the bigger question here is how do we set a legal age of consent for sex. I know plenty of girls who had sex at 13-14 who turned out to be healthy adults with successful lives.

yes, rock, but those ages were set at a point in time that, while not the long ago, might as well have been a life time.

For instance, the speed limit is absurd. Every car can do 45 in its sleep and 65-70 on the highway is a joke for a modern vehicle. Those laws were set when cars couldn't handle those speeds as safely as they do now. In 40 years we've advanced greatly in the area.

Same thing with Smoking/Drinking/Sex. I don't want to go on a rant here but putting an age on sex is just ridiculous to me. I don't think 23 year olds should be out taking advantage of 13 year old girls, but we need to accept that in this new feminist world, chicks are having sex younger and younger.

I think the problem, realo, isn't the sex itself but rather the products of sex. You know, STDs, kids, all stuff that a 13-14 year old isn't prepared for.

There's also the fact that we don't know the best time to begin educating children on sex and how to protect themselves, especially since that might be something left better in charge of parents. I mean, a parent might have a better understanding of a child and when they're "mentally" prepared to have sex and the consequences of sex.

The reason we set an arbitrary date is because it's a lot easier than going "they'll know when they're ready" when they really don't.

I mean, going by your standards on "no age of consent" then I'm pretty sure Jerry Sandusky wouldn't have any charges against him.

Debating age of consent laws isnt invariably inappropriate or perverted/predatory like many ppl act it is. Bringing up Sandusky, however, just isnt fair. Everyone thinks that guy should rot.

I see where Realo is coming from, but it's pretty easy to see why the laws are the way they are. Those ages of consent are put in place to protect people. I know that sounds self-explanatory, but there is really no other way to explain it. Although plenty, and I mean plenty of people have sex before they're 16 without it having any serious negative consequences for their future, the laws need to exist to prevent people from using the authority and persuasiveness granted by their age to coerce young people into having sex with them.

I think it's weird for adults to have sex with young teens because I can't understand how they could relate to them on an intellectual level... but most people male or female don't come out damaged from having consensual sex in their early teens.

It's extremely unlikely. It would have almost certainly been in the news somewhere -- especially with the national attention "bronies" have gotten lately.

But yeah, some people will still believe this despite a compete lack of evidence, and it making absolutely no sense in terms of human emotion -- "Oh, hey guys, my sister just got raped by three dudes over and over. So, I thought I'd make a reddit thread because that's how emotionally damaged I am. Oh and those guys they all liked My Little Pony, too. Pretty ****ed up, huh?" As for mental maturity...what makes 16 or 18 a good age? I knew 16 year old girls having sex with guys in college and they were responsible and controlled. I know 24 year old women and men who STILL can't handle sex.

Like anything else, you're as prepared as your parents make you. If your parents act like it doesn't exist then you're going to have to learn on your own which is the bigger problem.
