I have this irrational hatred of robots. I’m not sure when it actually came to fruition or why because I ate that s*** up when I was a kid. But now every time I see one this wave of irritation and disgust comes over me. They just look SO. F***ING. STUPID. Of course what looks stupid is subjective but robots seem to do it for me all the time. And I’m sure I like a bunch of stuff that definitely looks stupid to other people.

I guess the best explanation for my hatred that I can come up with at this moment is because they’re ugly. Aesthetics are important to me in determining what I like so I’m a looks over personality guy usually. So exceptions to my robot hate are those that don’t necessarily look like robots or are more humanoid in general.

That being said, I could not care less about this piece of junk “character.” Everything he does is annoying because it’s inherent with being a goddamn piece of metal that moves on its own. I honestly don’t remember if I’ve ever touched this guy in Brawl. I have this policy where I try out every character in these games so I could get the feel for everyone/find some surprises and whatnot but I can’t remember if I kept to that in Brawl or made an exception because looking at this guy filled me with so much hate that I skipped over him. Even if it had turned out that I was the best with it or it felt the most comfortable to me I already know that I couldn’t bear seeing it on screen for that long and me being the one actually controlling it. Yes I have issues.

I am NOT a fan of 3rd party characters. It doesn’t feel right to me and while I understand why companies do it ($$$) I just don’t like seeing stuff like guest characters and everyone climaxing over how cool it is that x character is in y game. They usually disrupt the atmosphere and manage to look awkward and out of place. Snake isn’t the worst offender of this (Star Wars in SCIV, F*** this so much) but I don’t have the attachment and raging boner for Snake that most people seem to have. Probably because I’ve NEVER PLAYED a MGS game. Would it be different if I actually played one? I’d be willing to bet that it would. So you can put an asterisk next to this ranking if you want.

#73: Kirby (Melee)
Preferred color: Default [Pink]
Favorite move: Down Throw

I’ve held on to the belief that Kirby is the worst character in Melee for some time now and it’s not even close. Melee Kirby just sucks in almost every possible category. He’s easy to kill, especially vertically. His good horizontal recovery is somewhat negated by his lightness, you can f***ing break out of his f and b throw. Special moves are ass. No killing power.

Usually a character’s best moves are his aerials in Melee but Kirby’s aren’t much to get excited over. Up air is one of like two moves he has that can actually kill regularly (the other being back air) but the hitbox isn’t active for a while so it’s not exactly something you can just throw out. Forward, Down and neutral air may as not exist. They don’t do s***. No knockback, no damage, not really used in combos ohmigosh this character sucks so much.

Smash attacks are pretty slow, I guess tilts are okay. Grabs are whatever. Back throw and his B move are popularly used for killing off the edge but you can’t use it when you’re dying almost every hit and even when you do it’s more of a gimmick than a legitimate strategy.

Hammer is soo bad, stone is garbage too. Nobody any good ever gets hit with that regularly.

Dash attack is the worst move the character has. Like why is this even here. Dash attacks aren’t exactly the best moves but this move is bad even for a dash attack! It’s slow and keeps moving him along after and there’s no knockback at all so if it accidentally comes out you know you’re getting punished for it.

Down Throw is my favorite move because at least he can dance. And his taunt’s always fun.

Ah, I see. Makes sense.

This list is a mix of awesome and awful so far. On one hand, ROB is top ten-worthy (maybe even top five?), and Wario hate is always a bad thing. But on the other hand, Lucario and Melee Kirby are indeed a special kind of terrible.

Walk/Dash looks awkward as hell. But that side B is pretty cool especially since they changed it to a suicide move in the air in Brawl. But everything else is so much worse than in Melee. Brawl Ganondorf sucks.

I think it would be amazing if they made a Smash game where Yoshi isn’t garbage.

It’s amazing how cool Yoshi is in every other Mario game but in Smash he’s one of the most forgettable/uninteresting characters to me. His head also looks fatter here.

Melee G&W is only above Brawl version because I know more about it. I know Brawl version is better but I don’t really care about the character so that doesn’t help it.

If you want to talk about seemingly out of place characters, this guy is way up there. The first time I found out about his inclusion in the game it was a “WTF. Why is this stupid character in this game when they could have put in so many other cooler characters?! Who IS this guY…” etc.

Now, I’m still not terribly fond of the character but this version has some redeeming factors. Bacon is always fun and fishing for 9’s can be stupid fun too. He has an odd assortment of lovable items like turtles and keys to play with but aside from how everything looks, the guy’s not that fun to play compared with the others for me. He has this joke character feel about him and it makes you feel like s*** if you ever lose to him.

You can’t l-cancel some of his aerials, he’s light, doesn’t have the greatest horizontal recovery, and he isn’t the fastest. But he does have chainthrows in every direction, a sick down tilt and usable smash moves so he at least gets a couple points.

#64: Yoshi (Melee)
Preferred color: Pink
Favorite move: Forward air or neutral air

Until you play Yoshi for a while, you don’t realize what a blessing it is to be able to jump out of your shield. Yoshi is the only character who can’t do this because he’s in an egg instead of a shield and several times when I’ve played Yoshi, I’ve found myself trying to jump out of pressure situations only to eat a lot of damage because all I manage to do is roll around.

Lack of recovery move really hurts too, especially because the most effective way to utilize the dino is double jump cancelling, which means if you get hit out of it, you lose your jump and it’s instant death. His double jump has some good points like some invincibility so playing Yoshi isn’t entirely stupid as hell since Fox can’t shinespike you or something like that.

Side B is terrible and I guess you can use it as a recovery move but only at high distances so it’s still limited. Down B….eh. His B move is pretty useless too since nobody really falls for “go to edge and turn them into an egg” unless you’re playing noobs. You can even control it back on to the stage after turning into an egg so it’s really only viable as a surprise. Even then you’re better off doing almost anything else.

I like Forward air because it hits so hard and like all spikes and meteors, if you hit them with it while they’re on the ground, it makes them bounce and you get an easy follow-up.

Huh, I never heard this before so I looked it up and found some interesting stuff about his side B. I thought it was random before but now I know something!

The first hammer in a match cannot be a 1 or 2.
The second hammer in a match cannot be a 2.
Any number the hammer displays cannot be obtained again until after 2 more hammers.
A death (fall or SD) will reset the rules currently applied to #3.
So long as the forward B animation starts, it will count as the next number. In other words: If you input forward B on frame 1 and are hit on frame 2, it'll still count as the number coming out.
Probabilities known of so far:
1/7 chance to see a nine on first throw.
1/7 chance to see it on the second throw if it was not on the first.
1/7 chance to see it on the third throw if it was not on the first or second.
1/7 chance to see it on the fourth throw if it was not on the second or third.
0 chance to see it on any throw if it's been seen in the past two throws.

Clones in Melee are clones in move animation only since the moves themselves have different properties and they can play completely different styles because of said differences. But that doesn’t stop Roy from being obsolete. He’s not the worst character but he might as well not be in the game at all. Fox/Falco and Falcon/Ganon are the best examples of how clones play differently but there really is no point to playing Roy in a competitive environment. Unless you want to play Golden Justice that is, which is the only Roy worth playing. Almost everything he has is a worse version of Marth’s, especially his aerials. And in Melee, your aerials are a big factor in determining your success.

Roy also has a faster fall speed, nearly enough to categorize him with legitimate fast fallers like Fox, Falco and Falcon. Faster fall speed allows for better SHFFLing and combo productivity but because his aerials suck, the faster fall speed only hurts him. He has the worst recovery in the game next to Falco imo because of this.

He’s also the premiere noob attractor. Despite Marth’s obvious superiority, a lot of people still flock to Roy because of Marth’s lack of fire. Every time I met someone who said they “mained Roy” they always played exactly the same: spam special moves. If you play seriously enough to say you have a main, but you “main” Roy, I’ve generally found the person is not that good. At all. Neo, the “best Roy in the world” still played Marth in most tournaments IIRC.

But you have to do with what you have I guess. Roy’s faster SHFFLing makes him fun to mess around with in casuals. Getting hit with down tilt brings you up, and it’s certainly my favorite move of his because you can go into a lot of other usable moves he has like up air, neutral air or f smash for the kill.

Speaking of f smash, if you sweetstpot it (near hilt), it can kill at pretty low percentages but if you miss, it sucks really bad unlike Marth’s who you can still get by without sweetspoting.

#60: Wolf (Brawl)

I realized a while back that a frequently cited reason that some people prefer Brawl over Melee, “It has new characters” does not work for me. Before it came out, I have never been that hyped for anything else in my life before. Waiting every day for the dojo update, trying to figure out potential rosters, and all the cool new characters they could add. The excitement for the game itself dissuaded the roster concerns for a while but after a while I realized…I don’t really care for any of the new characters introduced in Brawl. I mean there are some whose inclusion I don’t mind like Pit. But there really isn’t a character that would make me go “Wow x is in the game, the game is a must buy!”

As for Wolf, he’s the third landmaster in the game. Come on.

Man, this is gettin' crazy! My Melee tertiary and my friend's Brawl secondary, wiped out with no guilt of conscience, one after the other!

Meta Knight is pretty damn OP. One of my friends' mains, and he's always on about how he's so technical though, so it's OK. >_>;

Okay he isn’t as bad in this one compared to the others but he’s still at the bottom of my 64 list. You don’t realize how good having a recovery move is until you realize you lost your jump and are falling to your death.

64 DK is one of the most boring characters. He doesn’t really do anything flashy, even in his Zero To Death combos. And because the entire cast in 64 has ZTD combos, DK’s style takes a pretty big hit.

He also looks the worst too in terms of graphics imo.

I actually like using DK in original smash.

It's fun to have to time and space really well to make up for his lack of speed and large hitbox.
