So if you have been following at this point you will have noticed that me and TheArkOfTurus have been doing Fire Emblem runs of the strategy Shining Force games. I had a lot of fun beating Shining Force I and II I decided that I will move on to CD instead of Shining Force III.
(of you care reasons why are because Ark hasn't played CD yet and 2 because I am a big fan of these games!)
The only difference between CD and Shining Force I and II is that there is no town exploration. Which makes it even more like Fire Emblem.
So here are the rules. ================= When a character dies he stays dead. No revives. No Egresses. You cannot retreat from battle. *If you do the characters you lost stay dead. When Nick or Deanna or Natasha (yes there are points where there are several leaders) die it results in a game over and reset from your last save point. If Natasha dies before she becomes a leader just have her stand still in those battles. And finally I will be playing only on hard because there are alot less characters this time than in the past.
So anyways this should be fun hope you enjoy following!
From: Dark Silvergun | #003 Actually I have my own topic for the Premium Disc of Shining Force III, be aware there are spoilers in it: I hope you don't mind If i don't look until I play three. (Even if I have to go on Lfaqs) I NEVER played III before.
So I got a jump start on this game because it is indeed one of my favorites.
Even though the entire party is relative to some from the old Shining Force there is a downside we don't have a healer yet just a monk.
Fun Facts about Shining Force CD: Book 1 takes place a few years after Shining Force I. Book 2 is right after Book 1. Book 3 is only ever part of Shining Force CD not either Gaiden's. This game has no relevance to Shining Force Gaiden 3 Final Conflict. And Finally, NICK is the only Shining Force Main Character not related. If you wanna learn more I can talk about how Max is related to Bowie.
Some notes to the point: Battle 1: This battle is too easy because they boost your party with good weapons. Battle 2: I messed up which character got their items so this battle took longer than expected. After the battle Cray joins the force he is another Monk. (Two monks no healer.) Battle 3: Kinda simple besides the fact that the knights in this game have Boost 2. Battle 4: This battle is kind of a problem because the overly spawning Dwarves this caused me to lose Cray because he was standing over a spawn hole and got killed by an Archer. Battle 5: Goes without a hitch despite only having one healer. But after the battle you get the best Bird Battler of the series in Claude!!
And that is a the end of the Chapter.
After Chapter 1 the Force looks like this. The Force: NICK Lvl: 5 RUCE Lvl: 6 SHADE LVL: 5 SIG LVL: 6 WENDY LVL : 8 APIS LVL: 9 CLAUDE LVL: 6
The Dead: Cray LVL: 2
Oh! At the start of the next chapter they revive your dead. So just have them stand still until you get a chance to take them out.
Finished Chapter 1 myself. Not much to comment on. Battle 4 took way too long due to noticing a chest at the beginning of the level just as I was about to finish off the boss, so I sent Apis way back to the start of the huge map... To get a medical herb. I think I'll be using a walkthrough for the rest of this. All the battles so far have been easy, otherwise. Apis has been a beast, and Cray has been gaining strength like he didn't have a weapon (3 strength for both his first two levels). Nick had been underwhelming, but the middle sword should help. Sig's the only character I'd like to replace at this point.

Fought two more battles, no deaths. Have a few characters who are now promotable, but still no promotion-only weapons, so I'll hold off for awhile. Not at all promotable are Stocke and Mayfair, who joined at level 4/5, while all my other characters are 9/10. Thanks for that, game! Stocke seems like he'll be a beast if I can keep him alive, considering he's only two points behind Shade in attack, despite a 5 level difference. Given how fast May died on me, though... I think I'll give him a cheerful bread, but that might not be enough to stop him from being OHKO fodder.
Well my time to report! I just finished chapter 2!!
No real trouble really. I am actually so over leveled that I killed Bazoo in two turns.. Well Ruce got two attacks in a row but then was followed up by an Apis attack and that was certainly all she wrote. It was then I got Yeesha to join the force an Nick was revealed as a member of the Cypress Royal Family?! DUM DUM DUM
So.... THE FORCE: NICK Lvl: 12 RUCE Lvl: 12 SHADE LVL: 12 SIG LVL: 12 WENDY LVL : 12 APIS LVL: 13 CLAUDE LVL: 12 MAYFAIR LVL: 10 STOCK LVL: 11 YEESHA LVL: 10
The Dead: Cray LVL: 2
Stupid Cray.
Well I am doing a good job so far but we'll see how it goes.
This game has been waaaaaaay too easy so far. Only time my characters come even close to death are mage spells, physical attacks rarely do more than the lower single digits, and enemies seem to love attacking my most durable members. I'm starting to get paranoid that I didn't set it to hard mode, even though I'm certain I did.
Beat Bazoo. He got off one attack, a single hit to Ruce (for 1 damage, of course.) Was able to get Stock (I remembered that he wasn't the main character of Radiant Historia this time!) and Mayfair caught up. Probably going to promote whenever I get the chance.
Any objection to changing the no Egress rule to no Egressing after the first turn? The game seems to like having multi-battle stretches between towns, which wasn't really a thing in Shining Force 1/2 (outside of the Zeon battle).
Chapter 3 finished. The difficulty finally picked up! I also lost Yeesha in her first battle. I wasn't used to enemiess that were actually threatening, so I tried to feed her EXP at the start. That led to me getting swarmed. An archer hurt her badly, and I couldn't surround her before a lizard man finished the job.
I got Domingo in the second battle... Or so I thought. At the end of the battle, I went to look at his stats. Blaze 3? Poor defense? This isn't Domingo. This isn't Domingo at all. Fake Domingo seemed useful enough (two level three spells when Wendy was stuck on Blaze 2), at least. The bow knights were pretty imposing, and I have a bad history with them (lost Khris to the ShF1 version, and a whopping four characters to the ones in Shining Force 2), but I managed to get through it, and the following battle without casualties. I got Kashing for battle 14, subbed Gyan out (I looked up the characters who join in book 2. Wanted to avoid using them if they weren't necessary. Gyan was pretty unimpressive, anyway), brought him up to level 14 unpromoted like everyone else, and promoted him after winning an uneventful battle. I made it through the bow knights without a casualty, it's a miracle!
I Egressed at the start of battle #15, and subbed out my mages for Gyan and Kashing (Gates forced his way into my party. He didn't even have the decency to be particularly good while doing it like Frayja!). The enemy wasn't able to do any significant damage before Claude, running ring in hand, took out the fizzle ball, and re-enabled my healing. The enemy was more of a threat at that point, but with healing taking them down wasn't a big deal. Wendy and Fake Domingo go back in for Gyan and Gates.
Battle #16, now there's a big deal. The trouble started as soon as I approached the stairs, and didn't let up for the rest of the battle. I absentmindedly sent Fake Domingo up the wall to target a brass gunner. Whoops, turns out the Hawkmen were really strong! An arrow, and two Hawkmen attacks took him down. RIP Fake Domingo, you may not have been the real thing, but you were still a pretty cool flying squid monster.
The hawkmen (with a boost spell cast on them by a 3rd hawkman) started attacking the rest of the force. One of them tagged Wendy, who was barely able to survive the hit. Two others and a cerberus brought Ruce down to single digit HP. It's a good thing I had three healers around, I doubt I would have made it through that section without further losses otherwise. The next junction of the battle was troublesome as well, with a demon master and a cerberus bringing Apis down to critical HP. I sent Ruce down as far as he could go, and luckily the Belial decided to cast bolt on him, rather than the near-dead Apis. The three healers again were vital to making it through to this section alive. I'm pretty glad I didn't follow through on that replacing Sig idea! Dantom was a pretty poor challenge after all of that. He went down rather quietly, only getting the chance to cast an ineffective dispel.
Shriek joined the force as I head on to the final chapter. My initial plan was to sub him in for Claude, but Fake Domingo's death put the kibosh on that. Doubt I would have gone through with it anyway, Claude has turned into too much of a beast to bench, even if losing him would effectively mean losing two characters.
The Force
Nick: 14/7 Ruce: 14/7 Shade: 14/6 Sig: 14/6 Wendy: 14/7 Apis: 14/6 Cray: 14/6 (After learning boost, expect this to rise quickly) Claude: 14/8 Stock: 14/7 Mayfair: 14/6 (See Cray, but with Aura instead) Gyan: 14/3 Kashing: 14/7 Gates: ?/4 Shriek: ?/7
Lost two characters to the first battle of chapter 4. It was a very, very boring battle (as low movement battles tend to be), so I figured the boss would be a boring, easy opponent as well. He attacked Shriek, got a critical hit, and OHKOed him. Then he got a second turn quickly (did he get ShF2 style double turns?) and got a double hit on Shade, killing him as well. He got one more attack before going down; a double hit to Sig (who was durable enough to survive). Luckily I was able to take him down before he moved again, the damned lucky bastard.
The rest of chapter 4 was pretty anti-climactic. The generic enemies stopped being threatening, and I was prepared for boss double turns this time. Occasionally my characters were threatened by a bolt spell or demon breath, but I had two aura casters, and a large stock of healing rains (why were these buyable?), so it was rarely lethal. I say rarely because I did lose Amigo in the final battle; it's hard to recover from a demon breath when it kills you in one hit, you know? Other than that, the battles were straightforward and underwhelming. Kinda disappointed.
The dead book Yeesha: 11 Fake Domingo: ?/6 Shriek: ?/8 Shade: 14/8 Amigo: ?/7
Top 5 characters 1. Cray: Easy choice for MVP. Best attack of the force, great durability once he got some levels, on top of having heal and boost? Yeah, easy decision.
2. Stocke: Dropped off near the end, but was a death machine for the hardest part of the game, doing insane damage for an archer. Probably better than Lyle, I didn't think I'd say that about any ShF centaur archer.
3. Ruce: Great tank, and the enemies really liked attacking him for some reason. Was always among the physically strongest members of the force, too.
4. Apis: Like Stocke (and most starter centaurs), he dropped off near the end, but was always valuable. The best early game character, he wasn't quite a match for Dantares, but he was a hell of a lot better than Ken, Chester, Donhort or Campbell.
5. Claude: He was good. A little too good, because his stellar stats meant I gave the critical sword to Nick, and he was stuck with a lousy weapon. Still, there were quite a few times having a birdman came in handy, and my other fliers had a way of dying quickly. Easily better than the Genesis Birdmen, but I'm not so sure about how he stacks up with Birdpeople on the Saturn.
Least valuable character (who I regularly used) Wendy. Blaze 3 is your best spell at the end of the game? Get out. Keeping her alive was a waste of effort, she made Wizard Kazin look like an MVP caliber character (and Tyrin the best character in video game history).
Lost Jaha in the second battle. Sent him forward to tank, forgetting the lizardman had blaze. Whoops. Going to have to be really careful with Eric and Slade (argh get some original names) going forward, considering the party split.
Finished chapter 1. The dragon newts were pretty threatening near the beginning (see previous post), but not much else in chapter 1 was. Not much else to say, really.
The Force Deanna: 7 Natasha: 7 Eric: 8 Dawn: 7 Luke: 7 Slade: 6 Graham: 6
THE FORCE: Nick LVL: 13/8 RUCE LVL: 14/8 SHADE LVL: 13/7 SIG LVL: 13/4 WENDY LVL: 13/5 APIS LVL: 14/7 CLAUDE LVL:13/9 STOCK LVL: 12/7 MAYFAIR LVL: 11/4 GYAN LVL: 10/6 DOMINGO LVL ?/6 KASHING LVL ?/4
DA BENCH: GATES LVL: ?/3
THE DEAD: Cray LVL: 2 YEESHA LVL: 10/1
At the Start of the Chapter my force looked like that but in the first battle I lost Kashing quick to King Edmond and so that sucked so that's when Shreik joined the party. But then I got Randolf. One of my all time favorite Paladins. He is stronger than Apis but half the levels. But then Geppel moved in and Killed Stock and put Amingo in.
Got through Bazoo because of this game's awesomeness of letting you buy healing rains. AND it is the same thing that worked against Woldol and the Evil Monster. Then Woldol the Scorpion King...
First off, having 13 force members rock! (Can I technically use Lug because he is supposed to be Luke from Shining Force 1 and he died for me lol)
I really didn't have problems. I did unfortunately forget that you need to hit him with Sword of Hayija to start but once I figured it out this battle wasn't tough. I did lose Amingo to Demon Breath..
AND THAT WAS THAT!!!
THE FORCE: Nick LVL: 13/15 RUCE LVL: 14/14 SHADE LVL: 13/16 SIG LVL: 13/9 WENDY LVL: 13/9 APIS LVL: 14/13 CLAUDE LVL:13/17 MAYFAIR LVL: 11/6 GYAN LVL: 10/10 DOMINGO LVL ?/11 RANDOLF LVL: ?/10 LUG LVL:?/12
Yeah, congrats Silvergun. Need to try doing the Premium disc some time myself, but it always seemed so daunting, like I'd need to spend days grinding for it.
And nice job finishing book 1, eaedwards, even if you got my two best characters killed <_<.
Anyway, finished up to battle #17 (the one where the party meets up). Battle 15 was somewhat tough due to darkness and spawning bow knights, but I managed to get through everything without taking another loss.
Good luck with the last book. Make sure you use all your power up items on the first three books since they are the only characters you can use in the final book, which is just a battle with all the game's bosses...

Not true actually. If you make the third book a sequel of the other two then all your characters and stats are transferred onto the third. It is the 4th book and bonus chapter that there is a set party bur they have set items and levels too.

Thanks!
As for grinding, it's not too bad, just focus on 12 characters you are definitely going to use for the Premium Disc. The nice thing is that finishing Scenario 3 is not required to use the save file. Oh, and one of the characters has to be Synbios, since he is the default main character of the Premium Disc.
Level wise this should be fine: 10/20/30
However the optimal level in my opinion would be: 17/30/30

Warning, the self-destruct system has been activated, all personnel should evacuate immediately, 5 minutes to detonation.
Maybe it's different in the CD version? 2nd level spells can knock people down to half health, but the other enemies are too weak/dumb to take advantage of it, for the most part.
Anyway, up to the battle where you get Rush. Dropped Eric for Higins, not sure who to drop next. Still no deaths since battle #2.
