I really don't like people who have never drank, unless they're allergic to alcohol or have some condition that makes drinking very problematic.

Now it's not because drinking is good or fun or something that everybody needs to do... it's pretty dumb and it's not something that I particularly enjoy doing myself. But not even trying something that plenty of people enjoy because you've seen or heard it have some negative effects on others just seems weak to me. It's like they don't have enough faith in themselves to think that they would be able to handle it and just have a good time without going overboard and doing something stupid.

But I guess that feeling doesn't really have anything to do with drinking and it's more about people who don't like trying new things.

Well plenty of people enjoy crack, prostitution and My Little Pony and I'm not going to try those. I have consumed alcohol before, and gotten "tipsy" but I've just never drank in excess to the point of being "drunk".

Uh, partied harder, I guess. Honestly, my first time was actually one of the worst given that I have no memories of what happened for an hour of two. Nothing major happened, or at least nothing somebody told me afterwards. Thankfully that (lack of) experience made me more careful, never gotten that bad again.

To clarify: I form habits really easily. In first grade I saw other people biting their nails and wondered why so I tried it. I've never stopped biting my nails since. My way to not become an alcoholic is to never have the first drink.

Well, first of all I'm not even 21 so there's the whole thing about how it's illegal. Also, I'm not boring enough to require alcohol to have fun. Also, I don't see why I should have to try something that will likely end up with me throwing up and wake up with a headache.

I don't care if people get drunk though, as long as they don't drive or break anything (my friend had a party and someone broke some of his game discs, his washing machine, his chair, puked all over all his stuff, etc.)

So what you're saying is that you take offense to people that are not willing to try things that are hazardous to their own well-being? Or rather, that a wide body of knowledge informed them of, rather than them finding out first-hand?

I'm pretty sure that it's not healthy to slit one's wrists either, and I don't really care how much pleasure it brings to people who think they need to inflict pain on themselves to "feel," I'm not about to try that either.

Seriously, I have quite a bit of alcoholism in my family tree, and an addictive personality myself. You want to know the secret to not becoming an alcoholic?

-Don't drink when you're depressed.
-Don't drink alone.
-Don't drink very often. (duh)
-Very sparingly actually get drunk.

You can tone the second rule down a bit once you've learned your tolerances to 1 low-grav beer (ie-most things at the supermarket) in a day, maybe 2 if you really space it out. Don't do it every day, though. Hell, don't do that at all until after college (because we're all idiots in college).

Also don't drink and drive, but that really has nothing to do succumbing to alcoholism so much as not being stupid.

I got really giggly and laughed at the dumbest s*** while my even more drunk friends got talkative and said things they would eventually regret. It was awesome.

I don't usually drink to get drunk though. I stop at "tipsy" because it's just as fun and I don't end up making half as much a fool of myself as my possey did that day.

I'm the same way. Started biting my nails in 3rd grade, still do. Anything I've tried over the years that's been fun has been almost impossible for me to stop. My sister was an alcoholic from high school up until her 30's and she's still addicted to cigarettes. I spent my entire life thinking I'd fall into the same habits, so I never started either of them.

Finally, when I was 21 and tailgating at a Chiefs game in December, I was ****ing freezing, and someone told me to drink some Hot Damn they had. They let me know that it had a really high alcohol content, but to at least try it because it really warms you up as it goes down. I then had my first sip ever. It was pretty neat. Over the course of the day, I had a few more sips. Even at that high of content, I still never felt any different, and a lot of my fears were alleviated.

I started trying a whole bunch of different kinds over the next few years, and learned how to take all these different kinds of shots. I've only been truly drunk maybe 8 times in almost 3 years, but it's a relatively pleasant experience almost every time (if you're not with someone who gets the cops called on you, that is). As long as you take kevwaffles' advice the first few times you drink, you'll come to realize how harmless it really is. It's something to at least try to see what it's all about.
