I've played a good bit of III, but have wanted to try the newer ones for a while now, and I guess they're on sale or something. What are the changes and improvements and selling points and such, and which of 4 and 5 should I get?

4 adds cool stuff like religion, which actually really works, and greatly expands upon a lot of aspects of 3. It does come with the sacrifice of those zany live-action advisors though, which to this day I honestly kinda miss .>_>; All told it's a better game.

5 greatly enhances combat, and visually it's kinda gorgeous, but it's lacking still in a couple of improvements that 4 made which makes declaring a superior game somewhat tough for me. New expansion for it pretty soon though, which will add back things like religion.

The main changes to Civ V: Hex-based tiles instead of squares and only one unit per tile are the most obvious changes.

Get 4 now with all the expansions. It has got to be quite cheap now or wait until it goes on sale.
Buy 5 in 2 years or so when there comes a bundle of it and every expansion.

Both are great games, and 5 has the potential to be better imo, but it's lacking in content compared to 4 atm.

Ya, both are great, and have their pros and cons.

Difference is that IV you can get for cheap as all hell. Maybe wait for the 4th of July Steam sale and grab it for super cheap.

I think Civ IV was on sale a few days ago on Steam for under $5, but I'm not sure of that price.
Civ V has a free "trial" this weekend, and the GotY edition that I think has all but next week's expansion is on sale for $12.49 USD.

Civ IV plus all the expansions is basically the current zenith of the Civ experience. Go for that.

I still maintain that Civ III had the best music, though!

IV is terrible.

Go for 3 or 5.

Dear lord it doesn't. It doesn't very badly.

Man I have no idea how it's possible for somebody to like 3 more than 4. I loved 3 but 4 fixes so much about it.

I've tried to replay Civ 4 several times. I've tried to force myself to play it again.

Then I inevitably go back to 3 and start a game there. I've played 3 at least 10 times and I've played 4 all of twice.

Its one of the few games I truly have regretted buying.

Probably more than 10 actually.

Yeah 4 is just really kinda bad, I dunno why so many people have such an infatuation with it.

3 is definitely better and 5 is better than that imo.

i was addicted to 3 but i fell in love with 4

IMO, you can't go wrong between those two but 3 is a bit dated

haven't played 5 yet

The difference is that 4 and 5 are actually decent, and 3 blows some major chunks.

edit: People are actually championing 3? Ugh, people. Just, no.

1 - Great game
2 - Modification of great game, but more a technical improvement than anything else
3 - Introduction of culture, differences in choice of civilization, and otherwise a bunch of terrible mechanics (particularly in the tech tree)
4 - Improvements on culture, more variation in unit types, unit xp, religion (that's a negative,) and a lot of little things that are an improvement rather than a detriment.
5 - Takes just about everything I ever said I wanted in a Civ game and manages to roll it together into one. Still, in spite of having the things I want all at once, it isn't inherently better.

The tech tree is reason enough to hate 3.

IV>V (though this has potential to be the best> III

not sure why people literally think III is better in any way.
