An inconsistent but talented Euro who can't be depended on at all?

Well, he's certainly be a perfect replacement for Gabby <_<

Thomas was very good to start the year but his numbers post-WH are a very noticeable dropoff - went from a sub-2 to a 2.6 or so. save% from 94% to 91%. Maybe it wasn't the cup, but the WH thing just got to him. We could potentially chalk March up to Rask's injury, but prior to that, not really. It's not like I didn't bring this up back when it was very obviously happening, either.

The difference between someone who is sitting out a year and someone who is retiring is significant. I can laugh about what a fraud that political stance of his is, but I love Tim Thomas the Boston Bruin. If he chooses to end that, that sucks. The relationship thing is, I hope you would realize, just strange and senseless - you don't just spend a year on recovering relationships only to ditch them again. If he stays off the ice and pursues his family and faith, then my stance will definitely change.

I can't really speak for other fans, and yeah that seems hypocritical given that I'm essentially speaking for Tim Thomas. I'm just assuming he isn't deluded into thinking he'll be fixing up decades of relationship woes by taking a single year off.

Lidstrom is walking away and getting nothing but praise and glory. Thomas is only four years younger, and getting nothing but scorn and resentment. Is there any legitimate non-political reason for that?

Lidstrom is one of the best to ever play his position. He was racking up cups and had already established himself as a future hall of famer while Thomas was still a journeyman nobody. Lidstrom is retiring after a series of one year deals, each of which could very well have been his last. Thomas is taking a sabbatical in the middle of his contract.

Yeah, wow, practically the same person, yet they're treated so differently. Must be political.

Literally taking the time out of my day to respond to SMuffin comparing Thomas to Lidstrom.

You forgot one more key difference between Thomas and Lidstrom. Lidstrom played for excellent teams who might have very well won the cup anyway even if he hadn't been there, whereas Thomas damn near won one all by himself on a team full of nobodies. In any case, your argument doesn't make any sense. Good players should be allowed to retire but journeyman nobodies should be forced to stay? That's like, anti-logic.

Anyway neon, I owned Thomas (and Rask) in fantasy this year so I definitely know what you're saying about him falling off in the second half. Still though, he put in a pretty damn good season overall and was perfectly fine in the first round.

Taking a year off for relationships doesn't make a whole lot of sense really, but who are we to judge? Maybe there's stuff going on in his life that we just don't know about. I have a hard time second guessing ANY athlete who says "I just don't feel like it anymore." The guy is already rich, already accomplished everything (and more) he ever dreamed of... if he doesn't feel like he has another season in him right now, who are we to demand he keep playing? The outrage by the Boston fanbase is particularly amusing to me. Didn't you all want/assume he was going to be traded anyway?

I've always thought less of Chara than most people tbqh. Honestly though, without Thomas standing on his head, they're out in the first round against Montreal.

You're comparing one season of Thomas to an entire career of Lidstrom.

Also, Lidstrom played for 20 seasons in the NHL, Thomas has only played 8. There's a pretty big difference there. I'm sure many more fans remember a time without Thomas than do a time without Lidstrom.

Well, please don't misunderstand, I'm not at all trying to downgrade Lidstrom's achievements at all. For my money, the guy may be the best of all time and if it were up to me, I'd rename the Norris to the Lidstrom.

I just don't think that career achievement really matters much in this equation. Both are very good players who could still play, but are choosing not to. The reasoning doesn't really matter. What they've done in the past doesn't really matter. They both could easily come back and help their teams, but for personal reasons, have decided against it.

Okay yeah, in that regard they're not totally different. I think people are still just uppity at Thomas over the White House incident (which holy crap was really such a minor thing), and the Lidstrom retirement is less of a surprise due it being a question for three seasons now.

I don't even know how you managed to wring that out of what I said. You asked why Lidstrom's retirement and Thomas's furlough are being treated so differently. I explained that it is because they are completely different players in completely different situations with completely different histories. Thomas isn't even retiring, if he is to be believed. I imagine the reaction to all of this would be quite different if he was calling it quits instead of thinking that he's such hot **** he can just sit out a year whenever he fancies.

I also imagine the reaction would be different if Thomas had played for the Bruins for 20 years and won 4 cups. You can't just strip away every distinguishing characteristic of a player's career and ask why they don't get the same treatment.

You're just trying to make something political out of something that isn't.

I think people are mixed in terms of "want" re: Thomas, his salary cap hit, Rask, Savard's situation, and the need for a stud offensive player. The current sports radio take is that he and Rask share the same agent, so Thomas will play (and get traded to a team he wants) and Rask will get paid as a RFA before the CBA is up. I think Savard is the guy who gets screwed in every situation that Thomas has forced.

I'm not a doctor by any stretch but I don't see him coming back. He definitely can't this year if Thomas sits out (or retires because of how old Thomas is). For someone who wants to come back, knowing you absolutely can't is probably not a fun bit of news.
