I used the fire one on pre-patch inferno Belial, so he definitely has his uses.

So, what's the preferred primary attack for a monk?

Fist of Thunder - Thuderclap is the most used, as it has consistently high damage(37% extra aoe on every hit) has a built in dash, and Fist of Thunder is the fastest of all the punches. Bounding Light is the only other decent option but it lacks a knockback and it's chain is on 3rd hit.

Deadly Reach, Keen Eye is a good alternative as it provides an impressive Armor boost. Foresight also has it's place in heavy DPS builds using combination strike. Everything else is either nice to have but unnecessary(trident) or crap (everything else, which sucks cause I swear one of them does the Sign of the big dipper)

Crippling Wave, Concussion is used for obvious reasons. Yes it stacks with resolve, but not accumulative(one calculates then the other calulates from there). I used Breaking wave for Ponies because Red and FD do way more damage than I can ever hope to do. Everything else sucks because Crippling Wave sucks.

Hundred Fists is outclassed by Thunderclap in almost every way but does do more damage per hit. The small strikes DO NOT proc life on hit.

i saw a fun kite build on stream last night where this monk used Earth Ally and Deadly Reach to Kite everything and stack extreme damage.

He would summon Earth Ally to shoot out a wave then stand behind it and Deadly Reach everything without a high crit chance/damage then repeat it over and over.

It took alot of skill and alot of kiting but he massacred elite packs

Starting to upgrade my Wizard's defenses a bit and trying out Prismatic Armor over Force. Fun when you can actually survive things. Still tough picking what to upgrade, but I've been keeping an eye towards Armor and especially Resists. Not sure how valuable Vit is, especially when not using Force Armor (currently at 25000 Life).

Early in my inferno career I tried to pick up Intel and All Resist.

Combined with Prismatic Armor to have crazy high all resists.

I have since then decided that I would rather have crit chance and crit damage and even more Intel at the cost of the defensive stats. I would rather just play more skillfully and avoid damage than to sacrifice DPS at this point.

When I'm playing with a friend then I'm not usually going to take anyways and when I'm playing by myself the enemies have enough less HP that the extra DPS is what tips the scales to allow me to melt things quick enough to overcome being alone.

Hmm, interesting. I am fairly focused on DPS, and try to avoid sacrificing Int when I upgrade, but haven't really been going for Crit. I do use Force Weapon and Sparkflint to increase damage though. Crit doesn't increase Hydra damage, does it?

Hydras can crit, yes.

And I've switched back to sparkflint since the patch. Because you get the percentage buff just for activating it, and then you get the damage it deals if they shots actually hit.


And when i'm running act 1 I use energy armor that gives me +5% crit chance. I don't think I can afford to do that on any other acts yet, at least not solo. But with the crit armor turned on I'm at like 33% crit (maybe higher?) And thanks to the green star in my weapon my crits deal 120% damage. So every extra % of crit is an extra 1.2% damage. (based on the non crit damage total)


You don't want to be ALL crit just like you dont want to be ALL attack speed, but it definitely pays dividends to figure out the DPS formula and figure out which factors you can increase to do the most good.


Like when I'm getting ready to buy an upgrade I'll take a few minutes to figure some things out.

For starts I'll REMOVE the piece I'm trying to upgrade and then figure out a few things without factoring in the item's stats.
1) How much damage will I get per 5 INT
2) How much damage will I get per 1% crit (if its a piece that can even roll crit)
3) How much damage do I get for 10% crit damage
4) How much damage will I get per 1% IAS

And especially if you have very low values in some of those areas you would be surprised to learn how much you actually get from them. Like if you have 0 added IAS in your build then you know that every 1% IAS is going to increase your damage by 1%. And so back when rings would commonly roll 15% attack speed it was incredibly useful to just run 60 int and 15% attack speed because how what a massive boost that was to your DPS. But suppose you have 18% from your 2 rings and 0% on your neck. Getting a 8% attack speed neck will not increase your DPS by 8% of what it currently is, it will give you 8% on top of the total that isn't already affected by attack speed. Which is why you have to calc the effect of all the values independent of each other.

I take back what I said about bosses being easier than elites. Hell Butcher took about five tries - kept getting OHKO'd by his charge. Being 2-hit ko'd by literally all his other attacks (including the burning floor) didn't help either. Things are definitely not looking up!

Yeah, kinda annoyed by the increased drop rates. Not sure why Blizzard felt the necessity to do that.

Well, I can understand why (it makes Inferno a lot more beatable without relying on the AH), but it also makes the AH less useful and drives prices down, which you'd think would be bad for Blizzard.

I didn't really get anything amazing during my runs today, but I was very happy to learn that red/chris and I are capable of running inferno ponies again which we were not able to effectively do after they removed the pony traps.

It's nice that they made act 1 so much friendly in terms of drops, but actually being able to get 5 stacks and kill pony groups will still result in the most potential for awesome gear ^_^

man act 2 is easy now but it's sooo much less rewarding compared to act 1. the enemies have a lot more health and what's more a lot of them run away from you or become untargetable. took forever to do a 'run' and found nothing of value.

Act 1 may be faster but with ponies you don't have to deal with getting a metric ton of non 60 items in addition to the 61-63 gear.

As long as you can actually clear the elites then you are basically looking at 4-6 extra elite groups to get an automatic rare or three from. We're still going to clear Warden and Butcher mind you, but it's just going to be a quick rush to 5 stacks and boss clear instead of ferreting elite groups out of every nook and cranny.
