People get indignant about their pirating and make it sound as if you're wrong for actually paying for things. I'm not sure if this just happens a lot to me since I work selling music, movies and games but I've noticed that a lot of people are really proud of the fact that they pirate stuff. Like I'll be looking at movies on Blu-Ray and they'll say something like "Why would you ever buy movies? You can just download every movie for free?" or the slightly more tolerable "There is no reason to buy movies when you can just pay $8 a month for Netflix".
I mean when I was a kid with no money or job piracy seemed like the only way I could watch most movies.. but I feel like if someone has the means, they should just pay for it. Or at least not act like it's stupid to pay for things that you can get for free. I've recently gotten into purchasing movies on Blu-Ray an I can honestly say that I feel a lot better doing it. The quality is generally much better than that which is found online, and special features (especially feature commentary) are almost always great. I feel like between buying a few movies a month and having a Netflix subscription there is no reason to pirate movies at all.
Music is a bit more tricky for me though. I'll buy CDs from artists I really enjoy, but I often justify my music piracy by seeing the artists that I like in concert, rather than paying for their CDs.
Piracy never really bothered me in the past, but now I'm starting to understand why people get so angry about it.
Few things give me more pleasure than purchasing music from an aspiring artist I enjoy.
I'm hardly a person of means right now and so having any spending money is a rarity, but it feels very good to make that kind of purchase. It really feels like you can be the difference between them continuing to pursue their dream or deciding that it isn't financially viable.
I don't feel quite as strongly towards movies, but I still want to support movies that I really love.
I was hoping this topic would be about the pirate versus ninja phenomenon. I am definitely a pirate for life, pirates rool ninjas drool. (Unless they're ninjas on a boat)
As for piracy as in digital piracy, I mean sure I think its cool to try and support the stuff you like, but not everybody has a certain amount of disposable income, and truly if you feel like amusing yourself and not paying for it, well there are plenty of worse things.
I do support what I like to a degree I'm comfortable with, but really it's not one of the bigger priorities in my life. Though for example I do only buy video games, no pirating. I also try to support comics since it's so niche.
I mean, just for an example, since this is kind of a guilt thing, in the big picture it'd be better to pirate everything and give the money you'd spend to good charities instead right?
When you think about how many problems there are in society and the money system in general, and spice it up with how we're all gonna die, it's hard to worry so much about things like whether somebody pays for The Walking Dead.

I know friends sometimes tell each other "dude, just download it" if their friend is about to buy something expensive, but I've never heard people get indignant about it or talk to strangers about it.

For me it really depends. If we're talking about getting the latest big thing or whatever, I'm 'meh, like it matters' but the more obscure stuff indie/niche/small developer, nah that breaks my heart man.
Hell, nowadays if I do something like that, it's just to give it a spin and then get rid of it. If it's something I LOVE, then I have to buy it period. For instance I pirated Final Fantasy Tactics back in the day (never released in Europe) and it's one of my fav games obv. When the PSP port came out, there was no way I wasn't going to buy it. Aaand in the end that port didn't turn it out that great, but still!
I don't know if saying that I pirated a game is gonna get me the mod hammer.... oh well.
I like buying things, I very rarely pirate anything anymore. There have been several instances where I've pirated something, enjoyed it a lot, then went out and bought it. I can of course see the advantage to pirating instead of buying stuff, but to think it's wrong or stupid to ever buy anything is just a bad outlook.

"There is no reason to buy movies when you can just pay $8 a month for Netflix".
I don't see whats wrong with this one. I never watch movies more then once, so I see little reason to own something that has no point other then to sit on my shelf when I can just watch it on Netflix.
What bugs me is when my friends give me crap excuses like "I don't have any money man, I'm broke."
Then stop ****ing buying DVDs, games, and music. They know very well how to pirate, I've seen them do it a lot.
That's the only time when I'll scold someone for buying new media. If you're going to b**** and complain about being broke, then do something about it.

Also I have a friend who won't watch season 4 of Breaking Bad until it's on Netflix. So we can't talk about it around him. Yet he pirates music all the time. Just download the show man.
I don't pirate and I think people are wrong for paying for a lot of things, if you buy anything put out by the corporations that make up the RIAA and MPAA you're straight up supporting some of the worst people on the planet and supporting the further erosion of copyright law into complete madness, as well as the eventual destruction of the internet as we know it(something like SOPA will fly under the radar eventually, hell your ISP is already logging all of your activities and the government has a back door that they don't even need a warrant to access)
I am in the "Why buy it when Netflix is so cheap" camp. It is incredibly rare that I rewatch movies, so owning it is pretty pointless for me. However, I also rarely pirate anything. I don't pirate music because I just listen to stuff like spotify, which helps the artists anyway. Typically pirating is something I only do for something that is stupid to purchase (such as Earthbound).

I never watch movies more then once, so I see little reason to own something that has no point other then to sit on my shelf when I can just watch it on Netflix. I just find this one annoying because if I'm buying something, it's probably because it's not on Netflix. I don't like spending money just for the hell of it... so I pay for a Netflix subscription so that I can still have all the entertainment I need while supporting the people who produce it. Generally speaking, I'm not going to pay for a disc that is "just the movie". Unless they're going to throw in some good extras then I probably will just pass on seeing it altogether. As good as it feels to support the things I love, movies aren't exactly cheap, and I think it's important for companies putting out DVDs and Blu-Rays to make them worth buying. For example I really want to see the movie Chronicle... but if they're going to give me 1 deleted scene, a camera test and a couple of trailers... I'm going to pass on it. At least until it finds itself in a bargain bin.
I don't know much about the RIAA or the MPAA and which products they're getting paid for, but if they are going to benefit from my purchase of films, and there is no other way for me to pay the people producing it... I'm still going to buy it. It's unfortunate that terrible people might be getting a portion of my money, but I don't think that nobody getting my money is a better alternative to that.
The only thing I currently pirate is the anime that crunchyroll and funimation dont license ( I have a crunchyroll subscription and funis stuff is out on hulu)
Which is fine i cant be expected to pay for things Ill never have an opportunity to buy.

I think I would be more willing to buy more music/moves if it didn't fund the RIAA/MPAA
This.
I mean I'm going to buy Rush's album when it comes out in a couple weeks, but the only albums I'll ever buy hard copies of are ones that I personally consider a "Big deal".
iTunes, though. I'll buy stuff through that no problem. Better funding Apple than the scam artists at RIAA.
also I'm not a movie person. Most I do there is when I watch one that the family rents a couple times a year.
The worst is when they are like "Oh, I'm actually helping the company! Because if I really like it then I go out and buy it!"
Which is the most hilarious lie I have ever heard.
Nah man. The worse are the ones who act like they're some sort of crusader of justice going "We'll pirate until you lower your prices you greedy greedy company you!".

When it comes to movies, the pirated version is pretty much never superior unless you're one of those nerds who prefers to watch movies on their laptops or something.

From: CycloRaptor | #038 that may actually be the worst ayuyu post, wow That's true though, I can't stand non-interactive entertainment, trailers are short so they're much more tolerable than a whole movie..

Well, with a pirated copy I can play it on any device that plays .avi or .mp4 depending on what format I downloaded, so I can play it on my computer or laptop or tablet or ipod or even TV because this isn't the 80s and we can connect computers to TVs now. And I can keep the movie organized on my hard drive instead of having to deal with swapping disks.
Though lots of physical copies of movies come with digital versions now, and stuff like Amazon Video, which is great, but those also have restrictive DRM.

I have a friend who thinks he's really cool for pirating things. We were both planning on playing planescape torment this summer and talking about it with each other. The first question he asked me is "so where'd you download it?". I told him i bought it off gog.com. He looked at me and gave me some cocky smile.
I've pirated music in the past, but every song I've pirated was well over 5 years old at the time I downloaded it. Its not completely justified, but I do feel that american copyright laws are kinda whack and something thats like 12 or so years old should start entering public domain.

Well, I suppose those are superior for those who get a hard-on for piracy warnings. And unskippable trailers. Because those are fun. Yep, because 15 seconds of piracy warnings are enough to negate all of the extras found on physical copies of movies. Not to mention that the audio/video quality on a Blu-Ray is always better than that which you'd find online. I can understand people not caring about the difference, but it's absolutely crazy to say that a pirated version is "better". I can't speak to unskippable trailers because I haven't come across any.
I can understand what fool said about being able to play things on anything, but that just speaks to digital distribution being superior, not piracy. The highest quality rips pretty much never look or sound as good as the disc.
no seriously, the pirated version can be equal by any level you want from a technical standpoint. that's really not an issue, you'd just need to get the higher quality stuff. fact is you can also get it at a variety of other, smaller levels too. like sure you can get the fully uncompressed 1080p vid with FLAC, or you can compromise here and there.

yeah, not to mention you can just straight up download an image of the dvd and burn it

For popular movies, sure. But some are just much harder to find in 1080p. MKVs are also kind of a hassle when you want to watch things on your TV, especially when dealing with subs and such. It's definitely possible to get around all of that, but I don't see how it is easier or better than simply having it on disc which often comes with it's own digital copy.
