Also, this topic has made me realize that I have trouble remembering what the board was like before mercs.
Like, I remember isolated things -- HM running around with his flavor of the month, arguing with Leon about Final Fantasy, Ulti going on his crusade against user contests -- but if you asked me "What was the board culture like in general?" I'd be hard-pressed to give an answer.

I've been complaining about b8 being lame to weaku for a while already. This right now is my only active message on the board, not like I've ever been a very active user, but I don't think that ever happened before in the like 5-6 years or so years I've been going here.
I always especially liked the late night topics, but the board seems to be pretty much dead around that time these days or there's nothing going on at least.
The board used to be a much more free flowing place. No one cared what others thought about them enough to not post a topic. They proceeded to cry like little babies the second anyone said anything bad mind you, but before that topic was made it was glorious and splendid.
As someone who has been around a very long time the board has always seemed to evolve year to year to me, different things taking root. There isn't really one set thing.

Mercs is a war, pjbasis. It is an outright war that consumes the mind and the body, if not your very soul. You go in believing yourself the master of your chosen, but you leave knowing you were the master of nothing except for your own inevitable doom. There is no winning Mercs, there is only survival. If what remains of your fractured mind could be called survival.

You didn't break my spirit, you broke the game itself. I liked to play the game (which you all just lost btw), you just wanted something that was called victory. When I realized you were no longer playing the game, I decided not to play either.
Also I didn't realize KJH was so bad at running his own team.

So I looked up Mercs, and it looks like a fun game. Too bad that I'm unlikely to play it. I'd probably be worse off than anyone knowing how long it takes me to learn a new system, and it looks dead already.
I don't think Santa was disliked, he was more like board 8's mascot/joke character
Palmer, no idea. personally I never liked him much myself but I didn't dislike him or actively attack him. when people started harassing him I found it to be sort of weird.
Ayuyu isn't too bad sometimes but overall he's annoying and completely lacks any sort of awareness which just makes it worse

I definitely agree there are a group of users that are just rude to people in general, which makes people just not want to post.
He'll deny it of course, but Sess is probably the most visible of these people.
Tons of people will pointlessly accuse people of attention whoring for making just any old topic too, such as Sbell attacking Punny for his life stories etc. This probably makes people not wanna talk about their **** as much.

The turning point, IIRC, was the fact that he mentioned he had a scholarship to go to university, but he blew it because he didn't have the motivation to get himself out of bed in the mornings. People were like, "wow, that's terrible," and then they started seeing everything he said in a negative light, even things they would've been cool with before.

Personally I haven't differed much over the years and stayed similarly active, though communities and people have changed. Obviously I had more or less posts depending on what I was doing, but I've never really thought much of the changes because I rather expect them. Haven't gotten bored yet. I also don't think too much has changed either; people grew up and some have had personal changes, but the amount of communication I think has gone up. Though yes, mostly in more secluded ways. Less posts on the board, but more content.
And I've never really been one to go 'oh man this board was so good five years ago!' because I can safely say I have enjoyed it more over the years, by a lot.

I dunno, I used to think of him like lihlih, just posting silly things and B8 starts hating on them for some reason I never understand, while I think they're okay and their posts are entertaining........... but it seems to have just made ayuyu intentionally saying awful things, as if fueled by b8's hatred.

oh yeah I guess I do remember hearing things about that in "palmer sucks" discussions
sounds like a really dumb thing to hate a guy for, but it is true that once a user gets hated on for one thing it will stick with them unless they can handle it well - though either way it will stick with them for a long time

If being less 'social' means less trainwrecks of topics like these, then personally I'm all for it. To me, "social" topics have always been nothing more than repugnant trolling/flame wars where everyone acts as stupid as they possibly can. I'm glad we've done away with them.

Nah, there's more trolling, easily. If anything that's the one thing that increased a lot over the years, and instead of dismissing it as trolling and moving along we opened a feeding place. Then more joined on it because it got posts and we do have some people that just go with everything.

Nor do I try to act even worse, it's just that I've got literally nobody to complain about **** to IRL, I mean you remember that topic I made about friends discovering posts about my roommate I made here? Since then they pretty much all started avoiding me altogether except for a few of them (my bestest friends I'm friend with since forever, but those just live super far away) so b8 is pretty much my go-to place to blow off steam now. I'll move soon though, with said bestest friends so it'll change!
