Went due west from the starting Plateau and looked for a tower. It took us several hours, stopping to fight enemies and find stuff. It's a far cry (*cough*) from the Ubisoft thing where they're just everywhere and mundane.

Yeah, it's massive. I teleport a lot, but on the occasion I decide to just go on foot it can be quite staggering.

You know what the worst part of the Towers are? Can't dive into bales of hay.

Diving into bales of hay and waiting 2 minutes isn't fun.

The thing that I appreciate, is that AC didn't award you much for exploring. You got feathers or flags or something, but they never felt like they did anything unless you wanted to be a completionist and get them all(And even then, that didn't feel rewarding). BotW is two fold on the rewards, you are constantly in need for your own survival(You can run from everything, which is its own style of play and not always easy, so its still engaging to play this way) and most of the things you find give you some form of character progression(Hearts, inventory space, stamina). They are tangible rewards for actually participating in gameplay. This is something many open world games don't provide(Or, they think their often half-hearted side storylines are fulfilling, when often they aren't).

Why would you wait 2 minutes after diving into a bale of hay from the top of a building?

I assume you are waiting out the guards because your notoriety is too high to pop out.

No, you go up to sync and then you make a leap of faith and dive into a bale of hay.

I'm sure someone will find a way to do this in botw that we haven't found yet.

If they do then it is officially better than Assassin's Creed II.

Yeah. One thing that I thought about is that Zelda games don't reward you that much for exploring the world. The best thing you get usually are pieces of heart and worthless rupees. In BotW however everythingyou find has value, and I really appreciate that.

Hearts also had a decreasing value as games went by because it felt like every game enemies punished you less and less. Previously, there was no reason for a quarter of a heart to be a thing, but some enemies hit you for a quarter of your health. There was no threat. Now every heart counts because you never know when you are going to run into something that is going to hit you like a bus.

It is a magical experience. I don't have time to play it but I can't stop thinking about it while at work. I've seen only been to two (human) towns so that's only a small portion of the world. I love going off the beaten path and finding an interesting little area.

This is something many open world games don't provide

Every single open world game provides this. It's pretty much the whole point. Far Cry 3 pretty much boiled it down to its most absurd core - collecting flowers. But literally every game has it - AC's chests for example. Except for maybe GTA, which has balls of steel.

BOTW is really weak on this front though. The main thing you want to find is shrines, which you find just by climbing up high, and then you just make a beeline for the shrine. You only really find Koroks by exploring, which really sucks since they have the worst hiding spots and the rewards are really sad. Exploring for secret shrines with the shrine radar is by far the best thing.
