When did this "coming out" thing become such a huge event? If you're that uncomfortable with your parents knowing, then why is it any of their business?
People trying to make this a "coming of age" thing, it's stupid. And then celebrating because he told his parents that he's gay? Seriously, so what? If I told my parents that I'm absolutely terrified of dating women, would it get this much celebration? Doubtful.
I hate this era.
yeah why would we want people to be open and honest and comfortable with who they are
I don't think I called myself "gay" per se, but I definitely mentioned the lack of attractive gay dudes and he was all "be careful with that" and I never corrected him to say "well ACTUALLY I mean being celibate" so yeah

For the record, none of my animosity is directed at you or the fact you're gay. I'm more angry that it's... you know what? I can't really put it into words. Maybe it's the fact that my inability to get a date, and the fact that that's hysterical, but you're gay and everyone is hip-hip-hooray, and that's what society is like. Call it bitterness, but it's really not personal.
Just because he's gay doesn't mean he's automatically getting a date and you still aren't, you know. That's not how it works, I'm pretty sure at least. Maybe someone can back me up on it but gay people have relationship woes just the same as straight people do.
What exactly is wrong with "coming out" being a coming of age thing, Uglyface?
It just bothers me that this is so celebrated, like it's a good thing when it's really just a thing. Saying that you're gay gets nearly everyone to slap you on the back and say you're great, while being me means... well, I'm sure you can work that out from the last couple of pages.
I'm just saying that this isn't a bat mitzvah. It's a guy telling his dad, "Hey, I'm sexually aroused by men." It shouldn't be as big a deal as society makes it out to be.

Actually, once you come out to your parents, you are assigned a boyfriend (girlfriend for the ladies), and from then on, any and all relationship problems cease to exist.
At least, that's what I read in my friend's "Gay Rulebook". The foreward was written by Liberace.
people are happy when people come out of the closet because homosexuals are persecuted and feel the need to hide this uncontrollable facet of themselves when they shouldn't have to.

Ideally, yes, but as long as we continue to live in a society where gay people are treated as lesser people, it's a big deal.

This topic and the rest of the world are two pretty different places.

Because we are decent people who don't judge based off of sexual orientation. The whole world is not like this topic.
We celebrate lots of life events that are just "things". Birthdays are just a thing. It's not that big of an achievement living another year (at least anymore)
Anniversaries are also superfluous
Who cares about graduations either

b8 is like the gayest board on the internet
b8 is so gay that our gay dudes have started having sex with women

It bothers you? It's not exactly celebrated. The fact is, most people in our society are at least a little homophobic. Some parents are extremely intolerant of their children being gay and will seriously cut off all contact, and kick them out if still living with them. Some will say they are disappointed, not do anything to exclude them but that still hurts. Some will be fine and accept their children as they are.
Even if you are pretty sure your parents will be cool with it, it's still scary coming to them with news that may change their view of you.
So naturally, people tend to be supportive of someone coming out to their parents, because it is kind of a big deal. Being upset about people being supportive of another person doing something that's honestly kind of scary is... .at best very bitter.

The batman villians all seem to be one big joke that batman refuses to laugh at - SantaRPG
actually this one i AM personally bugged by. mainly because a lot of 'em are like 'congrats on doing a minor achievement that suggests you're more capable than a sack of potatoes.'
i mean i understand when the graduation is actually something containing real merit, such as a high enough level (e.g., master's) but stuff like junior high/middle school getting one or hell, high school, irk me.
it also sucks for the people who are 'obligated' to go. sit there for hours for at most a ceremony that contains at best half a dozen pics that don't come out like crap or repeats of another.
i mean that's neither here nor there but between coming out and uglyface's posts, 'things that suck' seems to be the theme of the topic!

"Dad, I don't like girls." "No s***. Your mother and I have known you're celibate for years!" "Uh..." "What? Oh right; you probably want a hug about now, huh? C'mere, son."

So far for high school and college graduations I didn't have to go. Not sure about middle school "graduation", but that really wasnt anything special, just the final day of school having an assembly. It was more of a celebration of the "middle school era" of your life ending, rather than celebrating "omg you are smart enough for high school, go you!".
I dont plan on going to my master's graduation ceremony.
But to be honest, a lot of celebrations that we may find frivolous achievements are usually not as much about the achievement itself, but the celebration of an era ending and a new one beginning.
