, play D2 later.

Just youtube all the cinematics for the games. I love the games but the best parts are playing the harder difficulties, not the first run through on normal.

Diablo 2 isn't really worth playing honestly, the game really has not aged well. It's a decade old game and it shows, things that feel obvious today aren't in it. Just go into 3 and avoid the rather ancient gameplay. It's especially not worth doing single player either so don't even think about that route unless you want a rather miserable time.

Definitely not, you won't even finish them if you try. I got diablo about 2 years ago and loved it and still couldn't finish it. It's too old.

Just play D3 since it's the best. D2 was fun with a group of friends. Some of the level design in that game is really bad. D3 fixes this problem.

Wouldn't Diablo 1 be the one to play if it was only for story stuff?

I mean D3 takes place in the same area as D1 (in the beginning at least) and there's a LOT of D1 characters in it.
