Unless you're doing take-out, not tipping is just wrong, even though it's wrong for restaurants to place the burden on customers to provide for the waiters.

I actually wanted to ask about this. I've been ordering take-out more often lately and am not sure how the "tipping culture" applies to those situations. I assume that when I call in a to-go order, the servers/establishment aren't really doing more work than fast food employees. That said, the servers are probably still making less than minimum wage and probably rely on tips from everyone, not just those dining in - so I tip (usually a lesser amount). Anybody wanna weigh in on this?

Why would you tip for take out? Everything that you're normally tipping for, you're doing yourself.

My thought process is that if anyone at the restaurant is making under minimum wage, they may rely on tips from everyone. Even though my take-out order doesn't require the time and effort of a dine-in order, it still requires time and effort, and it may throw off a place's routine since I'm assuming take-out orders aren't as common.

But I actually just looked it up and learned that tipped employees in my state are mandated to make at least minimum wage... so I might start being a skinflint on these takeouts.

I tip for take out if and only if I genuinely like the owners of the establishment and I'd be willing to still buy the food if it were at the higher price that I am effectively paying.

I tip without fail, even in countries where it's not expected, and at minimum 15% unless the service was terrible.

I tip $1 for takeout.

Tipping is a socially acceptable practice, so unless the service is horrendous, yes I tip if I'm getting service. If I'm just getting takeout the most I'll do is round my bill up to the nearest dollar amount, but even then I don't really consider it a tip so much as I don't like paying uneven numbers for things if I can help it.

Tipping is good*, but I don't tip for take-out unless I ask for something extra they didn't have to do (extra peppers with my pizza or whatever).

*in a world where tipping is necessary -- it's a shame we let businesses get away with this system

From what I understand, most servers like the system and prefer it over the alternative of a living wage and no tips.

No, never
They need to get their money off their employeer, not from the customers - just like in every damn job
When you go to a store and buy something, do you tip the cashier? no, you don't
When you recieve a tech support via the telephone, do you tip the tech supporter? no, you don't

So what makes waiters so special? because they receive a poor salary (if at all?) so what? tech support salary sucks ass too
Because their job is hard? again, so what? maybe go out and tip your newspaper delivery boy or dumpster truck workers that wake up every morning at 4AM
So, why? because they give you good service and smile at you? well guess what, tech support MUST give you good service and always be polite and they are not getting tips

So, again, what makes waiters so special?
Nothing, it's just a custom that started long long ago and now it's too late to change
It's unlogical and anyone that decides to stop and think for one minute if tipping makes sense will jump to same conclusion
Sadly, people prefer to be sheeps and refuse to admit being wrong about this

So what can I say? enjoy wasting your money, I know I don't

Not enforced, but socially the "correct way" is to always tip 10% unless you get s***ty service
Can put more than 10% for amazing service if you really want of course

I usually tip around 5-10% when I order delivery or out eating at a restaurant. If it's collection or take away, no point to it. Also my tip can decrease/increase based on how poor/good the service is.

I barbacked awhile and understand why people like it -- I miss covering all my bills by just working weekends sometimes -- but companies can still screw you over along the way.

The main example I can think of is when we had a big party reservation one night. You have to pay in advance to reserve the bar, and when you reserve you can tip in advance too. Well this party did and must have told their friends because it was a low-income kind of night for tips. We knew about the advance tip though and didn't worry much about it...until it was revealed that was a tip for reservations and not service, so we worked harder than normal for very little in comparison to our norms.

Some people do well with the service industry, so good on them...but they can get the short end of the stick too and don't have much protection for those times.

I generally tip 20% and I'll lower it to 15% if the overall experience was bad. Most of my issues tend to originate in the kitchen, and I don't like to blame the server for that. I don't even get mad if they tell me they're sorry and they forgot to put my order in because it's busy. I don't go out to eat when I'm on a schedule, though.

I used to work BOH at a classy restaurant in CA. I can't fully understand the server life, but I definitely saw a lot of it haha.
