They do express some concern over other networks, but Nick is the focus of the article.
Frankly, I'm surprised that this hadn't come up earlier. I swear that on average Nickelodeon's programming over the course of the week is 70% Spongebob, 25% live action stuff like iCarly/Victorious and 5% other.

I grew up with Rugrats, Catdog, Wild Thornberries, Hey Arnold, Rocko's Modern Life, etc. Even the shows I wasn't too big on (Rocket Power and a few others) provided a little variety. I just feel so bad for the children who get to grow up in this generation of icky live action and animated reruns with NO variety. Sad...
To me it has nothing to do with the live action shows or whatever being bad. To be honest, they're guilty pleasures of mine.
But Nickelodeon has been bad about their programming forever because Spongebob, FOP, iCarly, etc. have been carrying the network for so long. Spongebob still probably makes a fortune in merchandising. They've had a very "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude about the whole thing for the better part of a decade now, and now that Spongebob isn't producing new episodes with any regularity, if at all, and all of their other shows have already ended, they've hit a brick wall. The advertisement for their new stuff is minimal and are strewn about Spongebob and iCarly reruns. Streaming and services like Netflix are factors, sure, but there's so much more to it than that.

I feel bad that nobody I knew even realized Avatar existed until Mako died. Nick had been that bad for that long that nobody expected an amazing show to pop up on it.
While I have Netflix, I never bother to watch the real nick.
There's no reason, good reruns of spongebob instead of the new toenail ripping out crap, drake and josh instead of icarly, and ren and stimpy instead of fanboy and chumchum/tuff puppy. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
I stopped watching nickelodeon, cartoon network, and disney some time during 5th or 6th grade (about 7 years ago) because my sister said that nobody my age watched cartoons anymore (that and the cartoons got much worse during that time). I don't really watch TV much except for sports now.
--
The Hunger Games>Mockingjay>Catching Fire Majora's Mask won GotD. Deal with it.
Do they even rerun Avatar or Korra during the weekday?
Seems like a no-brainer to me with all the success Korra's had on the weekend, but whenever I happen to look at their lineup when I'm at my sister's house watching my niece I never see it on.
edit: god no drake and josh is objectively bad, icarly is at least tolerable

Nickelodean has been dead for a while. Frankfully I'm surprised they're even showing Korra.
Cartoon Network has DC Nation, Adventure Time, and Regular Show, as well as the late night stuff. Can't be beat.
Disney had the awesome Marvel cartoons, but they've cancelled all those and are replacing them with s***ty Marvel cartoons, so....I guess maybe that Tron cartoon?

I didn't know what Avatar was until I played a game with it as the theme, because I hadn't gone near that network in years.

Actually this sounds about right for me, though probably for just a little longer.

The real issue here is that TV networks still judge things based on the Nielsen ratings. This is even worse than the NPD which doesn't track digital sales.

Just looked at Nick's schedule today. Between noon and 10 PM, there's a whopping SIX shows on. Power Rangers Samurai, an hour of Kung Fu Panda, an hour of Figure It Out, 2 hours each of Victorious and ICarly, and 2.5 hours of Spongebob.
Surely I don't recall Nick being THIS redundant in the 90s.
-- http://zerosignal620.wordpress.com/ Seriously, call Kenny Loggins, cause you're in the Danger Zone.
I don't think Nick even lost the license to air their glory day lineup, it's just that they'd rather charge extra for those shows and air them on a premium channel instead. Dickwads.
Yea, outside of the first week of Korra they haven't replayed it. I have no idea why, they could easily replace a few iCarlys and Spongebobs with a rerun of Korra.
I know on the Toon Nick channel they are always airing Dragonball Z Kai and Aang's Avatar series.
Yeah. This isn't just a nostalgia thing, Nickelodeon in the 90s was a Golden Age of cartoons. Not only were they good but there was a variety of shows. Even shows like Rocket Power were enjoyable. Then we had the Secret World of Alex Mack(everyone's first celebrity crush).
Spongebob is a great show. It really is. It's funny, charming, full of adult humor disguised as childish antics, and its characters are endearing. Fairly Oddparents died out a LONG time ago. Avatar felt like a step in the right direction but they seem ok with having 1-2 premiere shows and not following up.

Cartoon Network is definitely the place to go. Korra is a great show, but that's pretty much it. Stuff like SpongeBob is way past the expire date when it comes to premieres imo. CN has Total Drama, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Young Justice and Regular Show, and some other great ones, even though they're not perfect.

Not just that, but there were tons of non-cartoon shows to choose from, whether it be...
Game shows (Double Dare, Family Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Nick Arcade, Wild and Crazy Kids, What Would You Do, GUTS)
or the rest/sitcoms I suppose (Salute Your Shorts, Pete and Pete, Secret World of Alex Mack, Welcome Freshmen, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Clarissa Explains It All, All That, Fifteen, Roundhouse, Hey Dude, My Brother and Me, among several others)

Maybe it's just me, but I'm a little annoyed by Spongebob. Not to mention the well has been run dry for that show and needs to just be done.
Then we had the Secret World of Alex Mack(everyone's first celebrity crush).
This is something we can all agree on.

You should start watching TeenNick late at night. They have a program block just for you.

I hate when people talk about this. Maybe it seemed like cartoons were better (besides the rose-colored nostalgia glasses we wear) when we were kids because we were the target audience? Rugrats sucked and Spongebob is hilarious.

She's talking about the complete lack of variety in Nickelodeon's line-up, that she brought up 90s cartoons is just an example. Regardless of your opinion on those shows, you can't argue that they didn't offer something different.
These days, Nick's programming consists almost entirely of Spongebob reruns, a Butch Hartman animated series, and two Dan Schneider productions. That's it.

Out of curiosity I looked at cartoons from the 90s, 00s, and come uo with...
90s 1. Animaniacs 2. Tiny Toon Adventures 3. Doug 4. Batman: The Animated Series 5. Rocko's Modern Life 6. Kablam 7. Recess 8. ReBoot 9. Pinky and the Brain 10. Hey Arnold
00s 1. Avatar: The Last Airbender 2. Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends 3. Kim Possible 4. Invader Zim 5. Teen Titans 6. Codename: Kids Next Door 7. The Weekenders 8. Total Drama Island 9. The Fairly Odd Parents 10. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
And then I ask myself which set would I rather watch, and it's pretty hard to choose.
