"This is the new system. You add it to your Wii, or you don't even need to use your Wii.... do you need to use a Wii? You can just use it on your own, but you can also use it with the Wii."
Fallon's so confused

I don't have a good feeling about Nintendo going forward. The Wii succeeded because it became a fad. This won't because it's the same **** and that's not how fads work. Nintendo hasn't made a good console since the N64 (and even that's debatable).
Jimmy Fallon is a moron who doesn't know anything about anything and refuses to understand even when it's explained to him in the simplest of terms. His failure to grasp that it's a new console is not indicative of the general public.
You could say that maybe he confused his viewers by saying these things, but you'd be mistaken. Nobody watches his show.

CNN did the exact same thing a week ago. Should we just discredit them as well?

Don't blame Fallon because Nintendo is messing up. Blame Nintendo.

even a lot of gaming journalists thought it was some kind of accessory or add-on last year when it was first revealed.
Plus, the general public is absolutely stupid

Far be it for me to step up to the plate for Jimmy Fallon, but are you sure he wasn't pulling a Letterman where he deadpan pretends to be dumb and out of touch with technology and pop culture for laughs? And it bombed because his audience didn't know better in this case?
I mean I've never seen Fallon try that, and it would be strange since he tries so hard to seem like he's in touch with that 18-34 demographic he wants to win so much, but I figure it's worth playing devil's advocate.

The general public is absolutely of a similar level of intelligence as Fallon
This but Nintendo is ****ing up to a degree most people either understate or blow way out of proporion

No need, CNN discredits themselves on a regular basis!

1000% positive that is not what happened

I dunno, I'm watching it now. He literally plays dumb when he's like "It's even got a remote... Thing up here. So you can use it on your TV, right?" like, thirty seconds into the segment.

My parents did once ask me "Why did you buy a 3DS if you're not even going to use the 3D? You had a DS, didn't you?"
But they also asked me why I needed a Playstation 2 or "[Game Title] 2" when I already had a Playstation and "[Game Title]" when I was younger, so I think that's just an old person thing.

Because the simplicity of adding numbers actually means something. People understand the PlayStation 2 must mean a PlayStation must have come before it. And the Xbox 360 obviously is based on numbers. The Wii U has no numbers, it barely has anything to set itself as being something different. That and both Microsoft and Sony did a lot of advertising, the systems are consoles that "hardcore" gamers like. The Wii is casual, and your mom isn't going to know the difference between a Wii and a Wii U.

Numbers (including number based puzzles) are naturally easier for a lot of people to process and sort than letters, so it is possible a U could have a slightly worse effect than a 2.
If you give people the same or similar puzzles, there's a good chance the majority will find the one that uses numbers easier than the one that uses letters

Maybe with the Xbox 360 people weren't confused about it being a new system, but rather asked "what happened to xbox 2 through 359"
Jokes aside, I do remember someone seriously asking if there were 64 Nintendo systems that had been released before because of the Nintendo 64's name.
I know some people also thought the 3DS was just 3D tacked onto a normal DS. Essentially, they thought a 3DS was as different from a DS as the DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL were from the original DS.

Ironically, before the official "PlayStation 2" name was unveiled, I remember seeing a number of magazines refer to Sony's forthcoming new console as "PSY", due to the original PlayStation being commonly referred to as the "PSX".

I'd like to think that the typical parent is going to look at something with a "U" added to the title as something different, same as something with a "360" or a "2" added to the title. I mean, just by virtue of the name being different at all should, you know, mean SOMETHING.
Or, they're going to do what most parents do when their kids ask for something:
Go to the store. "I'd like the new Nintendo."

The fact that Nintendo released so many different DSes that WERE largely cosmetic differences may have had something to do with that. There was only ever one Wii, so the Wii U shouldn't have that problem.
-- SuperNiceDog didn't have to reconcile his name... But Dauntless Hunter is now MrGreenonion
Wii may be a terrible name but its also a very simple name the casuals will remember easily, and talking about how bad a name it is just increases it exposure
I can see where Nintendo was going with the Wii, but it would've made more sense to pick a similar simple name instead of tacking on a U a lot of casuals won't even understand.
Besides you can't give every console from now on a horrible name can you?

Nobody had a problem figuring out that the iPhone 4S was the hot new thing they wanted.
Is S better than U?
-- SuperNiceDog didn't have to reconcile his name... But Dauntless Hunter is now MrGreenonion
Maybe not, but 'iPhone' is much bigger news than 'Wii.' Casual players who own a Wii are probably much more in tune with the latest phone versus what could be perceived as a peripheral.
I don't think they have too much to worry about with the name, though. The bigger problem for Nintendo is convincing people they need a WiiU against Kinect or the Wii they have now.
I'm not sure how you can criticize the awareness of Nintendo's products. They didn't sell 150 million DSes and 95 million Wiis by nobody ever hearing of them.
-- SuperNiceDog didn't have to reconcile his name... But Dauntless Hunter is now MrGreenonion
Compared to the iPhone, certainly. No one is confused about a new iPhone because Apple makes sure people know it's new, it's different, and why they need it. The 3DS, and WiiU, by comparison had mixed messages and a lack of focus surrounding them. I don't think the name in either case was or is a big deal--3DS was overpriced with no system selling games; WiiU has numerous problems that come before name confusion--but it's not hard to understand why people get iPhone 4S but may be confused about WiiU. Nintendo made all kinds of peripherals for the Wii, not entirely different from multiple DS models.
