Starting point depends if you have a psp or not. Upcoming steam sale has oath of felghana, that's a good spot if you don't. If you do, oath on psp is better. Then you can get 7, best game in the series. Hell, you can play the best remake of the first 2 games on psp.

Then yeah, oath is the best starting point for pc. You can still get ys eternal for the first two games on pc if you're interested, but it's a different gameplay. 6 is also a good spot, had a ps2 release, but I'd say oath first. 6,Ark of napishkim, is also on pc, though not localized yet.

Origin is a prequel and is the only other steam game. That can go after oath and the first two games.

start with Ys Book 1+2 on the Virtual Console. That got me hooked and I played every game in the series since then

We don't know price yet. And psp is a couple years more recent with more modes and extras.

Ys rules, and the music is the jams.

Assuming you don't earn a TurboGrafx-16 and CD attachment like 99.9% of the rest of the world, Ys Book I +II on the VC is without question the best way to go.
